Gosh, I didn't think Japan at all! No wonder I was not having any luck in Eastern Europe. Good one Jim.

An Il-2 Sturmovik? It's hard to tell with the detail being so obscured.
Il 16, a high speed development of the legendary Il 2?
Keith
Not even close. The quality will be explained with the reveal.

A modified aircraft of some sort to represent a Japanese warbird in a movie?
I wonder if that engine were a turbo-prop

I was thinking a Daimler-Benz 600 series tucked in there.
Chinese, perhaps?
Italian maybe?
I think that we have a consensus. We haven't a clue what it is!
Ok will reveal early. It might be flown by Kim Ill Song (mispelled on purpose). Taken from a video from the 70s from a book on their armed forces. So only know the country and called an assault aircraft. Now you know as much as I on it. I not sure but might have seen one here before from there or maybe this is the first. Open House

I think it might an Ilyushin IL 10 - they received 50 from the then Soviet Union in the late 1940's

I assume this is a Frankenstein aircraft. Bit's and pieces of different aircraft. The gear retracts outward so wing not from Il-10.
On doing a little research the wheels could be Il-10 and retract backwards.

Here is a sporty post-war number.
(Speaking of post-war, where is Walter these days?)
I e-mailed Carlo back in July, enquiring after his health. Sadly, to date there has been no reply.
As for Walter, we have been indulging in a lot of older machinery recently, so maybe he is lying low.....
Do we yet know what is the subject of Chris' photograph and why it is so hazy?
