Thread: Forest Fires?

    Question Forest Fires?

Does anyone know of a good forest fire effect that can be placed with Instant Scenery or the Object Placement Tool? I've been using some older campfire effects, but I have to place a lot of them, and they still look kinda puny. Plus, they're mostly smoke and they don't extend very high (even if I up the scale).

So, I'm really looking for fire that can cover a large-ish area and produce good flame and smoke effects that extend up a little farther than the 600-700 feet I'm getting now. A good blackening effect for the ground would be a bonus.

Brian Cook I believe did some forest fire work back in FS2002. Not sure if they are still available at Flightsim.com, or if they will work for you. Might be a start.

I heard that FS Blaze by Scott Gridley still works in FSX.

    What is FS-Blaze?

FS-Blaze is a utility which places sensational forest fire effects as scenery within Microsoft Flight Simulator. The locations of the created fires are either of historical significance, user-created, or real-time for North America using daily data from NOAA.

From the NOAA website: note the red dot which represent a forest fire on 18th may in Florida

The same spot as depicted in FSX with FSBlaze v.1.1.7.0.

The effects are not perfect and rather fps consuming, but that could be improved I guess?

    Great with the PBY...

I know this won't help you right away but I've been working on some various forest fire effects and will eventually make them placeable with Instant Scenery. I've got 4 finished so far, they vary in size from 3-4 hectares and go up to 40 hectares.

Ah! Perfect! I'll be patiently waiting. :ernae: Those other suggestions might fill the void in the meantime. Thanks, guys.

Uhh... Doesn't FSX come with a forest fire effect?

I think there's info about it in the FSX/ESP SDK (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...reateanXMLFile).

There are only a couple of forest fire effects with FSX, I've never seen two forest fires that looked alike so having some variety is nice. Plus it's fun to mess around with the effects in FSX with the FX viewer tool that is available in the FSX SDK.
