View Full Version : Alphasim Voodoo goes native FSX

The Voodoo is another example of a classic cold war fighter jet which seems to be forgotten by the FSX developer community. My attempt to make the Virtavia Alphasim Freeware Collection FS2004 F-101 Voodoo "One-O-Wonder" usable in FSX is available at the Warbirds Library now, there are 2 files:

Part 1: F-101C and RF-101C with USAF paints by DaveQ and falcon409
Part 2: F-101B with CAF/USAF ANG paints by DaveQ

Wonderful, thanks you very much Henk, DaveQ and Falcon409. Although I buy many of the latest super productions I sometimes feel a little over awed and almost intimidated by their completeness and complexity. These enhanced for FSX products of what were, for their day, cutting edge offerings are ideal for me. I hope you are able to keep them coming.

Is there a chance for the SAAB Viggen/Draken for FSX? Great Models

Viggen is on my bucket list, I am not interested to convert the Alphasim Draken because the one which Thomas Nilsson from Bookmark Simulation (https://simulations.bookmark.se/)s made for FSX is much better.

WOW! My earliest memories of fighter jets were the CF-101's opening the show at the Abbotsford Airshow...loud and fast. Sparked a life long love of aviation.

Thank you you for you work in getting this native for FSX. I believe I had bought this airplane many years ago before it was freeware.

Fabulous! Any chance I'd be able to ask if there are placeholder specular textures in place? Is the alpha channel active? Im having an impossible time with making it active in the saber dog...im not very model savvy to begin with...this is one of those aircraft that truly was bare metal and would benefit from the texture enhancements! Looks great as a native.

The single seater bare metal paints have diffuse texture alphas + paint specific specular maps which also have alpha channels to enhance specularity. The MDL materials call the FSX stock FRESNEL_RAMP and GLOBALENV_AC_CHROME maps.
The 2 seater uses a set of generic specular maps in the common texture folder. You are an expert in this field so you should be able to find them.

DaveQ

I've noticed the metal paints come out quite dark; these files were set up for a port-over for DX9 and looked quite good (given they were done some years ago pre-Photoshop). A quick fix is to install a slightly lighter Fresnel ramp in the 'texture' file; alternatively, if you have it, I'm using John Terrell's out of his P-51D Little Friends pack. I'm in the process of lightening the base metal backgrounds and generally smartening things up a bit and will publish these when I can.

Hi All,
I'm a little confused by the panel designations. According to the RF-101C manual this is the correct panel but I don't see this rendition anywhere. This of course dates back to the original renditions which I believe were incorrect.

Jafo, you did a great job on these panel, No question!
But I think there was some confusion when Alpha did the original panels. At least, according to the manuals.

I just picked up the F-101C manual and here is that panel. So that looks to be correct when comparing to the original Alpha bitmap. Just trying to sort out the different panels for my own information.

Yep, that's the first one I posted above....again taken from a photo....;)
Alpha's originals were a bit awry ... but mainly I just wanted to stop the distortion/stretch in wide screen... and get a little closer to the correct gauge graphics/choices. Old panels didn't have anything 'digital' in them.....that didn't happen to around 1970...;)

mal998
December 2nd, 2015, 06:17
As I've said you did a fantastic job on all the updated panels. My questions really are really aimed at the original Alpha when deciding which panel was used in what plane.

I now have a full set of McDonnell manuals and I can tell you they had quite a few different panels depending on which model and block number.

It appears from the Canadian manual, the original Alpha bitmap on the "B" model was also correct. Thanks for you hard work on these.

Hello Henk, DaveQ, and all!

It's good to be back in the FS world - and this "nativised" Voodoo pack (esp the RF) is just delightful. I can't wait to add the new frensel, as the Polka Dots scheme is indeed a bit dark.

Thanks so much for these - I'm sure I've missed a few - I am aware of the F-8, and the Viggen - will comb the threads and see what else I've missed by way of Cold War iron.

cheers gents,

These updates are now done and available here and at Flightsim.com. The package is complete with new .mdl files having both spec and alpha active, and some revisions to the panels. Also a full inventory of 81st TFW paints including Robin Olds' 'Balls One', and three RF-101 camo birds. Again very many thanks to Henk, Jens-Ole and to Ed (Falcon409) for their contributions and to 000rick000 for metal inspiration!

Hello DaveQ.

I currently don't have your F-101 Voodoo installed in my FSX hanger, just yet.

I did download your latest updated release of the Voodoo (Voodoo_1-STR-FSX) pack. Before I install it. I'm currently looking for the F-106A Delta Dart sound pack mentioned in the readme doc., to use with it. Does anyone know where and what the sound pack file name is, to download it etc?.

In the meantime. I noticed there are two of your other/ previous FSX_Native_ PT1 and PT2 packs available for download. Do I need the Voodoo packs PT1 and PT2, since I just downloaded for install to my FSX, the package mentioned above?.

George,

This package updates Henk Schuitemaker's FSX Native Part 1; Part 2 is the F-101B, the 2-seaters. As to the F-106 sound, it is from the Alphasim/Virtavia F-106 if you have it.

No.

I don't have the Alphasim/Virtavia F-106. I'll have to go searching for other suitable sound packs to use in the Voodoo.

Being the FSX Native Part 1 and Part 2 is the F-101B, the 2-seaters. I assume I could add these two packs and add the most recent one, with out having any conflicts, having all three packs installed at the same time. I hope. I think for now. I'll install the most recent (Voodoo_1-STR-FSX) pack download that was released, and see how that goes etc.

Been working on putting bump maps on the Voodoo recently. They look ok though the stretching on the upper fuselage decking make them look a bit rubbish just there. The metal skins have been tweaked to ensure the airbrakes line up with the rear fuselage panels. Some work remaining on the RF and A/C around the canopy.

Also assigned the external tanks to 'external1' in the aircraft.cfg file so setting it to 0 in the FSX fuel menu removes them.
