The time has come to say goodbye...for now

    To all,

I am leaving tomorrow morning for Washington D.C, and on Sunday evening will be traveling to Vienna, Austria for a period of eight days, including Prague and Budapest in the trip. I will be back in action here full-time on Wednesday, May 27th.

I will use this thread to post pictures and pop in from time to time. I have asked Jag, Henry, and other SOH staff members to cover me in my absence.

:ernae:Rami ... remember ... DON'T DRINK THE WATER! (Just drink everything the "natives" drink and you'll be just fine ... perhaps a bit tipsy ... but fine none the less.)

Have a great trip ... and a safe one!

Have a lovely time, Rami. Watch out for those Euro-Damsels (remember National Lampoon's European Vacation - that was actually a DOCUMENTARY!!!!).

    Cheers,

    Gute Reise Rami!

Be sure to have a Goesser Stiftsbrau beer for me while in Austria.

As you can imagine, I'm a bit strapped for time, but I'll try and watch the basement while you're gone.

I made it to Washington DC (Sterling, actually) and aside from the memory chip not working in my camera, I arrived pretty much intact. The flight was a skosh bumpy, but it wasn't awful.

The flight from Dulles to Wein was very nice. Austria is much different. Visited the Summer palace and Wein's Inner Circle today, tomorrow it's the Austrian Parliament, European Union, and the United Nations.

I couldn't believe the Summer Palace of the Hapsburgs. That sculptured garden, fountain, and gate on the hill was absolutely amazing.

Ah. You must mean the "Schoenbrun." Quite a place and a gardener's delight.

    Dave,

Ja, the Schoenbrun. I am currently staying in the Hotel Schoenbrun, formerly the guest house, of the Schoenbrun palace. I can look out and see the eastern / western? end of the gardens from the hotel steps. Our group received a private tour of the palace grounds and the Austrian Parliament today, and one of our students managed to spark a debate between the Freedom Party and the Social Democratic Party about access to education in Austria. Quite an exciting thing!

I still can't get past the arcitecture, the wine, the beer, and the coffee. All incredible things!

I will check in again when I have free time. I must go to bed, tomorrow it is onto the United Nations.

If time permits, don't pass up on visiting Stephansdom cathedral and don't forget to take the tour of the catacombs underneath. You'll leave singing the old rag "Dem bones, dem bones, dem crazy bones." A hike up to the top of the tower will give you a great view of the city and there are outdoor restaurants featuring Vienese cakes and torts nearby.

    Jag,

We will also have a free evening on Sunday and Monday. I may have a chance to do it then.
