Here's the Vertigo N2S at Duxford.... love sunlight on silk and dope! I've always had a thing for 2 wings, and after installing Orbx Monument Valley... I am hankering for something new...
Yes, it ought to look great.... but it NEEDS to transmit the feel of flight as well.... I want to remember that push forward to raise the tail with the corresponding pedal press thereafter. Also, I want to remember watching the sides of the runway whilst pulling the stick into the pit of my stomach, to time the chirp with the burble.... or to push slightly forward to pin the wheels whilst kicking in some rudder.

So far Alabeo's Waco seems to have my nod... but am I missing something that I ought to buy instead? I know there are several good ones- but which one is YOUR FAVORITE- PERIOD! It must work in P3D v2.5....

I really appreciate the pointers.... should anyone want to add any other details of what helps one Bipe stand out from the other... I'd be most interested.

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?93754-My-favourite-biplane

that was a good thread - full of great biplane porn

...I knew we had just discussed this - like a lost sticky it just disappeared lol

If I had my way....there would be a stickie thread list of all Biplanes - from freeware to payware in order of historical (R/L) development - start with the pre WWI on up to present day
Another stickie of all warbirds also in chronological order (is there a P-47 for FSX?..why, yes - there are 10 of them and they are these...)
Another of all GA - subsets of bush, single engine, multi-engine, prop and jet
Another of all tubeliners
Another of all Helicopters - subsets of Mil, Civie, Sling load capable etc..
And of course - one for all Naval Mil. aircraft and ships...burp*
And finally - one that lists all freeware and payware scenery and mesh - subsets of country, airports, regions, etc..

Excellent- exactly the sort of information I was soliciting... Ta!

While I usual drone along in the FLs, installing all the Orbx stuff has resulted in a an itch to see things framed by two wing at 1000 agl... Something I have discovered I have to scratch;).

BTW- I realized I had purchased Just Flight's Moth during a sale some months/years ago.... How does it stack up? Which one- JF or the freeware Ant's? After all, THIS SITE has opened my eyes to some true freeware gems....

Loving the difference in Flight Sim... but is there any tweak for the Waco... rudder seems a bit too effective, almost no need to use, except on the ground... It's a LOVELY model.... I would hope someone smarter than I has tweaked... any tips?

Not as far as I know, though in my opinion there should have been. I can't believe that the instrumentation on the original was as sparse as in the Vertigo version.

I flew the Alabeo YMF5 to St. Bart's from St. Maarten.... 1000 feet, in and around passing rain squalls, during the early sunset. Totally captivating, so much so that I had to fly back... With lengthening shadows and the special extra darkness reserved for the moments before the sun finally disappears.... We flew a carrier approach to slip in over the fence.... I love this plane! The only consistent negative is the ultra light to almost non-existent rudder input in flight. How can I fix this? Is there a known modification? Can I edit the .cfg to reduce effectiveness of the vertical fin and increase adverse yaw? This aeroplane is too good not to perfect!

Brilliant stuff- there are some real gems here!

I am fairly smitten with the Alabeo Waco at the moment, and can't stop island hopping here all around St. Marten. That said, the rudder issue continues to bother me. Is there a chance of contacting someone who would be able to tweak the .air / .cfg files for me? Is it legal to do so? I do not plan on doing anything with the result to earn a single Dollar- rather, I would be most willing to compensate some talented individual who might fancy a small project.

This Bipe is pretty wonderful, and but for this glaring characteristic, would be almost perfect for what I want to do- which is poke around Orbx land at 1000' or less, whilst giving my "virtual" goggles a wipe down every now and then ;).

Any pointers.... is http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/forums/flight-dynamics.65/page-2 or http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/forums/project-recruiting.108/ a place to start, or is there someone here that could assist? Perhaps someone has already done a replacement FDE for the Waco.... any thoughts... please?

While I do not have any time in a Waco, I do have a considerable amount of Taildragger time. My feet have never been able to fall asleep, as they can in the Alabeo Waco. I appreciate your thoughts, however, I would still like to explore the option of improving the .air file.

In the aircraft.cfg is a section that allows you to make modifications. Back up your original cfg first.

[flight_tuning]
cruise_lift_scalar = 1.0
parasite_drag_scalar = 1.0
induced_drag_scalar = 1.5
elevator_effectiveness = 1.0
aileron_effectiveness = 1.0
rudder_effectiveness = 1.0
pitch_stability = 1.0
roll_stability = 1.0
yaw_stability = 1.0
elevator_trim_effectiveness = 1.0
aileron_trim_effectiveness = 1.0
rudder_trim_effectiveness = 1.0
p_factor_on_yaw = 0.5
torque_on_roll = 0.5
hi_alpha_on_roll = 0.5
hi_alpha_on_yaw = 0.5
gyro_precession_on_yaw = 0.5
gyro_precession_on_pitch = 0.5

Try making rudder effectiveness = 0.5 and see if this suits you better.

What a brilliant and SIMPLE SOLUTION! I changed, as suggested to 0.5 and doing some circuits and bumps- found me feet had to waken from their usual slumber in the Waco- fantastic- ta! I'm curious, did you experiment and settle on 0.5 as the best value in the Waco or was it just a suggestion.... it seems great tbh.

Yes, I am too used to using my feet to leave it as is is.... an old taildragger pilot from way back ;).

I am still experimenting, thinking about going down to 0.4.... will keep you abreast of happenings....perhaps tweaking the "yaw" values will also assist in capturing the moment I want to...

Can't believe I'm the only person experiencing this issue with the Alabeo Waco.... but at least your post has me moving in the right direction.

There aren't enough good quality biplanes in FSX. I've flown a number in RL, and most of the addons for our sim just aren't really up to snuff.

Don't like the Alabeo Waco. Don't really like any of the Alabeo planes for flight characteristics.

Ant's Tiger Moth is a good plane. GAS Ryan PT-22 is actually a very nice open cockpit bird, although not a biplane of course. I don't think it works in P3D, but Sibwings Pitts is probably the best biplane made for FSX. A real jewel.

I can't believe I forgot the SIbwings AN-2. Absolutely the best biplane out there, and one of the best planes period. Wonderfully and realisitically modeled! A dream to fly.

So, having flown the GAS PT-22 a fair bit lately, I'd like to get another one of their planes. The Ryan is nicely modeled, both visually and in terms of flight dynamics. Which of the GAS planes are the best? I do require 3D gauges and nice graphics, but realistic flight characteristics are the top priority. As a real world pilot, I have no patience for the usual "close enough" flight dynamics of many FSX addons. A2A, Sibwings, and RealAir have spoiled me. That's why I don't fly the Alabeo birds I've bought, and rarely fly Carenado anymore.

GAS suggestions?

I have two issues with it, however. The sound cone seems to be knackered. I turn my head about 90 degrees (using TrackIR) and I hear the engine nicely, any other direction and it's basically inaudible. Is there a fix for this that anyone knows about.

EDIT: I dug around in the sound.cfg and saw that the Jenny prop files called for weren't present in the folder, so I grabbed them from the Jenny, added them to the folder and took her up again. All is well.

And was the rudder on the actual aircraft as ineffective as it is in this model? Sheeesh! It will slip, but not very effectively, since the rudder is so ineffective in the air and on the ground. I could probably accomplish the same yaw by just sticking my arm out the side! There doesn't seem to be enough rudder to keep it coordinated in turns.

And when you like classic fighters, the Heinkel He51 by Classics Wings is a must. Like the Camel it is freeware so the price can't be a problem.

My taste in Biplanes was forever changed doing the Turbine Toucan (http://www.turbinetoucan.com/homepage/ ), as the link to the Aircrafts website will show this is by far the hottest ride on two wings , due in large part by having a turboprop engine that generates more thrust that the plane weighs. This allows for some crazy manouvers like hovering on the prop and a take off run about as short as a helo.

The Infinity Entertainment group were part of the development and its pilot kind enough to assist in the FDE , Kevin Miller did the mesh and I did a number of racing skins to use in some competitions for air racing with a few friends and a trailer for hospitality was part of the package , i believe its still available , there was a link on the Toucan website, i dont think the skins pack was released so only the original yellow paint would be available as per the agreement with Infinity , i could upload them by now i suppose being so many years have passed since its release.

@Chuck-
Wandering through the web in search of biplanes I came across this and it looked interesting, but very untraditional. For those interested, it would appear the have some sort of discount at the END of each month...

This is turning into a great post with lots of bipe info.... Perfect!

Best- C

PS- SO FAR I have to say the An-2 takes the cake....

I vote for this as a biplane that takes an awful lot of practice to fly. And I mean just fly, never mind doing 3D aerobatics! Probably one of the harder aircraft to land that I have ever tried in FSX.

I forgot about those videos, nice work they were, after a time you can put the toucan down in a parking space , using reverse thrust to stop the ground roll , like any other power change in this .. Very Gently, interestingly the release fde capped the top speed , at the time its top end was unknown as it had never been above 75% throttle, there is another FDE that didnt cap it and the plane would do over 300 knots , its a handfull with that one.

Seeing the excellent range of suggestions on this thread reminds me of another great bipe that seems not to have been mentioned here yet - Dave Molyneaux's De Havilland DH-89 Dragon Rapide. Can even be had equipped with floats and a Queen Charlotte Airlines paint-job, perfect for PNW flights around Vancouver Island and the BC coast.

I think you will find that Dave Moly's aircraft is the DH 84 Dragon.
You will have to wait a little longer for his new Avro Avian, & a bit longer still for my DH 90 Dragonfly I'm afraid!

That would be Dave Garwood's model and it gets a lot of air time with me.:applause:

Any chance that we can include links when suggesting possibilities? I shan't be able to fly until next week... But want to grab some of these as soon as I'm back at my Sim....

Ta- this has evolved exactly as I had hoped... Some true gems here!

Sorry, wrong Dave! Thanks Roger, yes I meant to say Dave Garwood's Rapide.

And here's where to get it (make sure you get the fsx v4. Floatplane is a seperate file)

have you looked at Sibwings website - they host a myriad of repaints

also OZX - thats one of the best places to find repaints for any aircraft / helo

I love the AN-2 cockpit - especially in a thunderstorm with the environment audio full on and the subwoofer rumbling on the thunder

This is quite a wonderful simulation, and SO VERY DIFFERENT from anything else in the flight sim arena.

Been flying the Antonov An-2 Colt the past few days. What a super airplane! Sibwings did an incredible job on it. Just so fun in so many ways, although it's not a plop in and go sort of addon. Still, the startup procedure is pretty simple and quick to learn and operate.
