MK210 as flown by Lt.Col Gustav Lundquist of the USAAF, Test Section, Boscombe Down. He made an emergency landing on Greenland while returning to the UK from the US. The Spitfire had been testing long range tanks at Wright Field. While waiting for spare parts, a mechanic, sgt Petta asked if he could paint nose art on the aircraft. When Col Lundquist returned, this was the result. On return to Boscombe Down, the noseart was removed and hung above the bar in the officers'mess.

Great stuff! For me the IX is the Spitfire shape, probably formed by the fact that the RNoAF flew this mark for most part of the war and therefor it is the most photographed mark in Norwegian books.

Did he fly a Spit from the US and back to the UK? Drop tank or not, that sounds like a very scary flight if you ask me!

Sorry, guys, if you downloaded them real quick, I mixed up some VC textures. So if you see the wrong wings from the VC, please download again.

Does a Bear take a dump in the woods?
Just roll it out and I'll be very happy to add it to my hanger.

I have the A2A and RealAir Spitfires and love both, but the RealAir's still the only one I've accumulated repaints for and these will add nicely to my collection, Jan Kees. Top work as usual! :applause:

Like Dave said, there's just something about the RealAir Spitfire that keeps me going back to fly her time and again. :biggrin-new:

The included rendering of RAF West Malling complete with AI Spitfires is rather nice, too.

Highly recommended and exceptionally well catered for if you're a repaint fan.

One thing I love is the compare between the sound sets of the A2A to the Realair , compare them both to the change and development within such a short time, only way I can compare it was a Hurricane was rebuilt here and on startup and ground run tests it near smack on to the A2A early Spit ... then to here the more throaty Realair Spit to the Mk16, go for it JK.

But the A2A Spitfire uses sounds recorded from a P-51 so sounds nothing like a Merlin III on either a Spitfire, or a Hurricane!

(From memory, the RA Spitfire IX & XIV uses a mixture of Merlin and Griffon and other engines, and doesn't really sound like either to me!)

Anyway, nice repaints Jan Kees.

Looking forward to the XIV repaints!

I'd tend to agree with that Paul:encouragement: One thing though.. regardless of accurate either model sounds.. the 'fly by' sounds on the RA Spit are far superior to A2A's. Music.. pure and simple:very_drunk:

SOUND :cool:I disagree with the disagree'ers .. there is also a huge different in the sound pitch between the Merlin and Griffon, the early Merlin did had a more milder sound and is very distinctive in the air .. all it takes is the exhaust change, the doppler sound on the fuselage and to finish it off the extra power up to that 1600 to 2000 HP .. course the blades add a mix to the sound flavour ....

Those Spitfires are sensational!! That is such a great model, and you can never have too many repaints for it. I downloaded them all!!
Was wondering if Jan Kees would give any thought of doing the Museum of Flight's MK923?? That airplane was flown during the Normandy Invasion, and like so many others, went to the Dutch before ending up in Belgium. The "survivor" was later in the Movie "The Longest Day" and owned by actor Cliff Robertson. It was flown at Airshows by the legendary WWII RAF pilot Jerry Billing across the US and Canada for so many years. The airplane was a regular flyer until the last owner did not want to restore the originality of airframe and donated it to the Museum of Flight. It is just a beautiful airplane that I was lucky enough to see fly a few times before she was put away for History's sake. Still a stunner even sitting in the Museum.

Very nice work as usual Jan Kees.

(Still catching up on downloading all your RA Spitfire repaints).

One thing you might want to do is remove the 'rogue' rear access door that is on the port side of the fuselage, from the bump map.

(Marcel Ritzema did this for his repaints I seem to recall).

Good point Jens-Ole.

(I forgot to mention that in my previous post!)

The other thing I would say is that the default colouring/effect on the exhaust ports could do with adjusting to look more realistic. Currently, it doesn't look quite right to me, and hides the shape and the nice modelling of them.

Btw, do you have any more repaints planned or in the works for the RA Spits?

I contacted the Real Air support wanting to know if there was a way to manually download the textures for archival purposes.
They responded that the only way to get the extra liveries was to use the installer program; the liveries are installed to the
directory automatically where your main Spitfire is located, otherwise, they suggested making copies of the installed textures.

Not sure i follow you, extra liveries can be installed into the realair spitfire as any other fs addon aircraft. Or was you talking about something else?

I think it looks nice JanKees :encouragement:. But perhaps a bit difficult to judge based on just a few images made under similar light conditions. But from experience I know it is difficult to find the right alpha-spec-bump combination on this model to create realistic metal look.

Looking forward to test your efforts,

I was talking about how the repaints are automatically installed via realair installer (an all or nothing option). What I was interested in was the downloading the actual repaints as a zip file that way I can just activate the ones I want to reinstall later. Otherwise, I have to find the textures and zip them myself. I wanted to select and intsall just the liveries I wanted.

Yeah, I got at least 15 Spitfire IX paints which I never have released. Sort of ran out of steam before I had them packed up and ready for released..

Well, the first part is good to know!

Maybe you'll release them one day.

That silver USAAF scheme is looking nicer still Jan Kees.

One other detail regarding your repaints I forgot to mention was for the removal the depicted red fabric adhesive cover on the outer (short) cannon stub.

In reality, this was hemispherical and solid (as seen in attached picture of MKV AR501), but for some reason, RealAir modelled it like the inner 0.5" gun port, as on the 'e' armament wing.

The other thing I would remove is the stencilling for the wing leading edge fuel tanks, which were only a feature of the MKVII, VIII, XIV, & XVIII.

Cheers

Remember AR501 is preserved, and not necessarily typical of a period a/c, though. That prop and engine make it effectively a IX after all.

Remember AR501 is preserved, and not necessarily typical of a period a/c, though. That prop and engine make it effectively a IX after all.

Well, not really!

The DH prop, whilst not the version fitted to the Spitfire, is close to the type fitted to MKVs in Lieu of the Rotol type. And the multi ejector exhausts were often fitted to MKVs with low altitude Merlins, such as the 50M/55M.

AR501 at the time the picture was taken, had a approximately a Merlin 45 (single stage/single speed supercharger), the type fitted to MKVs and not MKIXs (two speed/two stage supercharger).

Anyway, the point of the picture was to show the outer hemispherical blanked off cannon stub (the same as fitted on early wing MKIXs), which as I said, is square on the RA model, and should be as in my picture!

I would point out that the cannon shroud/fairing (whichever you prefer to call it) is the wrong type for the MKV, as this would be the tapered type, again as per MKIXs with the early wing.

(Whilst it looked the same as the 'c' wing of the MKV, the early MKIX wing was never officially referred to as having a 'c' wing, or called by that variant i.e. a MK.IXc).

So other than the cannon shroud/fairing being the wrong type, AR501 is to all intents and purposes (with a large number of embodied modifications) how a late MKV would have looked during WWII!

Cheers

Huub, apparently, you need to login at OZx before you can download at the moment, no idea why this is the case at the moment...

gray eagle, all photorecon Spitfires were in principle blue, both US and RAF ones. The one you show was a 'private' aircraft, and should be bare metal. Did I make it too blue? (This may sound as a stupid question, but I am rather colorblind..)

and the fun bit about Spitfires is that you can just continue painting them:

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww230/jcblom60/Spitfire/ss23230.jpg (http://s722.photobucket.com/user/jcblom60/media/Spitfire/ss23230.jpg.html)

here, I'm not 100% sure about the color, Foliage Green. What do you think, too light?
And yes, it should be a Mk VIII, but close enough I think.

Now I am confused, here is part of your readme in your (JK_RealAir_Spitfire_USAAF_EP-A.zip):
This folder contains a repaint for the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX by Real Air. It shows USAAF Spitfire IXc EP-A, which was the personal aircraft of Lt.Col. E.P. Allen of the 9th Tactical Air Command, England, 1944. Rumour has it he traded his Mustng with the RAF for this Spitfire.

It looks blue to me and I thought that it was supposed to be blue.

jankees
December 18th, 2015, 07:17
so no photorecon, but rather the 'personal'aircraft of Col Allen. It has no camera's either.
As for the color, if it looks blue to you, then possibly it is blue(ish perhaps?), that would be my mistake then..it looks light grey to me, but as I said, I have no idea

any comments? And what did you make of the color of the RAAF spit I posted earlier. Not too blue, was it?
I seriously do like these weathered Australian paint JK ... simply something about your skill really showing here :encouragement:

Hi Jan Kees,
beautiful repaints as usual!!!
Just one thing though... I think the Stork insignia of RAF No.329 Squadron (GC 1/2 "Cigognes") should be just below the windscreen... What do you think?
Best regards,

Hi Jan Kees,
this version is a bit disappointing to me... Let me explain:
You've produced lots of fantastic repaints, I especially like your "Eleonor" repaint and I was hoping for the same quality.
I find the "Stork" insignia of this repaint to be very blurry... May be does it come from the fact that it is an interim version?
Anyway, I must thank you for all the work done and the time spent!!! :ernaehrung004:
Cheers,

Stéph.

oh dear, disappointment, we can't have that. Apparently I was a bit too quick with my changes, due to a lack of time. Next time I'll need to let you wait a bit longer and make sure it is the right version. Try downloading (http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/5835-real-air-spitfire-ix-5a-l-free-french-no329-sqn/) again...

and the eagle-eyed among you will have seen I made a mistake with Colin Gary's aircraft too, so there too, please try again (http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/5837-real-air-spitfire-ix-ma408-cg-no-322-wing/):

my painting time is rather limited lately, so it seems I have been cutting corners, I'll try better in the future.

Thanks Jankees for these great late-blooming skins. Honestly, how many other add-ons are this good at this age? My RealAir trio of the Spitfire, Scout and SF-260 must be about the best value aircraft I've ever bought - as good in P3D v3 today as they were in Vanilla FSX nearly (good grief!) nine years ago.

MK.XIVs are looking nice Jankees.

One small detail I notice that needs correcting is the position of the camera port on RM818.

It' needs to be lowered, as it's too high on the fuselage and should have a teardrop shroud as seen in the images below.

(I was going to suggest JKB might borrow your bump map for it!)

Here are a few more pictures of the high back FR.XIV fuselage camera doors.

I also found this excerpt from a model decal sheet which features RM818, although it's on the small side: -

The other thing if I might suggest, is to remove the 'rogue' battery access hatch on the rear starboard fuselage, as Jens Ole has done on his repaints.

Smashing work Jankees:encouragement:

If I may be so bold.. the teardrop fairing looks just a little on the large side.. especially on the LH side? Could be the viewing angle as the RH side one looks smaller in the screenie and I'll bet they're both the same size on the bump.

Love the repaints so far, thanks!

Would it be possible to do PS915 in her new silver colour scheme to represent Spitfire PS852. I know the actual aircraft is a Mk XIX but the Mk XIV could substitute well enough.

Real Air may have gone, but their models remain!
So one more paint for the Spitfire Mk XIV:
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww230/jcblom60/Spitfire/jk2178.jpg (http://s722.photobucket.com/user/jcblom60/media/Spitfire/jk2178.jpg.html)

Spitfire Mk.XIV RM656 DL-F, which was the aircraft that Captain Jean Maridor, of the Free French Air Force, was flying on the 3rd of August 1944, when he was killed while destroying a V1. Jean Maridor was born in Le Havre, France on the 24 November, 1920. He became interested in flying at a young age. He stopped his studies to focus of this new interest. Maridor began to take many courses in flying. He obtained his pilot's license at 16, making him the youngest pilot in France. In 1939, he joined the French Air Force and received his pilot's wings in September 1939, continuing his training on the Dewoitine D520. He joined a squadron just two days before the French Surrender, only to receive the order to burn his aircraft. After the French surrender, Maridor left to go to England with many other French pilots, where he joined the R.A.F. After training, he began flying with the 615 Squadron on Hurricanes. He scored his first kill on the 14th of October 1941. In February 1942, he transferred to 91 squadron, flying Spitfires, where he scored a further 8 kills, one of which was Lt Paul Galland, the brother of Adolf Galland, in October 1942.
From June 1944, 91 squadron flew the Spitfire Mk XIV and specialized in shooting down the V1's that the Germans started sending over to the UK. Capt Maridor was successful at this too, shooting down 6 of the Doodlebugs before his final flight on the 3rd of August 1944. On this day, Maridor intercepted a Doodlebug over Rolvenden around 12:33. Flying towards the bomb, he shot at it at 12:39. Although he hit it, the bomb was only damaged not destroyed. On his second attack, he saw the bomb was heading for Benenden School, which at the time was being used as a military hospital. Knowing that hundreds of lives would be lost if the bomb was to hit, Maridor launched a final attack at 12.43. He approached to less than 50 metres to ensure he would not miss a second time. The Doodlebug exploded this time, but the wing of his plane was caught in the explosion and ripped from the body. The plane crashed beside the lake on the school grounds, killing Maridor just 8 days before his wedding. His fiancée has been quoted as saying he would not have hesitated in his attack on the bomb. He knew that many lives would have been lost otherwise.
