    Iwo Jima Stang

What happened to the new Iwo Jima Stang that Jankees posted a while back. She would sure look good in this Iwo Jima scenery. Thanks Jankees for all the paints I have added to my new collection of Warbirdsim P-51D Mustangs.

    Hi Tom,

Jan Kees uploads his repaints to OzX, so all of his repaints can be found there. Here's his recent "Fighting Lady" repaint: http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/...fighting-lady/

And a few other Iwo Jima schemes by Jan Kees:

What Iwo Jima scenery ? Love the Stang paint . My Dad use to tell me about the P-51's ground looping into the big banks of sand and also the B-29's crashing trying to land .

    Iwo Scenery

Rich, it is scenery I made myself using Airport Design Editor. I put in the buildings, people, equipment and thanks to Iris and other FS9 freeware aircraft static models made with AI Model Creator. I found an old B-29 on Simviation and put one being repaired with three others ready to return to duty. I also made an entire line of P-51D in another area as part of the fighters escorting the B-29's on their way to Japan and back. It is complete with Higgins Boats in the landing areas. Another fun feature are some crashed A6M Zero's and Kate's around the airfield.

The biggest challenge was Mt. Suribachi which I made from the Rock of Gibaralter. I wish I could bottle the whole thing up but many of my items in the scenery are from downloaded copywrited material. Michael Carr gave me permission to use his materials but publishing them would not be right. Anyway it is easy to do with OBJECT PLACER from the SDK.

This is especially fun with my new Warbirdsim P-51D Mustangs. Now to create some flights in an out of the airbase.

    sorry Tom,
the one you mention exists only on my harddisk back home, so far anyway. It is almost done, though it still needs a few adjustments, but I'm currently away from home, so patience is needed I fear.
Meanwhile, here is Meatball, yet another Iwo Mustang.
btw, I didnt know they had hangars on Iwo, I thought it was all out in the open?

Thanks Jan, I can wait for sure. Appreciate Meatball. Yes I am sure you are correct about no hangers on Iwo Jima especially just after the take over. These must be temporary structures and the time is probably July 1945. Just fun stuff. I have about 6 of your beauties flying in and out of Iwo from Tinian. Almost a three hour flight. I set up a little tent city for the guys to rest up in before escorting the bombers.

What a great hobby this is. Thanks again.

Mt Suribachi with Rock of Gibaralter

    Hi Tom ,

Just wondered if the Rock of Gibaralter was a a separate bgl you have in your scenery folder and if so would it violate anyone's copyright etc ? I have mulled around with Instant Scenery and am fairly good with it for simple to moderate adding of hangers , airport articles , vehicles etc . I also have had AFX for parking spots and other changes so I think if I could get a decent Mt Suribachi I could add everything else without too much trouble . ( I'm a beginner for sure but I'm getting a little better each time from reading all the threads from the master scenery builders here at SOH)

Rich, I do believe that Mt. Suribachi is a single bgl. I will check it out and because it is a default object in FSX, can't imagine it would not be ok. I believe the bgl will put it in the right position. More to come.

Rich, I did some triming of the original Rock of Gibralter and came up with this. Put the bgl file in your Iwo Jima scenery folder and activate within FSX. Send me a private message with your email address. I will send the bgl and xml files.

Let me know if it works for you.

back at my computer, I found a few pics of iwo, taken by Pilots of the 506th FG that give a nice impression of what life was like on the island, and that may be of interest to you too:

    Officersclub of the 457th FS:

but the rest was all tents:

and an overall pic, to illustrate how crowded the little island was, with three airfields on it:

Thanks for sharing jankees , I don't think I've ever ran across these before . My Dad told me he slept in the deepest hole he could find . This sure looks like tent city doesn't it ? I don't think that canvas would offer too much protection with a Japanese mortar round or rifle bullet .

here's the update on L'il Butch, I had mixed up the hatches below the aircraft, and thus the stripe was on a completly wrong hatch, check with oriinal post:

This looks better, don't you agree?

And while we were talking about Iwo, I thought I might as well add another (still WiP mind you):

and now I'll need to look for a place to land these paints...

Jan, I to have not seen these pictures. I have removed all my hangers and all autogen trees. I got many of the tents correct as to style but because the island was so torn up by bombardment and bombing it is difficult to detail that kind of terrain. Roger Wilco contacted me and maybe with his help we can get something started here that will look much better. I am definitely an amature when it comes to scenery. Crucsader said my Mt Suribachi worked well for him. Roger Wilco 66 in a PM said he has a mesh made for Suribachi and I encouraged him to get that into production.

Little Butch looks great, I painted her several times in the past for several models but yours is by far the best of all for the Warbirdsim Stang. I am sure the damaged zeros and other objects in my scenery come from Roger Wilco 66. After installing the Solomon Islands and seeing the quality, having Mark involved could really make Iwo Jima scenery great. As soon as Butch and Betty Ann are done they will be added to my hanger.

Thanks for everything Jan, Crusader and Mark.

It sounds like you're really going to make a Iwo scenery for FSX? Great, in that case, I do have a few more pics for you:

    some overviews:

Wow Jan, the pictures are great, this will give me something to work with. Much appreciated. Many of my objects are from the Solomon Islands by Roger Wilco 66. With his help maybe we can put something together.

    Thanks Jankees

I wish my Dad were here to see these(passed away in Jan 2007). He would be totally shocked . He was with the 3rd Marine Division on Iwo . I am blessed that he lived to a ripe old age of 86 . Unlike his fellow Marines and Navy Corpmen who made the ultimate sacrifice at a very young age . Thank you very much for sharing these pics .

Jan; Where did you get these pictures? My Dad was on Iwo with the 90th Seabees from Mar. 45 till the end of the war. Got any pictures of their area on Iwo? He would love to see them while he is still here.

  22. #22
I'm not sure where 'their' area was on Iwo, but I do have pics of seabee's, mainly off the internet, and some out of books.
Here's a few sites that might interest you:

Jim , my dad (3rd Mar Div) told me how extremely important everyone's job was on Iwo . He originally started out as a "ground pounder" but ended up repairing artillery as he worked in a machine shop prior to the war . I do remember him talking about the Seabees and how they worked day and night preparing the airfields to accept the B29's and to having to try and extend the length . He said they on occasion had a Japanese sniper pop out of a cave and especially dangerous were any left over mines .

Really looking forward to this project of resurrecting Iwo Jima . It will be a great tribute !

The only thing my Dad ever said about Iwo was How he & his buddy were "caught" between the Marines & the Air Corps in the last banzi charge on Iwo & about buiding the road up Mt. Sarabarchi (forgive the spelling). I' check out those websites & download Jankees pictures. Thanks all. Keep the fab repaints coming.

Wow, the pictures are fantastic. Things are begining to happen here. I just got a PM from Mark (Roger Wilco 66) and he will be producing all the things we need for a first class scenery for Iwo Jima. It just takes time so we have to be patient. I started dreaming of this a couple of years ago and now finally things look like they could be coming together. Keep your fingers crossed. We will let you know when to begin your start up procedures for your Mustangs.
