Question Information on old af file format

I am working with a old cfs2 aircraft but it has texture files like name.1af, name.2af, name.2af. haw do you open these files and repaint them then save them to work with the orig Model file?
What is the editor best to use in editing? after editing how are the saved back to *af files? any information will be great. Thanks

    Oh yeah old R8 files.

I think you can use http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/programs/convr8.htm to open them. I remember saving 256 color bmp files and just changing the file extension to 1af, 2af .etc for CFS1 addon aircraft.

I used my old trusty Paint Shop Pro 6 to edit textures.

Look for ConvR8 or CFShow. I believe both utilities are available in Simviation.
A good approach is to go into the MDL with a hex editor and change the texture names to BMP extensions. That will work fine if the file names are the same length BUT the image files may need rotated or flipped.
