UPLOADED: Spitfire Mk.VB Package (Early Variants)

The next installment of the Spitfire Mk.V package is on it's way. This one will cover the early variants of the Spitfire Mk.VB. Nine variants are included with a total of 19 skins. Modifications included are the initial production model, with further variants including such improvements as the ability to carry an external "slipper" tank for additional range, a blown canopy for better visibility and easier escape, improved ejector exhausts providing extra thrust, an integral armor plate windshield which reduced drag, and the improved Rotol constant speed propeller. Also included are the Merlin 46-powered high-altitude variant, and the short-lived night fighter variant of the Spitfire. Each of these modifications is faithfully portrayed both visually and in how the aircraft performs in game.

Here's the download link - should be active soon:

Make sure you install the Spitfire Mk.VA package as it includes shared files required for this package to work. It is available here:
    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...tfire_mkva.zip

The Real Systems Module included with the aircraft has all of the new features introduced with the Spitfire Mk.II release as well as a number of new features. The major improvements include:

-Completely overhauled wind sound effects for the cockpit and airframe.

-Cockpit shake effect influenced by such things as stalls, engine operation, engine damage, and gunfire.

-More realistic gun jams, which can now throw off your aim due to asymmetric recoil if only one cannon jams.

    -More realistic engine damage effects.

    -Improved fuel consumption accuracy.

If you have the Spitfire Mk.II installed, it will continue to function as before.

Make sure to read the installation instructions carefully. It will likely save you a lot of frustration.

If you're going to use the Real Systems Module, you must have the latest version of Ankor's shaders installed:
    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...4_dec_2019.zip

Also, make sure to familiarize yourself with the pilot manuals. Some of the systems are different from the Spitfire Mk.II, and will surprise you in unpleasant ways unless you read the Mk.V manuals.

    Happy flying everyone!

    CFS3 Spitfire Mk.VB (Early)

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 3 British Aircraft

Description: Spitfire Mk.VB Early Aircraft Set

This package contains a total of 19 Spitfire Mk.VBs.

The Spitfire Mk. V was intended to be a stop-gap aircraft produced to meet the ever-increasing demand for improved high altitude performance while a more extensively improved Spitfire was developed. It was planned to produce the Mk. V in two variants, the Spitfire Mk.VA, armed with eight .303 cal machine guns, and the Spitfire Mk. VB, armed with two 20mm cannons and four .303 cal machine guns. The Mk.VB would soon become the mainstay of Fighter Command equipping nearly all day fighter units, and also seeing service overseas. Initially more or less equal to the Bf 109F in the summer of 1941, it found itself hopelessly outclassed once the Fw 190A began arriving in significant numbers along the Channel Front. The Mk.VB would be continuously modified and upgraded in an effort to remain competitive with its Luftwaffe counterparts, serving well into 1944, though replaced by the Spitfire Mk.IX as the RAF's premier fighter in the second half of 1942. The aircraft included in this package represent the early development of the Spitfire Mk.VB, starting with the initial production model, with further variants including such improvements as the ability to carry an external "slipper" tank for additional range, a blown canopy for better visibility and easier escape, improved ejector exhausts providing extra thrust, an integral armor plate windshield which reduced drag, and the improved Rotol constant speed propeller. Also included are the Merlin 46-powered high-altitude variant, and the short-lived night fighter variant of the Spitfire. Each of these modifications is faithfully portrayed both visually and in how the aircraft performs in game.

Make sure you install the Spitfire Mk.VA package as it includes shared files required for this package to work. It is available here:
    http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforum...tfire_mkva.zip

The package also uses the CFS3 Real Systems Module, introduced with the release of the Spitfire Mk II and updated to include Mk.V systems in the Spitfire Mk.VA package. The Real Systems Module allows highly detailed modeling of aircraft systems and cockpit controls for a much more realistic flying experience. New features aircraft systems added by the module include:

    -Fully clickable cockpit!

-Fully functional Mk. II Reflector Gunsight with all controls modeled.

-Working radiator shutter with realistic effect upon engine temperatures - including engine failures due to overheating.

-Compressed air emergency undercarriage deployment system.

-More realistic gun and cannon operation, including a gun safety switch, gun jams, and freezing (pilot must use radiator to supply adequate heat to the guns).

    -Realistic British-style pneumatic brake system.

    -Realistic engine starting procedure.

    -Two-position mixture control.

    -Detailed fuel system management.

-Fully modeled pneumatic system which releases pressure with system operation, recharges pressure by an engine driven pump, can be damaged, and causes system failures when pressure gets too low either through use or damage.

-Pilot controlled lighting, including landing lights, navigation lights, and cockpit lighting.

-Realistic bailout procedure (must open canopy first, canopy will not open at high airspeeds, pilot cannot exit the aircraft while experiencing high g-forces or if badly wounded).

-Detailed animations of cockpit controls including numerous new sound effects.

-Support for TrackIR head-tilt for ALL CFS3 aircraft when using the Real Systems Module.

    -Many other new features.

-Detailed manuals and checklists to aid you in learning to fly the Spitfire.

The Real Systems module requires that you install the latest (2019 or later) release of Ankors Shaders before installing this package, as the new features of the Real Systems Module, as well as many visual enhancements are only active if the shaders are installed.

Simply incredible work. Genuinely one of the best Spit experiences you can have in any sim, despite the limitations of the CFS3 engine. It'd be a treat if those at WOTR implemented some of these features.

High praise indeed! Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it! I assume you are using the Real Systems Module - is it working reliably for you? Others have reported issues with this in the thread for the Mk.VA release, though it didn't show up in our testing. Just trying to see if the issues are widespread, or isolated.

James, those would be the all black painted ones: EB-W, JU-E, and JU-H. The exhausts of these aircraft are painted with red lead paint, which prevented the exhaust manifolds from glowing red hot. This did nothing to dampen the flames however, which played havoc with the pilots' night vision. EB-W and JU-E are fitted with plates on the upper cowling to shield the pilot's eyes from the flames. A bit more history here: http://spitfiresite.com/2010/04/nigh...spitfires.html

Thanks Daniel. A couple of points

1, I note in 1940, there was some success apparently with MkII Spitfires which I assume were in day camo.

"Spitfires were first used as nightfighters during the summer of 1940: the most successful night interceptions took place on the night of 18/19 June 1940 when Flt. Lt. "Sailor" Malan of 74 Squadron shot down two Heinkel He 111s of Kampfgeschwader 4,[18] while Flg. Off.s John Petre and George Ball of 19 Squadron each shot down one He 111 of KG 4.[19] A week later, on the night of 26/27 June, Pilot Officers R. Smith and R. Marples of 616 Squadron shot down another He 111 of KG 4; Flt. Lt. H. MacDonald of 603 Squadron shot down an He 111 of KG 26 and another He 111 of KG 26 was shot down, possibly with the help of A.A guns by Flg. Off.s A. Johnstone of 602 Squadron and J. Haig of 603 Squadron.[20]"

Off hand, do you remember if any of your SJ_Spitfire_MkIIA's fit those squadrons?

    2. I will check further on the VB's NF history to see if actually any positive results!

    3. In any case I would like to add some of these to the upcoming TOW 1939-1942 install (November probably) but with the addition of making 'FC" versions allowing Steve's app to operate them with Fighter Control. That means, besides just a change in name to add "NF" at the end of the model, etc., names to make short names such as "Spitfire MkIIA QVY N.F."

Do I have permissions to do that with of course the appropriate acknowledgements? (I assume the Real Systems Module would have to be added for those wishing to use it. Also all the other shared folders & files.)

Check with Steve and John, but I have no problem with it.

As for the earlier Spits, what you mentioned is all prior to the Mk.II reaching front line units, so those would all have been Mk.Is. But yes, as I understand it, day fighter squadrons still undertook night sorties as needed through 1940 and maybe into 1941 until a sufficient night fighter force had been built up, though I think it was more common to use Hurricanes for this instead of Spits.

    No problem James.

The Spitfire was dropped as a night fighter pretty quickly, mainly due to take off and landing accidents in the dark!

@ Daniel. You are correct re Spit I and BoB period night fighting!
@ John. Also true: as Dan pointed out elsewhere, they only lasted 3 months max in their NF role, with exhaust brightness issues and high nose making landing in particular very risky. I Just want to do a couple of Vb missions to make use of the nice NF versions.

Re this, I will clear off this thread now!

Wish these fighters had the smoke "tracer" effect that they do as Clive's and Daiwiilletti's BoB campaign expansion does. A really nice feature that isn't technically tracers. Just saying... Regards,Scott No complaints though. Nice work.

Is there a way to change to smoke "tracers" on the Mk II's and Mk V's for the .303 machine guns? Would that be a simple XDP editing thing ,or is there more to it than just importing from the BoB install ? Regards ,Scott

  17. #17
The early Mk.IIs have two guns that are loaded smoke tracers, and the references to them in the aircraft's xdp can be copied to other aircraft. And yes they are still tracers, and fell out of favor for use with RAF fighters for the same reason as all the other types of tracer: they do not give an accurate indication of where the majority of your rounds are going because they have different ballistic characteristics. They were considered a detriment rather than a nice feature. In RAF gun camera footage you don't see tracers after the Battle of Britain.

It was much better to be able to see the strikes so you know you are hitting the target. Tracers didn't show strikes, so the best they can do for you is to show you that the tracers are passing near your target (and hopefully hitting it) which would also be a solid indication that all of your more effective rounds are definitely not on target.
