View Full Version : Negatives to digital?
I have a lot of photos from my navy days that I have scanned in. Problem is I scanned in the prints I got from where ever I had them developed. Which means the source for my digital images are 4x6 inch prints (if that), which means they are low resolution digital images. BUT. I have the negatives. Allowing for the possibility that the negatives, the true source, may have more resolution than the prints, how can I “translate” negatives into digital images, with all the source resolution preserved?

There are negative to digital scanners available from about $50 upwards to quite a lot of money.
These links have examples from well known and trusted US suppliers.

I've bought a lot of stuff from Adorama over the past couple of years and can personally vouch for them as a great store to deal with.
If you have a DSLR camera there are ways of photographing the negatives too, usually via an adapter tube, lens and slide/negative holder.
Thanks Larry. I'm going to see what I can do with one of those.

I ordered a Epson V600 from Amazon after some Googling. I'll report back with results when it gets here next week.

Am sure you will be quite happy with the Epson. I bought the previous model V500 about three years ago. Epson makes a good product. NC

Nice. As long as my negatives are in good shape I should in business. I guess I'd need the V100,000 to compensate for the poor skills of the photographer... :)

As I understand it, differences are in the dynamic range...
My new scanner came in today. Found a negative of a pic I had previously scanned as a 3X5 print. I'm very excited now. Here are the two. The first is the scanned in print, and the second is the negative I scanned ten minutes ago. Neither image has been edited, except to resize each to 1100x700. I see I have some "artifacts" on the new one, maybe some dust or some such on either the negative or the scanner glass. I scanned the negative at 2400 dpi, which is less than half of what this scanner is capable of. Cool beans.

Good stuff!
There's a setting (which I can't remember that helps remove some of those artifacts)
There is an option called "dust removal". It's pretty good. On the "medium" setting, the big white spot at upper right was reduced to a tiny white spot, and all the rest were gone. Doing a bunch of test runs, seeing what all the other options do...

Now I remember....."Digital ICE"....
On the V600, you can have the "dust removal" or the "digital ice" option selected, but not both. Strange thing is, I tried the ice option, but it didn't seem to do anything at all. After that, I couldn't get the dust removal option to work anymore either. Obviously more experimentation is needed.
