View Full Version : Looking for forest fire effect

I've been toying with the idea of trying to create some fire fighting missions. I've seen so many other posts where people talk about it and nothing ever comes out of it. I'm pretty busy right now so this may end up the same way, but I may give it a try anyway.

There is a forest fire effect mentioned in this thread (http://www.hovercontrol.com/cgi-bin/ib3/ikonboard.cgi?;act=Print;f=1;t=18471). I've seen other images of what I believe to the be the same effect show up in a google search and it looks very good (see attachment). It says it is available on wildfirepilots.com, but that website is gone.

It may also also used in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZH815BtCo4

Does anyone know where else I can find this forest fire effect?

I was tinkering with the effects that ship with FSX to try to achieve something similar, but it could take a while.

Just Flight have a demo mission from their Rescue Pilot pack which includes a forest fire. I don't know whether the effect could be extracted, but it might be worth a look:

Thanks. Looking at the video and screenshots, it looks like they are just using the stock FSX effects. The actual fire and smoke column effects aren't bad. What I really like from the effect in my OP is the big hazy smoke cloud you get above and extending beyond the immediate vicinity of the fire. FSX has one that I've tweak a little, but it's still not as convincing as the one in my OP.

There is a forest fire effect in the Effects folder. Here's shot using FSEditor. Bob.

Thanks. But again, the image in my OP appears to be something more than what ships with FSX. I've played with the FSX effects and the fire and smoke columns are decent. The large hazy smoke cloud could use some work, though.

Wonder if there might be some ideas here:

Found this one awhile ago, loads real world fires, guessing it uses default effects though:

Hope you can do cfs 2 where the smoke effects and fire ones are there already.

is the website I think, downloads may or may not work.

Hover conntrol also mentions this old site,

and states
and look for "Origon Ablaze" it will be under · FSX Missions (Any Version Can Run)

hope this helps?

I made the fire that's in that video using effects from FSX. It's just the fire added to a few spots then the smoke layer above. It would be great to have a better effect with a line of fire or something

OK. Thanks Tankerguy. I'll keep playing around with the FSX effects to see if I can get something I like.

Flight simulator, Train simulator, Ship simulator, Bus simulator, Metro simulator, Tank simulator, Submarine simulator, Race simulator, Sports simulator, Farm simulator, Fishing simulator, Building bridges simulator, Road construction simulator, Demolish simulator, Goat simulator, Grass simulator, What not simulator....

Aerial Fire Fighting simulator ??.... Forget it, ladies, no way....

Why ??.... What's so difficult about it ?.... Set up a fire simulation somewhere, find it and drop retardant on it along the correct path and from the correct altitude, until it kills the fire and then score points. Should be fun, shouldn't it. Add an option to scoop water from a nearby lake for water bombers like Catalina, Martin Mars or CL-415 and the fire fighting sky is the limit. Yeah right, not in this day and age, it isn't....

A plethora of air fighting sims where you shoot down well respected colleagues have always been around since the word simulator became common good but it seems that no developer in his right state of mind has ever thought of setting up a sim where you can fight an honest fire from the skies. And what's the use of these great looking fire renditions in FSX when there seems to be no way to delete them thru an 'adventure' script ? I mean, is there anything more useless and pitiful than dropping tons of retardant on a fire while it happily burns on and on ?

Will the real FSX adventure programmer/coder please stand up and finally create the blatantly missing all singing and dancing aerial fire fighting simulation we're all waiting for for so long ! Please, Pretty Please ! We're willing to pay, won't we, boys ! ( there's something like that from RDJ Simulation called 'FSX Aerial Firefighter' . Sounds great! But i'll bet my bottom euro that, as always, lots of fiercesome fires around but non will be really extinguished. Anybody has it ? Anybody correct me if i'm wrong ?....)

In the meantime i'll keep watching 'Always' and dream on... (in a fishing boat)

Well, that's kind of what I'm hoping to achieve. I'm not sure what the "trigger" capabilities are in FSX/P3D missions, but I'd like to get mission success or failure depending on how close you get the retardant/water to the desired drop location. And, again, depending on the ability to use triggers in missions, maybe have the fire effect change to the smoldering smoke effect if you achieve the goals. Sim Director is also supposed to have the ability to use recorded flights as AI in missions, so you could have to follow the spotter to hit difficult drops. Or something like that.

Actually, here are the notes I have for mission ideas:

OV-10
- First on scene – start at the airport with some general directions to get to reported fire within allotted time (x miles to the west, follow HWY XX, etc…). Look for any persons/property in immediate danger (ie – mission requirement to fly within x meters of location of fire). Circle on station to observe tanker activity (could be fun just to watch AI tankers drop, if I can get that to work). RTB. (vary location and conditions to provide various levels of difficulty)

S-2T
- Formation and drop – start at airport and follow AI OV-10 in loose formation to fire. Orbit while OV-10 makes an assessment pass, then drop on fire (mission requirement to activate smoke within X meters of fire location). Follow rejoin with OV-10 and RTB. (vary location and conditions to provide various levels of difficulty)

S-2T/P-3A
- Rendezvous – start at the airport with some general directions to get to reported fire within allotted time (x miles to the west, follow HWY XX, etc…). Find circling OV-10 when on scene (hopefully can have OV-10 AI triggered when within X distance of fire). Follow OV-10 and drop where he marks with smoke. Form up and RTB. (vary location and conditions to provide various levels of difficulty)

In the meantime, I'm experimenting with convincing looking wild fires

That sounds great! I hope you can get something like this going! I was on the North Fire yesterday where many vehicles became stuck on the 15 freeway in a large burnover. People had to abandon their cars and leave on foot. Many vehicles caught fire along with semi trucks.

Not familiar with the flour bag drop mission at all, but as you're supposed to hit a target with a flour bag, it should also register successful hits.

Make the target a fire, make the flour bomb retardant and make the fire disappear after a successful hit or at least turn it into a wet, smoking mess.

I don't know if this is possible at all within FSX' mission framework, but a party that is more enthusiastic about the idea of firefightsing missions will surely figure it out.
A good place to start is this one:
