    FSX Sikorsky S-38 Amphibian???

    Does anyone know where I can find one??

    George Diemer did some excellent ones for FS9. Checks of three different download sites rendered only those by George. . .none for FSX save a poorly done one that had no VC and barely 1meg in download size. If you don't mind FS9 aircraft inhabiting your FSX installation, you might try his, they were actually very nicely done models. Otherwise I'm afraid you're out of luck.

    Can you provide links? The only one I can find is that one without a VC

    If that doesn't get you to it, then just do a search of his name. He did quite a few variations of that era Flying Boat.

    None of the S-38s I can find are working. Every time I get an error message saying the aircraft failed to initialize :/

    Odd, I just unzipped, placed it in the airplane folder, loaded the sim and it was fine. You do have to adjust one thing in the panel.cfg file though, scroll to the very bottom and change the last number to "6353". Otherwise when you load the aircraft half of the screen is black. . .not uncommon with some FS9 to FSX moves.

    X=0
    Y=0

    SIZE_Y=6353

    I have George Diemer's "NC144M" installed. Also I installed it in P3D_V2.4 and it works fine, so no reason it shouldn't work in FSX that I can see.

    So weird. That's the one I just downloaded. Can't get it to work. I'll try that panel fix though. I suppose there's an off chance that might solve my problem

    Not much that can go wrong. . .are all the folders present?

  9. #9
    Yeah all the files are there. But every time I get an error message saying the aircraft failed to initialize

    Only other thing beyond all that's been mentioned would be a sound file or a gauge missing but if you've been simming for any length of time at all, you've most likely got everything extra you might need. (GaugeSound.dll?)

  11. #11
    Yeah I've got everything it should need..... so odd....

  12. #12
    I assume you're flying FSX. Can you post a shot of your aircraft.cfg file (just the top area that shows the aircraft info).

    My computer is being weird with screen shots right now, so I'm copying and pasting this.

    Not to but in, but Ed, is there a 'fix' for the FS9 prop transparency effect in FSX.

    Ryan, my S-38 loaded and flies fine in FSX. However I'm using the Northwest textures.
    Notice that the sim file appears to be texture specific to the A/C reg number.
    Other than the texture the aircraft section of my cfg. matches yours.

    Maybe try downloading another S-38 and see if it 'flies'.

    FSX Correcting Prop Issues with FSX & Service Pack 2 - An Illustrated Tutorial. Improper display of aircraft propellers when using FS2004 aircraft in FSX with Service Pack 2 is a well known issue. The "fix" has been documented in several forum posts but it was thought an illustrated tutorial outlining the correction steps would be useful. Compiled in .doc and .pdf formats for your flying enjoyment by David "Opa" Marshall.

    Thanks for posting this Terry, yesterday was a busy day with little time to answer these latest posts. As far as the S-38 problem. Without a clear knowledge of your system Ryan, I am at a loss as to why it doesn't work on your particular system as it appears to work for others. It's most like an easy fix but the only times I have seen this error (cannot initialize) is if the panel folder is missing or if the model file is of a type that the sim no longer recognizes. That would seem not to be the problem since others who have tried that particular airplane are having no problems.

    Some things that just came to mind that you might look at:
    Is this airplane installed in the "Airplanes" folder or an alternate location?
    Is the panel.cfg file intact. . .did you make any changes to that file?
    Is the model file untouched (no renaming of that file is allowed, it must read as is from the installation)
    Have you renamed anything (folders, texture name, airfile, etc) after the initial installation and prior to loading it into the sim?
    The sound is aliased to the Douglas DC-3. . .do you have that airplane installed? Have you changed the sound file for any reason?

    If all those have been checked and verified that you touched nothing and simply unzipped and put it into the Airplanes folder then it falls to your system in some way. It's a simple airplane by FSX standards and no normal reason for it not to work, as verified by several others who have no problems.

    Thanks Terry & Ed. Off to the "Prop Shop".

    I'm gonna check off all those things later. If that doesn't work, I'll try downloading it again and start fresh.
    In the meantime, I'm gonna put that prop texture fix to work on an old FS2004 Yak-9 that's just sitting around in my hangar

  21. #21
    So I'm attempting the prop fix on that Yak-9... only it seems there are 2 prop .bmps... one called "propblades" and the other called "propdisk3".... Which one should I apply the fix to?

    Apply to propdisk3, the other is most likely just a texture for the individual blades. Make a backup of it to be sure. . .just in case.

    I can't get the link in that download to work. The download worked and opened, but in the instructions that contained a link to DXTBMP program, that link didn't work :/

    I had it working in Dx10 briefly but the modelled prop disks obliterated autogen and cloud textures so, much as I loved the aircraft in Fs9, it was not for FsX or FsX Dx10.

    My experience also. Much as I like some of the FS9 prop aircraft, the prop texture problem really detracts from using them in FSX.
