    The Best Clipper

Can someone recomend the best Clippers, for FS 2004, either the Boeing B-314, the Martin 130 preferred, or the Sikorsky S - 40 or the S - 43 , payware or freeware? i am hopeful to get interiors and cabins, as well as good aircraft and virtual cockpit ....for FS9...thanks for any suggestions. I have seen some in research but would really appreciate advise if anyone has the time I love those planes ...

Bill Lyons has done a very nice S-43 as part of the Golden Hawaii package, which is now available for free at Avsim (cc8ghf.zip). While there, get the C-130 by Jens Kristensen as well (m130_v10.zip). Mike Stone did a freeware B-314 without VC, and there's one payware B-314, available in two versions:

    http://secure.simmarket.com/pilots-b...nline-v2.phtml

    And the 'light' version: http://secure.simmarket.com/pilots-b...-version.phtml

George Diemer did a nice Sikorsky VS-44, which you can find at Flightsim.com (vs44aat.zip and vs44aea.zip)

He also did the S-40, but without a VC, try 's40nc80v.zip', also at Flightsim.com.

also, try Jens' Martin 130 at avsim. nice VC and flies in FSX.

The route was San Francisco - Manila via Hawaii, Midway Island, Wake Island and Guam. Only three M130s were built, and NC14716 'China Clipper' was the first, serving with PanAm from 1935 to 1942, when it was taken over by the U.S. Navy. The model works with FS2004, FSX and FSX SP2.

I want to thank you both VERY much , that was so nice of both of you to share all that, and just what i was looking for. If those do not have the full interiors i see in my dreams i will see about making them if the makers will give permission, i just love those planes a lot and have memories that keep that love alive, (i am a bit older than some here ) and saw seaplanes in active service and always have recalled that ....

i wondered about that beautiful plane by Jen, i read about it and looked at it, but i have my main install in FX9...will it work in that? i also have X but have not instaled it yet.....as i am studying a ton of the X9 mods )450 entries in my secenery library and a full hangar .......

but i will certainly dl and look at her, what a lovely job Jen did.

thanks again guys, i am very touched and grateful.

I wish one of our expert tweakers could adjust the odd texture mapping on the Bill Lyons S-43 so it would be easier to do repaints. I tried to do a 1941 Navy JRS-1 and it was a no-go. The textures are shared by various dissimilar parts of the plane. Guess Bill didn't want anybody repainting his stuff.

Yeah, that is a shame. I did a couple new paints for the plane...actually just replacements for the two that come with the Golden Hawaii package...to give the plane a better bare metal look. Those shared texture mapping thingies have killed a number of reskinning projects for me.

Do you have a link for your S-43 repaints, please, Obio?

There's a slightly earlier S-38 available as well.
Rats - why won't anything work properly first time?

If you don't mind no VC, Mike's B314 is extremely nice when combined with Ken Mitchell's panel.

FS2004 Boeing 314 Clipper. The mighty B314 Clipper was more of a flying hotel than a airliner. Carrying passengers on long overseas flights, it carried them in style and luxury, with suites, sleepers and a kitchen with its own chef. By Mike Stone.

I shined the S43 up a bit and changed the "decal sheet" up to make a Merc Air version a long time ago. But as for an actual repaint, I ran into the same problem Tarpsbird did.

    Hi,

you might want to have a look at this page at the California Classic website:

    http://www.calclassic.com/b314.htm

You can download Mike Stones plane and Ken Mitchell's panel there as well as a replacement FDE that includes updated flight dynmics, detailed handling notes and extensive background information.

    Best regards,
    Volker

A little addendum to my previous post: If you get the file 'vcb-vs44.zip' and install it you can use the keypad to look around the interior of George Diemer's Sikorsky VS-44.

If you like British flying boats, there are a lot by mr. Kristensen at Avsim:

    Short Singapore I : s5_v10.zip

    Short S.8 Calcutta: s8_v10.zip

    Short S.17 Kent: s17_v2.zip

    Short Empire: empire20.zip

    Short S.25V Sandringham: sand_v20.zip

    Short S.45 Solent: sol_v20.zip

All will work in Fs2004, just be sure to select the right sim when running the installer.

The last three Short 'boats' were based on the Sunderland WW2 RAF Flying boats; Stuart Green did a nice model of one of those:
    http://www.domicilium.com/peveril/ha...sunderland.htm

    slight correction Ferry,
the Empire boats, or 'C' class as they were known pre-dated the Sunderland, incidentally there was also the Shetland
    and Seaford

Before the war the only Clipper we were aware of was the Martin "China Clipper". The Boeing 314 came out late and was mostly known for carrying President Roosevelt around to meet Churchill.
As far as British ones, there was one that carried a small, twin float airplane on top that served as a extra gas tank. It would use up it's spare gas and then fly back to Great Britain. It was the only attempt to get clean across the Atlantic. That's as I remember it.
Would you like to ride in my big green tractor?.

Pan American Airways used the Clipper name starting with the Sikorsky S40 and continued it's use thru the later flying boats (S42, M130, B314, etc) and then continued to call it's land based airliners Clippers until the airline folded in the 90s. Eventually, Clipper became it's radio callsign much as Imperial/BOAC/British Airways uses Speed Bird.

    http://www.panam.org/default1.asp

click on history, then Clipper Names for a complete list of every aircraft Pan Am had that carried the Clipper name.

You're talking about the Mercury/Maia 'Mayo' (names of the planes, not types) combination, was done to get the airmail delivered,
the floatplane 'Mercury' sat on top of the Shorts 'C' class 'Maia', the two lifted off joined together, then the floatplane cast off from the flying boat

Gentlemen, i want to thank all for such wonderful help, i had some of these in my collection but having just fired up my first install of FS9, i needed guidance and you have all given that so kindly. Am in the air enjoying a beautiful vintage bird.

Ferry thanks so much for that post about the VS-44. and the interiors, that looks just like what i was looking for, much appreciated, and i do have some of the Shorts in my hangar but will study that list and get the rest, thanks so much.

I found a great page with a whole series of different skips for the Clipper:

PanAmPacific Clipper textures by Wayne Tudor and Dale Deluca are available at www.avsim.com

    filename is paab314.zip (1.2 mb)

PanAm Yankee Clipper textures by Wayne Tudor and Dale Deluca are available at www.avsim.com

George Diemer's Sikorsky S-38s and S-39 for FS2004 are not to be missed if you like flying boats. He even has an S-38 in PAA colors.

That panel isn't Mike's, that's why I copied the Flightsim.com entry above the Avsim entry. Mike and Tom Allensworth had a "disagreement" years back, and as a result, you won't find any of Mike's original files on AvSim. But most of them are on Flightsim, and I have copies of just about everything he did as well.

My S-43 Departing St Petersburg Florida on its maiden flight,

Oh My, thanks Tom, i am so sorry to have misunderstood. there is so much i dont know. I tried at Flight sim but no joy on the orginal panel and i searched everywhere else and so far, no luck. I did find the Real Moon and Real stars for the sextant :

    http://fsim.net/b314clipper/files/real_stars.zip
    http://fsim.net/b314clipper/files/real_moon.zip
    http://schaefernet.org/files/VBrun60sp6.exe
    http://fsim.net/files/B314_BBSX.zip

and a topic on Cal Classics on the challenges of the panel

    http://www.calclassic.com/cgi-bin/ya...num=1201405195

I would realy love to try the full Monty with that beautiful plane, and i still have my old nav skills from long ago.... i dearly love these planes and that era of true ships of the air.

i have an odd question if anyone has any ideas, this model of the S-43 has two pilots and some figures in the cabin but they appear and disapear, and i dont have a clue why? ARe they high end dynamic effects hence my system may be dropping the effect at times? dont have a clue but would love to have them there all the time .

There is a keystroke to make the pilots appear and disappear, but I don't remember what it is. Bill wrote some pretty good instructions in the readme file.

Golden Hawaii was the first piece of payware I bought for FS and the S43 is still a favorite of mine.

  23. #23
thanks Willy, i will search the read me....i was so eager to get her in the air i kinda skimmed that

and now, Mike's S 314 is flying from my hangar what a beauty she is, I believe she is actually the S 314A model, 314A’s. The 314A had increased passenger accommodations. It had two decks, upper or control deck and main passenger deck. Its passenger capacity was sixty-eight day passengers and 36 sleeping passengers. It had a range of 3,685 miles.

Specifications: Wing span 152', Length 106', Height 27'7", Weight empty 48,545 lbs, Useful load 33,995 lbs, Fuel 4200 gals, Oil 300 gals.

I am now trying to set up some terminals...and i am seeking help on the BGA site to see if anyone has converted their wonderful scenery of most of the Pan Am Terminals from FS2002 to FS9, i tried instaling them but they are in the format for AFD.bgl and dont show up right yet as far as i can tell.

PAM AM terminal scenery for FS 2002:

    http://www.bluegrassairlines.com/bgas/hangar/2002.html

If anyone out there has a copy of Mike's orignal Panel with all its features i would love to get a copy if poss, i do have the great replacment by Ken Mitchell but the original by Mike has some features that are unique and I would dearly love to get a copy.

thanks for all the help so far, this is an exciting journey. Just need to try to get some terminals set up so i can land somewhere and set up a good schedule

This Pan Am clipper port scenery is for 2004, it's not bad. It works with Golden Hawaii without a problem.

I've been trying to talk a designer into an FS-X Boeing 314, but no luck so far...

I'd say the Short airplanes by Jens B. Kristensen are the best.
