    Gmax Export Problem

    Hi All,

Having an issue when exporting a AGM that was modified (nose pitch up) in gmax.
    My steps:

Opened *.bgl file in MCX then exported object as 3Ds file.

Started gmax and imported 3Ds file. Saved as a "scene" file. Closed gmax.

Started gmax again and modified the missile to a nose pitch up. Saved file.

Went to export, using fs2002 gamepack and it throws up the error,
"Flight simulator files are specified in meters. This model is not stored in meters."
It will make a *.bgl but it will not open in MCX. Error, "This is an empty model".

I've searched the internet for a day now with no real solution that has worked.

    Any clues for this fubar?

    Thanks, Dave

Never seen this error and what is a "scene"?

Scene is just the file when saved in gmax. A gmax file.

Edit: Just found this from fs developers by Hairyspin.

Most of us know the System Unit Scale must be 1 unit = 1 metre for Gmax to successfully export to FS.
Some recent posts talked about problems with building work in other software and then exporting to Gmax only to find problems with units being in feet or inches.

There is an easy way to convert this work once in Gmax.

If the work was modelled in (say) inches and is displaying correctly in Gmax
with the System Unit Scale set to 1 inch,

then open a new scene with System Unit Scale set to 1 metre
and make sure Automatic Unit Conversion is ticked.
It's on the Preferences/General tab, just below System Unit Scale.

Now merge the imported work to this scene and Gmax will convert the inches to the correct fractions of metres.

    Simples!
Off to give it a try. Fingers crossed.

    Hi Dave,
I get this with FSDS items. It's a scale thing and/or measurement unit that is not recognised.

What I do is I have just made a simple basic cube in FSDS. When I get this prob I load the cube and then import the problem file, merging the two. Save as an FSDS file, close, then re-open/import, delete the unwanted cube (leaving the file I want), and re-save. This then re-calibrates the scale/units used and then I can fully use the file.

You can do exactly the same thing with Gmax, give it a go and see.....

    Cheers

Ha ha only just fully read your above reply, does then same thing......!!

Don't think I have ever seen a prob with unit of measurements as I have used both feet and meters just fine for aircraft. Not sure if this is a BGL special bug that wants only meters?

I use FSDS but I know that you can resize a model in MCX, But not sure if that helps in your situation ??

    Sorry Dave

    Wish I could help...

    Hey Gents,

Thank you for all of the tips and responses.

It finally exported ok. Turns out either Hairyspin's or Shessi's "methods" were the cure.

Ran the file through Allen's Explo_Objs utility and all is as fine as wine.

It might need a little more angle added plus smoothing, but at least the routine is down pat.

    Thanks!
    Dave
