    Reflective lighting from the moon

    Does anyone know if 1) the moon does produce a lighting effect, and 2) if so can it be adjusted?

    Tks

    tough flying at night with no reflections that I can determine.

    That's why i fly at Dusk... A great idea !

    Are you using AnKor's shaders? For me ETO in the Spring looks like this in QC when you select night in the location settings. Ignoring the pre-war city lights, note the moonlight shadows on the aircraft.

    I did have a time when everything looked way too dark to fly at night, and then I realized that I had some ReShade enhancements enabled that were causing it.

    Ok, what do you mean by Reshade settings? Could you share? If you could share your ini file and other relevant files... I know you have done this but I am a slow learner.....

  5. #5
    The issue with reshade was that I had routinely used

    [Levels.fx]
    BlackPoint=10
    HighlightClipping=0
    WhitePoint=245

    to enhance the daytime color contrast, but this drives all the darker shades at night to display as black.

    Turning off the levels effect for night flying restored reasonable nighttime visibility.

    It also helps to have a well calibrated monitor, and have the background room lights lowered.

    Thanks

    But where is that setting, that is which .fx file? I checked all the *.fx files I have......

  7. #7
    I believe Levels.fx is part of the default shaders package.

    Just try it with all the shaders unchecked and see if that makes a difference for night visibility.

    Question

    The shaders that you have listed below are the only ones that you are using? That is you deleted all the other ones and only kept the list. Second where is your null.ini, I seem not to have one.

    I just created a new one through the Reshade User Interface by unchecking all the shaders, and saving it.

    Reshade sure helps though I haven't found the perfect settings. Nice that it can be toggled on/off with a hotkey to revert back to daytime conditions.

    thanks MM

    Can you email me your reshade stuff. I have experimented a bit just not having the success you are.

    Is there a guide anywhere here for CFS3 users with Ankors Shaders?

    A guide relative to what?

    Reshade is not needed for night flying, and I actually just turn it off when I do.

    I assumed that's why Ted wants it and Daniel showed a night scene?

    Night flying is very dependent on having a well calibrated and capable monitor that does not convert most of the darker shades into black.

    That leaves you without any image contrast to pick out what's going on as if you're in a cave with no light at all.

    Reshade can either make this better, or worse depending on what you have the individual shaders set up to do.

    If they further clip the darker shades, that CFS3 has already compressed, to black then night flying will be worse.

    If they brighten the whole scene then it may be better (it will still lack much contrast, and may create 8-bit like banding).

    Please understand the difference.

    AnKor's Shaders are adding 3D object lighting, reflection, and shadow functionality to the basic scene rendering of CFS3.

    Reshade is taking that rendered scene and manipulating each pixel color and brightness in real time post-process to change how it looks as if you went into Photoshop and edited a screen capture.

    night flying

    With Ankor's shaders the night sky is very dark, at least for me. (New monitor on the way so....). The aim is to be able to see the silhouettes of planes at a distance. Without any aid it is nearly impossible to do so. Stock CFS3 you can see a silhouette but it takes some adjustments to t your approach. During the war pilots usually approached from beneath an enemy as to have the plane show in the night sky. Ground contrasts were difficult at best. Early in the war now exhaust shrouds were used (some but few) so exhaust flames and if there were shroud they glowed red from the heat and were usually visible from about 300 meters. We have these exhaust flames and at least for me at about 400 meters or so I can see a twinkle and at about 300 they become clear, nice target, if you are luck enough to approach from beneath the target. I have been able to get a silhouette using fog enhancements at about 1000 meters, but there are compromises. I think with more effort there will be a solution.

    It was very rare and difficult to intercept a plane in the early part of the war, ground radar (German) was able to position you in the area but the pilot and crew had to catch a glimpse of the target and then intercept. AI was great and hopefully we will have it for axis and allies soon.

    I am getting to understand the reshade application and options so.... Once I get a new monitor and fiddle a bit I will post some intercept videos. BTW I do not use labels or target indicators making it very difficult and when you are successful rewarding....

    Sorry, I should have said Steve posted the nice night scene, not Daniel! I will await Ted and his info. I am using a ? 9 year old Samsung 46" TV as a monitor. I suppose ZI could play around with it's settings as I am not getting a new one 'til I upgrade the PC in ? end May.

    Update, sort of

    Just connected my new monitor (32 inch) and well now need a new video card. The resolution settings are taxing my GTX 770, it is about 6 or more years old so that is to be expected. Love the big screen for my old tired eyes. Tried a TV but it failed to display the effects well and a disappointment. Just need a card that will handle 2560*1440 so we'll see.

    No news to report on the shader front. Still trying to sort though the options and effects of using each one or combinations.

    Any recommendations on a video card for intel based system would be appreciated (price does matter - at least that is what I tell my wife).

    Have a better monitor than i had with my last pc and now with AnKor's shaders it next to impossible to fight at night.Will try and follow what advice given and see if that works. Don't have this problem with "another" air combat sim with similar graphics. Quite frustrating. Maybe there will be a tutorial for us ,not so computer savvy , to get a better look for night time use. Where do i get this reshade
    i hear people here and at sas1946 talk about so much ? How do you install it ? Can you turn shaders off for night time use ? Seems so but not sure. Will wait for more info before i dive in too far and mess things up.

    Dear MajorMagee, I think i understand you now. Reshade doesn't turn off Ankor's shaders and you still get reasonable vision. Something i have is not calibrated right it seems.Strange ,it is only this sim i have a problem with night operations. Do you have your shader ini settings? Do i need custom Nvidia settings ? Used to be able to see at night and now i can't. Could be i'm getting olderand the ol eyes aren't what they were. Regards,Scott

    Start with a simple check like this.

    https://www.photofriday.com/info/calibrate

    Adjusting brightness, contrast and gamma so you can see all the discrete features on this image is a great start.

    Thanks MajorMagee ! My monitor was not calibrated correctly. Now i can see at night. Very dark ,but it is supposed to be. Still can see good enough to see the other aircraft .My fault the whole time. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused for someone. Regards,Scott

    Ankor's shaders do a great job of getting the nighttime nice and dark. Unfortunately, since I am using a laptop I find it hard to see the subtle variations in shades of black unless the room is completely dark. That's not usually practical in my household. It definitely helps when I use Reshade , though the tradeoff is that the ground is a bit lighter than I would like.
