    Thanks,

    Hi,

Normally (it's my case) the standard Microsoft Media Player (common part of the Microsoft OS's ) is able to play DVD movies (standard DVD format .. burned by yourself or commercial releases)

If you want to use absolutely a third party DVD movies reader .. PowerDVD (payware) is a decent one.

I'll move this down to the Software tech forum.

Personally, I use Windows Media Player and/or WinAmp to play DVD movies with no problems on my XP, Vista, & 7 machines. Haven't run across any factory-made discs that I can't play.
On a couple older machines I had gotten a copy of InterVideo's WinDVD (now owned by Corel) when I purhcased the DVD drive.
It's available for purchase here... http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satelli...onTabview=tab0
I haven't used it since Corel took the product over, but the old version was a nice package. It's not real cheap so keep reading...

What OS are you running? It sounds like that you are just missing the MPEG2 video codec to play a DVD disc.

Here's a couple links with more info:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/dvddecoder.shtml
    http://download.cnet.com/Media-Playe...-10749065.html
This last link is the DVD codec pack that we run at work...our company IT dept strips down all their machines, but to get access to our training DVDs and other stuff we needed to add the codecs back in so we could view discs using Windows Media Player.

Thanks Claudius and Mike...when I attempt to play a DVD using WM I get the error ...

"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

I have Power DVD 7.0 OEM that came with my video card but I cannot use because of CTD when I load a dvd. Cyberlink is no help...one update available but still CTD after loading.

So, I'd like to be able to play DVD's on my nice new PC with HD LCD monitor. Nothing but strike outs so far.

    Thanks for the responses, Guys,

Okay, It sounds like that PowerDVD install is pooched up and that's where your machine is looking for it's DVD codecs. Can you do a full uninstall and reinstall of PowerDVD? (Do you have the program on CD or is it pre-packed with your entire computer's restore disc/partition?)

If you can't reinstall POwerDVD, I would give the codec pack in that second link I posted a try. That way you should get a clean codec install and you should be able to play DVDs using WMP.

Hey thanks Mike. I've tried several un and re installs of the PowerDVD, including deleting empty folders and registry clean up but no joy.

I'll try the codec pack and see what happens.
