View Full Version : HMS Bounty Project 17th century Harbour scenery - FS9/FSX

nigel richards
May 18th, 2015, 09:58
Gentlemen, this is still 'in the hand' - a few items and ground polys yet to be finalised.

The scenery is a small 17th century Harbour and shipyard situated on the North Wales coast.

However, as we're producing the scenery as 5 or 6 Gmax modules, the bgl files will be easily placeable via any scenery placer at locations of your own choice.

It provides all airport/port facilities - all scenery objects/items custom built, including port houses/buildings, working lighthouse, Admiralty buildings, shipbuilding yard and other goodies.

Just a small preview...

I just had a flashback to my favorite Disney movie of all time, "Kidnapped". I expected to see David Balfour and the captain of the "Covenanter" walking along the harbor frontage. I don't remember the D18 from the movie, though.

PS: Wouldn't happen to have a one legged cook and a cabin boy named Jim Hawkins aboard, would you?

Thanks for the warm encouragement - happy this will be of some interest/use, Gentlemen.

Adding more details and items - ground polys and terrain adjustments to come.

Lighthouse now happily working in both sims - Milton's awesome flag animation added to Admiralty building.
Will probably add the flag at the harbour front, too.

LOL. Then we'll have ingenious folk inventing ways of adding aircraft to a ship sim.
Seriously; Milton's Bounty project has positively widened the frontiers of thought regarding what can be possible for FS.

NCGent's Naval vessels are awesome contributions towards making our seas realistic.

Yep, this is going to be a must have. Merc Air is needing a new hide out as the old one (CFS1 scenery) near Southend was troublesome in FS9 and I'm not counting on it's working in FSX at all.

Nigel, if you need someone to test it in FSX Steam Edition, let me know. :applause:

Hi Chris, thanks for the interest - yep, making progress.
I've had a setbeck with a fried Desk top video card, hence slow progress at present with this and other projects.

For the moment trying to push ahead with a laptop that's not really up to the job.
That's life, I'm afraid - hopefully be able to replace graphics card soon.

Hope you find the following pics of interest :-)

Willy, I'd be highly honoured to have your input in FSX Steam Ed.
I'm currently working this up for both sims, so be most happy to have you aboard, Sir :-)

This scenery's in North Wales, but if you find it of suitability for Merc Air, will gladly add a slipway for water/airstrip accessibility - nice grass strip maybe?

Several screenies to show how things are shaping up;

There were just too many houses etc and not enough focal points. Seems most good folk here are also partial to premises of fine refreshments - You'll find a good offering of real ales and cider at The Prince of Wales and The Black Bull, Gentlemen.

Have been experimenting with shallow water/beach ground polys with promising results IMO.

Wish I could overcome the issues I'm having with human 'cutout' figures. They show up great in FS9, but in FSX I'm banging my head against a brick wall. Have tried DXT1 and 3 - nothing doing, so if anyone has a solution for FSX, the cider's on me :-)

PS: Willy; I'll PM you as soon as I have something workable for you - Thanks :-)

Nigel, a grass strip would be ideal. As long as we could get the occasional DC-3 in and out.

As for the people cutouts, I'm doing good to work EZ Scenery, but maybe the guys at CalClassic would have an idea? They use a lot of them and some of the people there have been converting the FS9 retro scenery to FSX.

Still "gobsmacked"!

Dc-3? Yep, happy to oblige - reckon you could even manage to deftly put down a C-46 if we judge things right.

Greetings to all and apologies for delays - it's just that RW stuff that gets in our way
now and again.

Migrating from my beloved XP to Windows 7.0 has set half my scenery programs adrift, particularly sbuilder which I understand requires me to install certain modules to get it running again. Will continue the scenery - INCLUDING a landing strip for Willy, when I can get it all sorted out :wavey:

Re the people cutouts - I think so but the program I use to remove shadows frome people and tree models is on the above mentioned list.

The airstrip will take most traffic - have tried out all Miltons models of course, Dc-3, Curtiss C-46 (standing on the brakes when giving it throttle first!!!), Boeing 727; easy-peasy and our big faithful Douglas 4's and 6's for good measure.

I'd love to see some of the PV-2's, Lodestars and Mallards you talented people have been working magic on too!!!

Might just be able to squeeze in a few animations for good measure. :wiggle:

Looks outstanding! You sir, are a true artist.

On aircraft, going back to the early CFS days, if we wanted something "invisible", we used to paint the bits we didn't want to see pure black (0,0,0,). Make an alpha layer for it with those bits on the alpha also pure black. Voila, no can see in the sim. It's still done for 2d panels to see out the front. I'm not sure how it would work with scenery though, but it is a thought.

I've got an old CFS 2 paint for the simTech Do 335 (that I call ol' Bulletcatcher) that has holes shot all through it using this technique. It still works very well in FS9. Haven't tried it in FSX though but I see no reason why it wouldn't at least on aircraft.

Willy; you're spot on re 'black holes' that's the correct way to go (unless of course, the surface you're working on has a designated reflection map - in which case you'll get a sun-bright shine instead of a hole).

It's the method used by fs for autogen trees - we'll get to the bottom of this :-)

That is an absolutely beautiful plane you've got there. What model is it?

About the transparency issues - perhaps modifying one of the building textures to take reflection rather than transparency would solve the issue. I've noticed that throughout all versions of FS so far, if there are two textures with transparency that are behind one another as you view them, the combination is displayed as fully transparent. This might be solved by making sure one of the textures (as in the building behind your props, perhaps) is not set up for transparency.

Great to be back in business, great to see YOU, Rob!

Cheers, Nigel

That engine looks to have a lot of moving parts... I would expect nothing less than to hear each one clicking and clattering... as well as the ruckus combustion from each one of those cylinders. You ARE the master, Nigel... The cockpit as well as the visual model are literal eye candy, OUTSTANDING WORK!!

Great to see you Tom!!!

LOL! You know very well the valves and springs are animated.

Master? No!

But I'll gladly settle for Master's apprentice :-)

The final version sans Townend will also have the modified nose area - that's also the one I'll be fitting out with a pair of floats.

I'm seriously considering the Polish licence built, modified design variant; PWS-18.
This aircraft sported the slightly more powerful Avia Wright Whirlwind 9-cylinder radial (240 hp?)

I think I'd better set up a separate thread specifically for the Avro project, as hopefully, we should be seeing some developments on the scenery here.

Thank YOU, Sir - you're quite right of course; time to start a specific thread for the Tutor and unclogg the scenery posts. :wavey:

Tutor is daily heading closer to open hangar doors - the scenery and Milton's gorgeous skiff will be next in line.

Working on the Avro Tutor has been a steep but awesome learning experience.

VC is nearly finished, AVRO 621 Trainer (uncowled early 5 cyl Armstrong Mongoose as well as late 7 cyl Lynx and AVRO 621 Tutor almost in the BOX.

This leaves me with 621 float version, Polish 9 cyl licence-built PWS-18 and hopefully AVRO 626 Prefect IF I can squeeze out the neccessary polys for the rear, lewis gun position.

Hi Nigel.
Thank you for the update.Great news.
Cheers Chris.

For your info the Bounty,s boat modeled by Milton is the ships launch. The largest boat she carried.

The Bounty launch was typical of boats issued to Royal Navy
ships of the period. She was a standard issue 23 footer built by

a contractor to the Navy, Mister John Burr. It has been calculated that when overloaded with 19 men, gear and provisions, she floated with a bare 6 inches of freeboard.

Well explained Sir. I had wanted to put the 23' launch aboard the Bounty along with the 20' Cutter but, alas, was against technical boundaries.
So much so, that I had to gut all of the "Hold" deck and much of the lower deck furnishings of the Bounty.

Nigel's scenery is unique is so many ways but this period scene is one to be relished and I am with all of you, awaiting his time to revisit and dazzle us in historic flavor.

xpelekis
July 14th, 2016, 10:26
Well, I don't know, but P3D people "invest" in the "vehicles" logic (land, sea, air). Especially
with the avatar function in P3D v3, that you can actually change vehicles and explore the
world (scenery) on foot or with vehicles, potential increases dramatically...

At the same time, FSX/P3D mission system, offers the interactive adventure structure for
making flying adventures/stories - and Bounty is an "aircraft"...

Bounty is really a very good simulation... Only some crew figures are missing.
With her and cannons added is my first ever naval sim on my pc.

Currently I'm exploring-testing various possibilities - in mission system - to
"squiz" out of it the most features needed for the closest experience to
a 17th century naval sim.

BTW : Is there somewhere the paint kit of the boat ?... I'd like to change flag
