If the tree's are behind the smoke you see the smoke, if they are not you don't see the smoke.

Well..yeah... you are not in the same location I was in and I had the BBQ in plain unobstructed view, my view is different and no trees are in front.
Listen....I found a Utube tutorial that explains how to attach an effect to a blg using MCX. I will try to study that and see if I
can get same results as you did.......
I managed to add the smoke effect myself.. It's called adding an effect to a bgl file.

smoke... at same vantage point in your pic, over the top left side of the stearman wing? Your trees look different.
