Big news for any airshow fans in <nobr>England (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4061086/Bye_RAF_Mildenhall#)</nobr>. I guess they'll move it to Lakenheath if they haven't already.

Wonder where all the service <nobr>members (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4061086/Bye_RAF_Mildenhall#)</nobr> will fly into? Mildenhall was the hub when i went twice.

RAF Mildenhall....brings back memories!

My first trip across the Atlantic was in a USN R4D that was on its' way to the Mediterranean with a group of SeaBees and their equipment. I was going to the UK to meet up with my ship (USS Dewey DLG-14) that had gone on a Northern European cruise while I was TDY to a school back in the US.

After hopping across the North Atlantic, I left the plane at RAF Mildenhall and I'll never forget my observations at the time. To my young eyes, it was "just like all the WWII RAF bases I had seen in movies"...with the brick buildings and other facilities. Then there was the train from Mildenhall to London. Again, straight out of the movies I had seen. So unlike American trains. I felt as though I had stepped back in time! :) That was in 1962.

This summer I shall visit Duxford for the first time and am looking to the Flying Legends weekend there. That will be my first time staying anywhere in the UK outside of London. I'm staying Saffron Weldon, which is sandwiched between RAF Debden and Little Weldon. I expect some feelings of nostalgia during that long weekend!

Don't know why all the F-35 threads are being closed but for general interest the first wing will be the 48th TFW which currently flies F-15Es. Also known for being the wing that bombed Libya in '86
