How does one make\edit a bump map?

I've been tweaking the repaints of Paul Clawson's FH-1 phantom which I uploaded to the Library a few days ago and just want to add bump maps? does anybody know how to edit/ make them cos im lost! the original had some so I know this model supports it?

    Cheers

This is the best tutorial I have found that was easy enough for me to understand and be successful in creating my own maps. I've since moved to using crazy bump and Photoshop but only because a while back The application mention in the article "The Gimp" stopped working and I could never get it back.
