Carl Vokes just released an update of his ship locator which can help you to find ships across the planet when using the Global AI Ship Traffic V2. Carl has once again done a really nice job tracking the more than 1100 ships, over 1800 and 22660+ ship voyages included in the project. This program contains: A folder for Google Earth with the routes shown, the number of the route and what ships are on that route. A sailings list with departures and arrivals of each route. A list of all the ships names and the routes you can find them on.

Unfortunately some of my ships have been included in a Syrian Coast project released on Rikooo without appropriate permission - please do not download and install as it is incompatible with the Global AI Ship Traffic Project. If you already did - you should reinstall the Global AI Ship Traffic project overwriting files from the Syrian Coast project. I am trying to get the file removed ASAP.

The Syrian Coast scenery has now been taken down from Rikoooo and will be replaced with a file without ships from Global AI Ship Traffic. For those who eventually installed this scenery and had already Global AI Ship Traffic installed you will have lost maybe 10-15% of the global AI ship traffic as the Syrian project overwrote the sim.cfgs in several ship folders from the Global AI Ship Traffic and removed a large number of ships. I will post a patch over the weekend so that you don't have to reinstall everything.

I agree! The support you're offering to cover other people's theft is amazing. A very annoying and insulting incident.

Annoying yes, but at least Rikoooo was fast in taking the file down limiting the damage.

Below is a patch for Global AI Ship Traffic to be used in case you have installed Syrian Coast available on Rikooo.com in January or February 2020. The Syrian Coast project included without permission a number of ships and effects from the Global AI Ship Traffic project and was consequently removed from download by Rikoooo on February 7th.
The damage occurred when the Syrian Coast project on installation replaced the sim.cfg's in the boat file folders and thereby removed a great number of ships from the Global AI ship traffic.

To repair the dammage please install the files in this patch overwriting the respective folders in your FSX or P3D installation.

The files included in this patch must under no circumstances be uploaded to any site or shared individually or as a whole without prior written permission from me.

The problem is confined to the Syrian Coast Scenery. Rikoooo is just the host and probably did the installer without knowing that the developer had used files without permission and that they were altered compared to the originals in a very unfortunate way. Erik from Rikoooo responded almost immediately to my contact and removed the scenery.

I understand it was not their doing,
I have the Seychelles Islands downloaded from there, and it has lots of ships in the area and I was just wondering if that was something similar.

Thanks and thanks for borrowing me the Fearless and Intrepid - with them in I think in the end I will just miss one or two ships from the first 24 hours of the landings. But there is still work to do, but at least today I got an impression of how it will work out in the sim.

I modeled a HAS 1 (1 engine 4 exhausts) for the '66 version of the Victorious which you're free to use. If you want a HU5 (twin engine 2 exhausts) I can probably mod it fairly quickly.
Drop me a PM.

First it must be so far :D The Canberra kept me entertained for far longer than expected due to all those round shapes… If I had started doing classic ship models with their beautiful curved lines and not modern ships with containers and straight lines the Global AI Ship Traffic would have had only 110 models by now and not 1100...

Looks like one of the static ORBX ships, isn’t it? The pictures further above from Larry’s shipping are beautiful. He has done a fantastic job with both the ships and the land facilities. We tried to coordinate a bit our routes for the area as it is narrow with a lot of traffic. Hope it works😀

Hi thanks. Its V2 from flightsimnorway.
I realized that it's happen with some ships but others are fine. For instance a red large container with white deck is affected (next to LIRF) and also a warship F966 in front of Alessandria (Egypt)

This opens the question wether aircraft and ships are so differing or may be equal...
Fact is both kinds of movers need buoyancy and both are movers in a three-dimensional world ... very similar (for a common forum)...
The difference is - ships should use only two (viz. X and Y) of the three dimensions - otherwise something has really gone wrong!:nightmare:

Good question... I wish I could answer, but currently I am producing a lot of classic ships, so odds are that I will do a separate package which will draw on both the classic ships already included and add a bunch of new ships including Falklands and a completely new set of routes for the classic ships, so there will be at least two but maybe three different periods - 1960-1970, 1975-1985 and then the modern package which will continue to be the most complete with over 1150 ships. For the 75-85 period I guess I have around 200-250 ships - for 1960-1970 maybe around 150 at this point, but speaking with the rest of the team the number might increase significantly.

Henrik, these look superb.

The period bracket you cite would be perfect - I had your ships instalalled in FSX, but haven't yet in P3D, because I wanted to limit my shipping environment to primarily the classic period.

If it's possible for the ships from the period of 1950-1970 to be segregated, that would be superb, because then I can create a "classic period" shipping install separate from a "modern period" install and one or the other.

Anyway - looking forward to these.

Thanks :D It will be two completely different set of routes. I want to recreate a realistic shipping from the time, and then there shouldn't come a 400 metres long container giant spoiling the nostalgia... I won't be able to cover the whole globe - at least not in one go, so wishes to focus areas are welcome - and better if some classic sceneries exist for the area.

Hi Henrik,

My suggestion would be where there’s already some good FSX compatible Calclassic scenery. So nodes I’d consider:

New York
Miami
Havana
Beirut
Hong Kong
Calcutta
Seattle
Los Angeles
Honolulu
Lisbon
Nice

As examples. Excited for this package, whatever you decide.

Many kind thanks.

Yes, that is the intention. Several of the new models I can document have been to Vietnam during the conflict, so besides all the new carriers coming along at the moment you will also have the civil traffic.

Sorry for the annoying question in advance but P3Dv4 does accept FSX boat/ferry routes as-is or?

Thanks! Just bought P3Dv4 like a few weeks before it got upgraded - sigh, but happy I did.

This will work in FSX and all P3D versions released so far - I just do my initial testing with a default version of FSX to check the routes compared to default coastlines.

This is a wonderful collection that has breathed new life in to FSX for me. Thank you.I have one question; I fly mainly in the south of England and have HMS Illustrious and her Type 45 destroyers and HMS Ocean in convoy. As they sail in to Portsmouth they are colliding with a Solent fort which is constructed on spit of land and piling up on each other. Is there a way to slightly alter their course as the convoy heads towards Portsmouth harbour?I have tried using AIFP but although it loads the traffic file it shows nothing. I have tried BGLAnalyze as well and it says it cannot read the file either.I would really like to get the RN back to port!Thank you.

Why not use AIBTC instead?
AIBTC.exe http://lc0277.gratisim.fr/boat/

Decompile the traffic file that’s crashing into Solent fort, re-map out your route using google earth and use the above tool to recompile. That’s what I do anyway and find it easy to add new routes.....I’ve got type 21s and 22s sailing out of Guz and Ark Royal with destroyer escort sailing out of Pompey.

Out of curiosity do you know where the bgl came from in the first instance/what tool was used to create it? As I’ve yet to come across a boat traffic bgl that couldn’t be decompiled using AIBTC so assuming it’s been compiled using that method I stumbled across ages ago (creating water “taxiways” and having ships “taxi” along it using an aircraft flight plan tool.... ‘orrible!)

Thanks for your help with this Gary.
The .bgl file is included in the Global Ships Traffic v2 that this thread is about.
I downloaded that program you suggested and pointed it to the folder I have the file in but it doesn't seem to see it/ load it.

----

Oh hang on a minute - I've got it working now. I chose wrong folders for source and destination.
It's making sense now thanks.

Managed to open the .kml in a flight planning app as you can see - the course takes the boat straight into one of the solent forts. I just need to shift that over a bit.

Blame Orbx England as the forts are not there in default scenery.

What am I doing wrong?

What is the name of the .bgl you are using?
I will look and see to adjust the plot if I can know the name.

You can also open the .kml in Google Earth and adjust it yourself (if you have GE).

The sailings are spread across multiple .bgl's. Each one represents one of the fleet - they're not in convoy in a single .bgl.
Lusty in one, then Duncan, then Dragon, Then a couple of other earlier destroyers then Ocean bringing up the rear.

I tried to edit the .kml in GE but could not find a way to do it.

Thank you so much for looking at this.

Gary,

Your help and advice has led to a whole new set of skills that I've kind of been getting the hang of today and will go on studying and hopefully become conversant with.

Watching the convoy manoeuvre in and out of Pompey today according to courses set in .kml files, converted to .bgl, and timings, etc, has been great.

Isn't this a wonderful hobby and what a great place SOH is.

Henrik,
Bear in mind the changes I had made and those of Jim are with respect to ORBX scenery. They may not be workable for the generic FSX or P3D scenery. You have very successfully produced routes for the thousands(?) of your ships. Be careful not to fall down the slippery slope of "make it correct for all simulators and all variations of scenery".:encouragement:

@ Jim - You found my PM helpful, eh ?

I will test them in FSX standard, however the routes are generally optimized for ORBX Vector and diverse photo sceneries as they generally match Google Earth - that method with Google Earth however does have the flaw that small "things" in the sea tend to be omitted by Google Earth so I have had ships sitting solid on small rocks forgotten by Google but not by ORBX or even FSX standard. Anyway, somewhere in the manual it tells that you will have some stranded ships once in a while especially if just using FSX standard - e.g. for Amazonas river traffic FSX is just hopeless.

Well I finally have this amazing package working in FSX. What a delight, brings the world to life in more ways than one. I just want to say thank you to Kl791 and others and to say how much this is appreciated and enjoyed. As I tend to do a lot of flying boat simming - to get this working and to be constantly surprised but who or what turns up is just great. Today I was testing some new scenery for Madeira and had the Solent flying boat in Funchal Harbour. There was a big white portugese 4 master and several other merchantmen coming and going and the odd liner or two. Very very impressive.

A humbling experience was that I could not get them to show for a very long time and I finally found the culprit(s) several old FS9 traffic bgl's that had been lurking on my system. With them cleaned out - all appeared as if by magic. Now to see how it goes with P3DV5 (another job for another time!)

So again thank you and when the classic ships become available - add me to the list!

It makes it easy to spot them from over the horizon but isn't very realistic.

One question on the side regarding your water texture and color.

Is there any addon you recommend for FSX to improve water appearance (darker blue hues, less milky, more reflectivity) ? I have REX Essentials w/OD Texture Pack but it only alters the animations/textures, not the water color.

Thank-you,

Grabbed it last night and installed right away.

Nothing short of stunning, Henrik!

BTW, for anyone who likes retro AI boat traffic and wants to keep the density of the original FSX/P3D (in my case P3D) boat traffic file but doesn't want the default modern ships, I'd suggest cherry picking some of your favourite cargo and cruiser vessels from this pack after using AIBTC to decompile, and changing the assignment in the boat file, then recompiling. This way you get all the original traffic density PLUS all that Henrik's traffic bgl's add.

Took me less than an hour, and now in addition to the added traffic from Henrik's files, you keep the extra volume that the original default traffic file contributes, only now with whichever of Henrik's boats most suits your fancy. I kept the general categories, replacing the default tankers, cruise ships, etc. with Henrik's classic ships of similar function - bingo. Instant (extra) AI boat traffic. I can share the substitutions, if people are interested. The only hard part was deciding which of the gems to pick - there's so many good ones. Thankfully you're still going to see them all in Henrik's traffic files - they're all works of art. But if there's ones you'd like to see more of, then this approach will add retro traffic.

Note, unlike Henrik's traffic files which are are route-specifically accurate, doing this will add vessels to routes that aren't likely to be super accurate. For example, I replaced one of the default large cruise ships with the Canberra - because it's so lovely and graceful. So I'll see her on routes she likely never sailed, but ... whatever - these ships are too gorgeous to only occasionally stumble across.

So a huge thanks again, Henrik!

If one has not said so before - amazing package of vessels - a prodigous effort. Thank you!

Now a slight problem with wakes in P3DV5. I noted the advice in the preceding blogs about checking the wake.fx files and entries. I have done that thoroughly all comply and all the LM wake files are also good. But I am still getting this vertical wake - but only on some ships not all - it almost random. Because if I indentify the vessel and check the wave file it is ok. Any ideas. Oh yes, I also did a complete reinstall with fresh downloads and have no other maritime traffic or AI excepting what may have been there by default.

Yes, you can do that. You might have a ship collision or two once in a while as routes might overlap, but there is no technical issue.

Both the ships you show here use the default fx_wake_l which is not provided in the package, so you must have a defect wake eventually downloaded with some other ship or scenery. Now just to check -
which version did you download "Global AI Ship Traffic V2" or something earlier? The Global AI Ship Traffic V2 from flightsim.com, simviation.com or flightsimnorway.com will have the correct wakes but for the two ships you show it depends on the default wake you have installed, so I guess you have the right package but a corrupted default wake. I can upload a default wake if needed.

Henrik,

I've made the mods to Invincible so she's more in keeping with her early service years (7 degree ski-ramp, sea dart with type 909 trackers, no goalkeeper) and stuck a couple of FRS1 on the deck with late 70's/early 80's (pre-Falkland's) paint kit.
Couple of issues with the bow wake positioning...once I've resolved that she's over to you for sea trials :adoration:

That looks so splendid, Gary - I'm beside myself with excitement. It's been Harriers and RAF/RN helos all the time of late, and this rendition of the Lusty is very much what the doctor ordered.

Henrik, earlier in the thread, there was an HMS Ocean - is that available anywhere, or is that part of a separate project? Would love to have that one in P3D if/when it's ready. Especially with the night lighting you were working on.

cheers all,

dl

PS - In P3DV4, I've only added this latest version (Global Classic). In FSX, I've added past packs such as Global v1. Is it "safe" to add FSX-era packs like that one to P3D4, from a "wake" point of view?

I've had quite a few instances of "vertical" wakes from ship effects I dragged over from FSX carelessly only to find out they had the annoying effect.cfg issue I had to hunt down and correct. They obviously weren't your ships, but I'm checking since with the 200-ship pack, I really don't want to be chasing those effects down if it's known they'll misbehave in P3DV4.

Thanks,

dl

Pic 1 one ship has correct wake one does not

Pic 2 typical vertical wake

Its typical issue with missing entry in model cfg. Its not a wave effect issue but cfg file of the model.
But its an FSX corner, you asking about Ultra water in P3Dv5. For FSX no any issue like this.

I have modified your Gearings as Fram I. Two types served the Armada. Could it be interesting to include them in the package?

Anyone noticed that with HMS Fearless, there's an oddity with the wake and smoke?

It's as if the bow wake and smoke are shifted aft, roughly a ship's length or so.

Am seeing this in P3DV4.5.

From testing of Earl Watkins' "Adams" Class destroyer in P3D v4 we (Team SDB) found that P3D doesn't handle coordinates in effects the same as FSX. In fact it seemed that it didn't at all. So we had to change the attachment point of the two smoke effects to be at the individual smoke stacks rather than a single point with the offset built into the effect. We made the adjustment using MCX. Hope this helps.

So the solution for P3D is that this needs to be changed in the model with MCX?

Yikes. Any tutorials on how to do this?

thx,

Update - again, apologies this in the FSX thread, but it's clearly the active thread on this topic.

I'm noticing some real weirdness RAN HMAS Melbourne, with the forward wake, lights-basically all the effects are shifted forward almost a ship's length.

Will this need to be edited in MCX too? This is a more recent ship than the Fearless, so I'm surprised that it, having been for the P3D pack, had issues.

Thoughts?

thanks,

Of course I would like to include them :D :D :D

I might also want to remodify them with other navy textures as this version was present almost all over in the sixties, seventies and early eighties.

I will have a look at it - but are you with the stand alone version here from SOH or with the version included in the Global AI Ship Traffic?

Hi Henrik,

I got mine from the Global Pack.

Thanks for looking into this.

Hi Henrik,

I got mine from the Global Pack.

Thanks for looking into this.

Actually - I found my problem.

After tearing my hair out learning MCX and trying to reposition effects wouldn't "move" - I discovered the issue.

First, I realized in some (many?) of your boats, it looks you've baked in other effects into your wake, such as smoke and lights. I realized this when tried substituting the default wake on the Melbourne with another from one of the HMS destroyer classes. When I reverted back to the default you intended, the weirdness went away.

So in effect, there is no issue per se with your vessels.

That all said, somewhere along the line of installing all the new vessels, my "default" wakes that come with the P3D sim seem to now be corrupt, or they've somehow gotten overwritten by an older/uncompatible version. These include fx_wake_m, wake = fx_wake_l, fx_wake_s, so far as I checked - there may be others. The problem is hard to describe, and it's not the "vertical" wake problem - but rather the wake emanate in strange white 3D wisps above the surface level and extend aft, above the water, instead of staying flat to the water surface.

In particular, since the Melbourne calls for wake = fx_wake_m, and it being messed up as explained above, I sought to replace it, and discovered that what I need is a simple flat wake, not the more complex "wake+smoke+lights" type effects that boats in your big pack typically come with.

So I guess, if someone knows that their default P3Dv4 stock wakes still work correctly, and either a) know where to download those wakes, or b) is willing to post those three wakes (fx_wake_m, wake = fx_wake_l, fx_wake_s) as attachments, I'd be much obliged, as mine seem to be irreparably damaged somehow.

Thanks, and (self-induced) frustration aside, I've learned a lot about how these ship models are integrated with effects, and how to tweak. I might end up tweaking some more as I learn.

cheers,

dl

Thanks expat!!!!

Unfortunately, it looks like it wasn't the state of my wakes. Substituting those you just posted gave the same wispy nearly non-existent wake. And I tried that same wake (fx_wake_m) on another ship, and it gave the same results. Maybe it's the texture associated with the effect, don't know.

Here's a shot of the HMAS Melbourne. Stock sim.cfg, stock effect. Notice all that presents is the wispy bits near the front, and no actual wake emanating from the middle/rear of the boat.

Ideas appreciated.
