Hi all,

today I want to let you know that RAF Gutersloh has been restarted for FSX - SLOWLY - Due to my spare time (with the Hides for FS2004 still in the works)....

First impressions of the 3.Sqn area at RAF Gutersloh_X, not quiet impressive so far, but a beginning...

Very impressive to me, for a WIP! I look forward to it's release as I just mentioned in the pictures thread about getting my FSX finally up and running. I want to populate it now with much nicer renditions of military fields around the world. Thank you for showcasing what you currently have.

Thank you, guys. Simultaneously, I am working on the Harrier Hides.

Here the WIP at the Senne Range. Meanwhile, I felt in love with the Wilco Harrier. It fits well into the sceneries and it's flyable (and landable!) like a charm after I exchanged its airfile from the RazbamAV8B. Some changes to the gear behaviour and contact points now let it move like the real ones.... The shots show the new trees textures and finer model structures compared with the FS9 version... (which is still in progress - believe me....)

I fully agree. One detail: will there be 'real' grass textures at some locations? When coming in vertically with a Harrier it may facilitate the estimation of height.

If you mean 3D grass like in the upcoming FS9 version than it's planned...

Insanely beautiful, Manfred!

In the interim, and as I posted in the FS2004 section - on your existing FS2004 release, which bgl contains the trees? They give that standard portover texture problem, and if they can be removed easily, that would make the 2004 version perfectly useable in FSX until this one's ready.

Sorry for the slight off topic - again, lovely work, and looking forward to this.

Truly great. I love the trees, which are not the same in a row. But you could do some more bushes or lower trees inside. I know, they are WIP pictures, perhaps something like that is on your todo-list. Modelling of the sheltered parts are well done. Perhaps it is worth to rework the green/grey roof texture parts of shelter houses a bit.

Thank you all - yes, several objects have to be added indeed. Currently, I am doing lots of experiments with the ground polygons. Using my new technique as already done at the Harrier Hides, there is well progress in the meantime.

http://cloud.directupload.net/plugins/imageviewer/site/direct.php?s=1EqI (http://cloud.directupload.net/1EqI)

In marked contrast to common airfield grounds which are mostly made in one big piece each layer, I used small pieces in patchy alignments. That way, you get a natural ground with no repeated surfaces...

http://cloud.directupload.net/plugins/imageviewer/site/direct.php?s=1EqJ (http://cloud.directupload.net/1EqJ)

According to the real ground, I can add tracks (infield), shadows (where trees are) or dirt... Okay, that's what I am working on :dizzy:

Even from a high altitude, you can see the different patterns of the infield....

http://cloud.directupload.net/plugins/imageviewer/site/direct.php?s=1EqK (http://cloud.directupload.net/1EqK)

Hopefully, next time I can show shots from the revised concrete surfaces...

Thank you. Today I did some improvements, and I can't help it - playing around with some options inside the paint programme, it looks much better now...

Here the infield area again, close up to show the details of the grass now...

http://cloud.directupload.net/plugins/imageviewer/site/direct.php?s=Otu (http://cloud.directupload.net/Otu)

I also worked on the wild grass area, between taxiways and the shelters. Here you find more burned grass and sandy spots.

http://cloud.directupload.net/plugins/imageviewer/site/direct.php?s=Otv (http://cloud.directupload.net/Otv)

Here is a comparison shot to show the difference between trimmed infield, wild grass area and to the left the photoreal area, that will not be longer needed if progress is going on that way...

http://cloud.directupload.net/plugins/imageviewer/site/direct.php?s=Ott (http://cloud.directupload.net/Ott)

I cross my fingers to get same nice results when adding tree shadows or mud on top....

For the specialists among yourselves: Yes, the runway isn't finished yet. It also will get some more surfaces and edge textures :very_drunk:

Looks really superb! I'm eagerly awaiting the release!

Just my opinion on the cracked runway texture. Quite sure you would not find a cracked runway on an important frontline base (if you are modelling the base as when it was active). The FOD danger is just to big and in my experience runways with the slightest sign of cracking are resurfaced. Just my opinion :-)

Manschy
December 6th, 2015, 04:19
Thank you all for your kind answers. Yes, Jens Ole. You are very right. These textures are just WIP and of course, regarding FOD, there could be some bad accidents at Gutersloh! These cracks aren't quite real so far, I will do some work on it :running:

Haha, that's a great suggestion :applause:
No, seriously: It will take a lot of time to get everything nicely to work. Most ambitious projects are done by pupils or tretirees with more time. But currently I am shift working, so there is a small timeframe to realize all my ideas for this scenery.
Indeed there are many objects and models been carried over from the RAF Gutersloh FS2004 version, but also a lot of new parts to rework (all trees, ground polygons) and I have to learn(ed) a lot about tweaking behaviour in FSX. This will take some time.

Okay, guys, today I want to show you the progress regarding the ground polygons. As is well known, I (want) (have to) replace the photo ground because of current existing regulations in Germany.
First of all, here are some shots that show the appearance and behaviour of the different grass polygon layers. Now you get a better and more blurred surface from higher distance but at the same time a more real surface on the ground.

I wholly concur with the other posters, and I am keenly looking forward to flying my Lightning and Harrier from this airbase. But I have one small comment. The transition between asphalt/concrete and grass is rather abrupt. In reality the grass, because the tips of the blades are usually higher than the concrete, ‘overlaps’ a bit. It is a tiny thing, but perhaps it can be addressed?<o:p></o:p>

Hi Manschy - any news on the FSX/P3D update on this awesomeness?

Okay, it's been a while again since I posted last screenshots - meanwhile, I changed from FSX to P3Dv4.2 and there's been a lot of new stuff to learn. I decided you to not annoy with any minor boring details here and there, but in the meantime, there are some few but interesting improvements. So from today, I will share again these steps with the community. All shots taken from P3Dv4.2, but FSX will for sure be concidered as well.
I have to add, there is really spare time in my life and I would like to request please to not ask for any release dates. I know about the long period of this scenery's development but you can see, it's not dead.

This "new era" I want to start with some overview shots showing how ETUO is fitting into the surrounding area. And how the new ground polygon technique works to imitate photoreal ground without using real photographs. Due to german law, this style was quite easier to work with without any government restrictions or payments.... Some detailed shots will follow shortly, but in no particular order.....so enjoy!

Wow Manfred!!!
that is one beautifull looking scenery. Hope you switching to P3D doesn't mean this won't work in FSX.
Thanks for your effort put in this.:applause:

Yes, of course - FSX will be in development as well. I add this in the starter post now.
Except for some few things that won't work in FSX (for example trees shadows) everything is added in FSX first, then tested in P3Dv4. That way, I am halfway sure everything is working fine in both sims. I have to test SODE scripts though...

Very nice work and I do like a lot you GP approach. I also appreciate how much additional work that is for you though, as GPs have to cover all of the areas and not just the paved ones. Excellent work.:applause:

Don't mean to pour petrol on a smoldering fire, but if you haven't experienced Manfred's "Gutersloh" in Fs9, you probably aren't able to appreciate how immersive this base and flight activity is.

First, it's based on VTOL jet aircraft, the Harrier. They are deployed from the airbase itself and also from remote, temporary "Harrier hides" tucked away in forested areas. There is AI and user controlled Harrier flight activity from the base and and the hides. Also present is a fleet of CH-47 Chinooks that you can accompany on flight sorties. The hardest part to describe is the airbase scenery detail, which, even in fs9, is incredible and vast. Remember that there is the base itself and several "hides" that are a number of miles removed from the base.

As I mentioned, there may be challenges to fully appreciating this scenery. First, you probably will want a Harrier that is equal in detail to the quality of this environment. In Fs9, I noticed that some add-on aircraft were modelled in a scale that was somewhat larger than AI aircraft in the scenery. Second, I found that another way to enjoy Manfred's amazing artistry was to have a driveable vehicle to explore all of the eye candy such as hangers, roadways, parking areas, and buildings on the base. The best I found was Hama's Unimog trucks. For some reason those are not quite as immpressive in FSX as they were in Fs9. The sound and vehicle interior files did not convert well.

All I can say is that I hope Manfred and his collaborators are willing and able to complete the conversion of RAF Gutersloh to FSX. If you like military flight simulation, this immersive cold-war scenery shows what can be done. The fact that it is freeware (historically) puts it in a class, literally, by itself.
