Looks fantastic, always enjoy a Milviz Warbird.

I remember a post from someone at Milviz a while back (in fact, I'm pretty sure it was you, Rick, but can't say for certain) that eventually the F-86's model would be altered in a way to allow for shiny paints. Is something that is still planned? Thanks.

This looks awesome. I continue to dream of flying this bird.

However, if you are going to depict a factory new bird, or highly polished new bird, then perhaps you should back off the weathered burner cans just a little. See here for an actual picture.

Mach3DS
September 9th, 2015, 21:06
@ ejoiner...

It's still WIP...however I have already actually removed the engine weathering for the most part. trying to get the coloring right now. I have that photo as well as some others published via Boeing archive images. As far as the "divets" are concerned, I'm still playing round with the fresnel ramp which in this case is very much pronouncing the bump map. I can make it so that the skin looks completely flush but I'll need to adjust the diffuse alpha which is not a problem either...it all takes time and also experimentation ;) But the HUN is a beauty!

Out of curiosity...I believe those in the photos are F-100A or C? the D has a larger wing and refueling probe...not that that affects the texturing....it's a great photo. One th I ng I've noticed is that Many photos are hard to come by of this bord. This and the FJ4 Fury are probably the most elusive fighters to find good and varied photos of!

Lookin' good Rick! Don't forget 'U.S. AIR FORCE' and 'USAF' are Insignia Blue, not black:wavey:!!

PS You were right, they're F-100C's, some of the last built before production switched to the -D.

DagR
September 10th, 2015, 00:52
Also remember, don't go all out on the natural metal. Most F-100Ds were painted aluminium polyurethane on all but the aft section before getting camouflage. A medium grey diffuse colour combined with a specular map with rather fine noise should give it a metallic look.

Mach3DS
September 11th, 2015, 23:36
Ok, I've done custom bump maps for the fuselage, still need slight fixing but 99% done. Also a custom fresnel ramp. You can really see the difference between the first set of screenshots and this set. I've also refined the speculars and alphas more as well, to play nicely with the new bumps. Looks alot more like aircraft aluminum now IMO. Nice wide mouth bass in the last pic...hehe still working on the engine area...much harder that it looks to get right....

One little thing though: the rear of the fuselage seems to have a slightly different color. Is that due to the engine heat?

Yes it is due to engine heat. Also as the aircraft became more and more "broken in", that break between the forward fuselage and the engine portion became slightly less obvious. . .being even more evident when they went to SEA Camo and the heat would affect the paint in that area.

Mach3DS
September 19th, 2015, 08:48
@jankees, what falcon said! ;) he beat me to it...

@Warhorse, so just to clarify my role with MV...I've bwen a long time beta tester. I obviously have access to the paint kit, and I've been working on some skins for it. whether or not the Big Cheese decides to include them is up to him! As far as an actual update goes, Kat from MV frequents these threads. I don't generally comment on behalf of MV so as not to mistakenly infer expectations beyond what has been officially disclosed or what you can see from these screens. I always ask Colin prior to starting a thread regarding aircraft in beta for permission to post screens....and I should add again...it's all WIP. ;)

hae5904
September 19th, 2015, 11:44
It would be "stupid" of MV NOT to include them, they look great Rick, sure as basic scheme for a lot of repaints. :encouragement:
Hopefully you won't forget the exhaust?? ( just a minor observation.... )

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/attachment.php?attachmentid=29228&stc=1

Do you happen to know if MV will also include the later J57 exhausts, the surplus J57's of the F-102?

Exhaust petals is part of the 1% ;) Very easy fix. Thanks Hank. These are left over from completely redoing the alpha to play nice with the bump maps. Although it will be used with the Tbird scheme I'm doing...that's been posted over in the P3D forum a while back.

A late Danish would require the F-102 nozzles. They were fitted in 1978-79 along with RWR on the wing tips and removal of the wing fences. A Martin Baker Mk.5 seat was also installed. For an early one in natural metal or Aluminium Polyurethane finish, the model is spot on.

The early F-100s had a pitch control problem at high angles of attack, which could lead to a problem that was later referred to as the "sabre dance." A simulation with this flight-dynamics characteristic would be "interesting.":icon_eek:

From what I have seen in the MILVIZ mix over the years- Colin is an insufferable pr..., or something.
I might not want to have a pint with him, but his products that I own have been at or above expectation.
I have found Kat to be more than helpful with the few issues that I have had.
I suspect we would all be better off to step away and let the incubation process continue.

I'm sure many of those will be in the release. . .or at least some will be. The Super Saber had a long heritage and too many liveries to count so I'm sure if something you wish isn't initially included it will be done eventually.

From what I have seen in the MILVIZ mix over the years- Colin is an insufferable pr..., or something.
I might not want to have a pint with him, but his products that I own have been at or above expectation.

He's actually a really cool guy, and very generous. I spent some time with Colin and Diego at the USAF museum at Warner Robins AFB doing research on 3 planes that Milviz is building models of, and I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with those guys...oh, and we hoisted a few pints, too :) Also, I've been on the Beta team for 5 years, and he's a good boss man. However, if you steal his models, all bets are off.

Agreed. I've been on the beta team since 2012, and I finally actually talked to him over skype the other night. Very cool guy. We've got to remember that forums and facebook are terrible ways to communicate non-linear ideas. It's tough. body language voice inflection, all lost. He's a super nice guy in RL.

Because I'm a Sabre's FAN....wrong Sabre's.

Because this is such a great looking airplane and going to be another fine Milviz reproduction, I offer some additional information about the "Sabre Dance" in the following link - http://www.sabredance.net/whathappened.htm . An interesting read!

That is a good insight, the mention of the footage getting used in Hollywood, I recall the movie but cannot remember the name of it ... "a Sabre FAN" one thing I love about the MILVIZ F-86 is its flying feel in the cockpit , but to read about the incident and the man caught in it really gives it some, us, a memory knowing a little more on what happened .

That is a good insight ... "a Sabre FAN" ...

Sorry for the ambiguity. The first line was sort of a "play on words" or a pun. In addition to being a fan of aviation, I am a fan of hockey. For reasons relating to my misspent youth I am a fan of the Buffalo Sabres.

The page I linked to also contains other links that contain related information; such as how Hollywood used the video of the Lt. Brooks accident in several films. The one you are thinking about is "The Hunters".

All in all, I'm really looking forward to the Milviz Super Sabre and will try to get aileron reversal in ground effect during my first couple hours.

So that footage is of the C model. The -D has a larger wing/wing area. Aileron coupling was obviously still an issue, but I think it was more so in the earlier models. Although high alpha, and slow are still bad regime to be in.

I'm just gonna throw this out there again. I know these are all WIP shots. . .I know weathering is an art in and of itself, something I don't even bother with because I'm not good at it. You guys are very good at it and that's great but in all the years I worked on F-100's stateside and overseas (including a short stint in Nam) I never saw airplanes that were "that" dirty. Just food for thought and everyone has their own preferences. . .JS.

Hi,

Though we certainly do not wish to contradict you in any way, we do have proof that the aircraft did, actually, get quite dirty "in situ".

However, it's important to note that right now, the amount of contrast is quite high and that will lower the amount of "dark" areas when we fix it. As well, of course, Colin is a big fan of dirt and so, that's what we do.

We do hope that you, all of the potential clients, will love our rendition.

Thank you

Hello,
So see this, more dirty and with leftover of paints. Some like it some not.
It's a model for sure, and the weathering's idea is to fool a little the eye also (weathering it isnt only dirties but shadowing, fading, scratches ect). You know this, You are the painter too. : >

... BUT for those who don't like a lot of dirt and shadowing, scratches ect. MV model will bring also "Fresh factory" repaint + paint kit (doubtless). Do You like more clean aircraft? Perhaps this "skin" will be for You:

There's a great difference between weathering and dirt.
My first tour in SEA was almost at the end of the 'Hun's' operational stint and the few I had the good luck to get a look at were worn but never neglected.
If you feel the need for some weathered subjects that is fine but strike a balance between clean aircraft and operational wear and tear, crew chiefs were fussy about their charges and never allowed them to become dirty.
I'll use the appearance of our 'Tracks' in RL and the plastic modelling fraternity's efforts as a comparison.
For example, my Troop (indeed, the entire Squadron) kept most of our kit stowed ins the hull, with a few items in the limited space provided by the external bins.
When the 'Koalas' (Centurions) finally arrived they followed the same routine.
Reason: Dense scrub and Bamboo thickets just removed anything stowed outside a bin!
Of course, most 'Armour Modellers' follow the 'Francois Verlinden' rule book and hang anything and everything off their 'shake 'n bake' assembled efforts ........... I'll get 'orf me soapbox now!

Pretty much what I have seen, not only with the F-100 but right up to the last ones I worked on. . .the F-16's. Crew Chiefs "are" very fussy about their airplanes as a rule and pride themselves on maintaining not only an operationally safe aircraft system-wise but also a "Clean Steed" and use every spare moment going over the aircraft to keep it looking as good as possible given it's age. I won't be purchasing this airplane, but I'd still like to see that those who do have a choice at least and it sounds like they will.

There's also heat related injuries to the paint, especially on F-86 and F-100 aircraft that have been run more than a few combat hours... :redfire:

With each aircraft MV is pushing boundnaries. IMHO this will be one of the finest aircraft packages to be released for FS. I just tested a revised FDE with refined envelope characteristics. I wont talk about what is included but i and another tester were very impressed. Study. Find a manual online and read it. I cant really say much more because of NDA and i dont speak officially for MV, nor would i want to. It's Colin's company and Kat will give you the low down at some point. If you like the phantom you'll like the HUN. Theres so much that goes on behind the scenes that i wish you could be privvy to. MV really does strive for excellence. So many times were so close and Colin will say we have to get it precise as we can. The other guys who are devs are so talented and take all our sometimes repetitive bugs and feature issues and really come through with geound breaking solutions. So while i Haven't really said anything about the HUN I hope you can appreciate the dedication they have to this niche craft. MV is craftsman quality mixed with engineering precision.

This is why I am happy to give milviz my money any day of the week. They are like you say truly pushing boundaries and wont release until perfect, unlike other payware developers who will release with basic gauges not even functioning correctly. Falcon you are so right about the crew chiefs, they maintained their aircraft to the best of their ability and guarded them jealously. My experience was with F-4Cs at Luke AFB but we had one crew chief, a SSgt, who, when everything had been done on his bird to bring it to its highest state of readiness, actually found a rag and some hydraulic fluid and went over the entire bottom of the aircraft, to include the drop tanks, with that rag soaked with fluid. He put a fine sheen on the bottom of the entire bird, over that white paint; when his aircraft returned from wherever it was taken by its crew, it stood out from all its mates in the air as it entered the break over the runway and displayed that glistening underside. These guys were as much consummate professionals as the aircrew were.

BTW one of them, a TSgt who had cut his teeth on F-86s, told me a good place to sneak into for a quick nap was the F-100's intake.

Ellsworth AFB, late 1950's, my mother and I witnessed the T-Birds in F100s. My ears still hurt from the low passes over the crowd. I think we actually ducked. At the end of the show the jets pulled right up to us and the ground crew folded up that nose antenna. No photos, only fond memories.

No offense meant to the Air Guard repaints that are currently shown as a part of the initial release but... I'd like to offer up my thoughts for representative Guard units that flew the "Hun" as a part of the Vietnam conflict and served their country respectably, and with Honor.

1968, in the wake of the "U.S.S. Pueblo Incident," Six Air Force Air National Guard units were "Federalized" and ordered onto Active-Duty. 2 went to South Korea, and the other 4 units ended up being deployed to Vietnam for year long tours as part of the build up after the "Tet Offensive." The first Guard unit to arrive in Southeast Asia was the 120th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the Colorado Air National Guard. (Cougars) Soon followed by the 136th TFS, New York Air Guard, (Fuzzy) the 174th TFS of the Iowa Air National Guard, (The Bats) and the 188th TFS of the New Mexico ANG. (The Enchilada Air Force). These units flew a total 24,124 Combat Sorties and accumulated 38,614 hours of combat flying. 6 Guard Pilots were Killed in Action (1-CO, 1-IA, 3-NM, 1-NY) and 8 Guard Pilots volunteered for the "Misty" Fast-FAC program. The Guard squadrons outperformed their active duty counterparts in every Wing they were attached to. Their professionalism set the bar high and showed that "Weekend Warriors" could maintain the same standards as active duty squadrons. They paved the way for how you see todays Air Guard units deployed to augment Active duty forces in combat currently. Would be great to seeColorado, Iowa, New York and New Mexico Air Guard honored with repaints of this most anticipated addition to the FS world! The Super Sabre may be viewed historically as our "First" Supersonic Fighter. But it's combat record as a Close Air Support Fighter in Vietnam is its lasting Legacy.

Note: There were also members of the other two squadrons, the 119th TFS, New Jersey, and the 121st TFS Washington D.C. ANG, that became a part of a composite Squadron that served at Phu Cat TDY after they finished their primary call-up mission.

Same here. They really do produce excellent models of some of my all time favourite aircraft.

I always loved the shape of the Phantom, and it was the first jet I saw flying at my first airshow, so I was really excited when that was released.

Now if they would just do an F-117 (waits for the jeers ) and F-111 ( I already have four payware and many more freeware F-111s, but I would still buy a Milviz version).
