WIP: Repaint of a famous Virginias J-3 Cub

Got a repaint of Mike Cyul's J-3 just about there, just a few touches.

I tried to ask myself, since all J-3s look alike, what J-3 could I do that would be history, at least from my section of the world.

Well, I did not have to must to long, because the most famous Cub pilot in the state of Virginia and maybe the world is Charlie Kulp, aka :The Flying Farmer".

Charlie did his act for the last time on October 28, 2997 and now flies for leisure, but his old tried and true Cub, N70593 (named Victoria) will surely go into the Virginia Aviaton Museum in Richmond, where Charlie is already on the wall of Fame.

Here's a few test shots, when done, the paint will be uploaded here.

I do believe I've seen him fly....

Seems to me that he is the one that can turn his cub a full 180 without tipping his wings at all... A totally flat turn?????:ernae:

    Awesome work Caz!

You know, I didnt realise until just now, that Mikes Cub is paintable! For years I have wanted to make some cool paint schemes for the stock FS Cub but couldnt as it was almost designed not to be painted, (surfaces are intermixed and share other surfaces on the texture sheet). Now there is a high detail Cub and its totally paintable with what ever pattern I want to put on it!

    Very cool...

I think I should change the name from "Flight Replicas" to "Hot FS Porn", say there's a paintkit but just include a link to site that sells Photoshop, and actually change my name to Cyul because it's actually easier than the real one.

Hey, wait a minute! Who's taxing that plane?

That doesn't look like our pilot!

Oh me, he's off in the grass, somebody catch that plane, he'll kill himself, he's never flown in an airplane before!

He's going to hit those trees for sure!

Oh Lord, he is going to fly into the highway!

Shut the throttle, shut off the magnetoes!! Lower the tail and BRAKE!!

I feel privileged having known Charlie Kulp as a friend since the late 1970s, he's is one amusing character. He was always at an EAA pancake and sausage fly-in in Danville. He would always have a good time with Herb Cahill, owner of "Charlie Brown", the Aeronca 7AC Champ I first did a repaint for. Herb was just a few years older than Charlie, but no doubt they were sharing low and slow tail-dragger tales.

Nice to see that paint scheme! I've seen the Flying Farmer act a few times, and it' s been great each time. Can't quite figure out what you've done to our friend's face, though....

And here's a pic of someone else giving members of the FAA a heart attack. :faint:

It's a temporary joke Mike, i used a cutout of Charlie's face, but your model wrapped his beard, LOL! Your pilot is back in the seat. Charlie IS not included in the repaint.

    Awesome pics Cazzie!

I remember that pic Mike. He was restarting his engine... He couldnt get the wind to crank it over, so he climbed out and propped it himself.

    :d

Sounds like a bush pilot to me! Invincible...

For those who are unfamiliar with Charlie Kulp's "Flying Farmer" act:

Mike, I think you may be referring to Roger Lehnert, the UK's Flying Farmer.

Great video - thought he was going to go up on his nose a couple of times. :faint:

Didn't know there was another in the UK. The plane in the photo has a US registration - yet another? And to top it off, here's another 'Flying Farmer":

I miss going to Old Rhinebeck - had a lot of good times there.

That's Stanley Seagals, who performs a "Flying farmer" act at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in New York. Charley is the "original" Flying Farmer and started in 1978 at the Flying Circus Aerodrome in Bealeten, Virginia between Fredricksburg and Warrenton.

After Charlie retired his act in 2007, last year Greg Koontz, one of his former students and proteges, took over the Flying Farmer act at local airshows in the southeastern US. Charlie still owns N70593 and flies it out of Bealeton. He lives near Warrenton.

Great video. I remember seeing him back when I was a kid in San Diego at a fly-in.
