What was that line in Top Gun, " crashed and burned the first time around but it's looking pretty good so far", or something like that anyway. Crash is what happens when you're in a high speed descent, looking at your chart, and the wind shifts on you. Overspeed and off come the wings.

    Attachment 43861Attachment 43860

So what do we do? Bail out, jump on the first bus back to La Toma, pick up another plane and load of cargo, try it again. Sent a cable to Nellie to contact Douglas and have them review their QC, wings on a C-47 should be good to the redline of 190 knts, not give up at 185.

Made it into Jaen fine the second time around.

Don't know who carved this field into the side of the mountain but there are definitely no go-arounds here. Landed, barely, at Cajabamba.

After taking the weekend off to visit my daughter and her family it's time to run the gauntlet again.

Got a little lost on the way, turned up the wrong canyon and had to bust altitude to stay out of trouble. Finally made it into Huanuco once I figured out where I was.

Much better flight but hard to believe people can function everyday at this altitude, made it into Vicco.

Now from over 13000 ft to almost sea level, what was Nellie thinking?

    Departing for Las Palmas.

    Cargo: 6000

What a sleigh ride, too bad the coast was all clouded in once I got over the mountains. Unfortunately, I think our time at lower altitudes is short lived and soon we'll be sucking at the O2 again.

    Arrived Las Palmas.

(edit: please cancel the maintenance point in my flight to Huanuco, forgot the altitude cap was raised to 17500 once we hit Peru)

After a little break it's time to take to the sky again, departing Las Palmas for Ayacucho.

    Fuel: 1600
    Cargo: 6000

Made it in after seriously testin the side slipping abilities of the Dak ( yes, you too can descend at 1500 fpm and yet maintain only 90 knts IAS ). Happy to be on the ground at Ayacucho after crossing what I'm now going to call "the wall", climb from sea level to 17000 ft then turn right and start counting canyons till you find the right one to begin your descent. Tell Miss Nelly some of this route planning might need a little going over.

Off to test the abilities of my trusty Dak once again, departing for Cuzco.

Ah, the fun never ends. Hit an air pocket climbing out of Ayacucho, caught my copilot off guard and he showed the mixtures into full rich. Not such a good thing at 10500 ft, engines immediately lost power, stalled and didn't have enough altitude to recover. Luckily the field was mostly soft and after replacing the props the locals used a tractor to tow us out to the nearest road where we were able to takeoff again.

Racked up 4 more maintenance points.

I sure do enjoy getting up, helping the wife with her lunch and on her way to work, then after grabbing my coffee, reading these posts. You guys make a nice adventure out of it.

Arrived Puno after an uneventful flight but beautiful scenery to keep us ohhh'ing and ahhhh'ing. Followed the valley south out of Cuzco till we hit the Altiplano. Lake Titicaca is bigger than I thought it was going to be, fantastic views as we made our approach.

Except for some turbulence this flight was a real sleigh ride, no valleys to climb out of or big granite to dodge. Does that mean something really bad is coming up? Guess we'll find out as this adventure continues.

Old cargo out, new cargo in, some quick grub, and a once over of the old girl to make sure she's doing ok brings us to departure time again. Outbound La Paz for Cochabamba.
