Those are Air Sea Rescue markings. No. 278 Squadron, among others, used Spitfires to spot and mark downed pilots, and drop supplies or inflatable rafts to them while they awaited pickup.

It is still active. I saw that when I was putting together the writeups. Actually I learned there are several countries which have done similar things maintaining a lineage to RAF squadrons - No. 350...
I was more meaning the 322 Squadron being represented, but I suppose there is explicit reference to the monarchy. I must say though, I was both impressed and amused by the current king's double life...
