Hi
I have today released 179 new AI Ships and AI Ship routes covering most of the world. The first site to carry the package is www.simviation.com (http://www.simviation.com) - the package description is due to an upload problem missing so you get it here:

This package contains 179 AI ships and AI Ship Traffic for FSX and P3D covering almost all regions of the world. For full benefit of the files in this package you should install the previous packages in the project. New areas covered are Australia, New Zealand, Africa, India, Hawaii, the Black Sea, the South American West Coast, islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans as well as Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands - and more. Further, this package updates previous routes released for Brazil and adds trffic and diversity on shipping routes across Europe and Asia. New ship models include destroyers, frigates, cruise ships, oïl tankers, container ships, fishing vessels, coasters, river boats, and more. Ships visit among other places Sydney, Perth, Auckland, Wellington, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, Honolulu, Panama, Lima, Ushuaia, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Fortaleza, Belem, Manaus, Incheon, Ho Chi Minh, Manila, Bangkok, Koh Samui, Phuket, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Mumbai, Seychelles, Maldives, Mauritius, Dubai, Doha, Mogadishu, Durban, Cape Town, Lagos, Abidjan, Dakar, Las Palmas, Istanbul, Odessa, Burgas, Trabzon, St Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Kiel, Copenhagen, Stavanger, Liverpool, Glasgow, Reykjavik, and many more. Very cool. Thank you. Although they are barely specs from altitude it is nice to have
something down there when you get closer. Shows just how enormous the oceans are.
Would be interesting if the AI labels we have for aircraft were also displayed for water traffic.

A million of thank you, your packages are in my opinion among the most enjoyable additions to our flight simulator : you bring the ocean to life, allowing missions and exploration of very accurate ships. I will install and tedt this new one asap !

Thanks - Regards to labels - I am not sure but I think you can actually do that with the program Stenin AIround.

Below a few more screenshots from the coast of Somalia - for those who get down to surface level and might have heard about the hijacking of Maersk Alabama or seen the brilliant movie Captain Phillips with Tom Hanks - I have included it in a simplified version with coordinates according to the movie:

Yes, it is Danish - I actually watched it two days ago, when it was broadcasted on Danish television - the small coaster above is not too far from the one used in the movie, but I did not have any plans for the one in the movie. The coaster I use is a repaint of a Dutch coaster which I have put in the locations which are likely to appear in the "Kapringen" - near Eyl and Ras Hafun which are both pirate strongholds.

Your packages are fantastic and will be installing this one asap. Looking at Google maps it seems to indicate ferry traffic in the Greek Islands? Is that something you might consider?

Hi
I have put cruise ships, yachts, and other types of ships in the Aegean Sea, but no local ferries - it is too time consuming to do ferries which are then only relevant to one route compared to a container ship you can put all over.
Best regards

Henrik..

I've just loaded them all up from scratch on the fresh install. 63 ships first then 75 plus the patch. Had a quick look and the Straights of Gibraltar was alive once more. Added 130 ships (the patch too) followed by the latest release (179).. went back to Gib (same time) and saw one container ship transiting north up the Spanish west coast.. the straights were empty:o Would the new routes have made this happen or have I lost the plot somewhere along the way??

That sounds strange - you should have more traffic - did you along the way install the AI Ship Traffic for North West Europe?

Oh yes.. I forgot about that. All the ships and associated fx are in place so somewhere.. I must have cocked up with the traffic files. I'll bin the lot and drop fresh copies into Scenery\World\Scenery.. working through each release in a more methodical manner;)

Keen to try this excellent looking addition - my first go in 2013 killed all my AI traffic which suggests an unconverted FS9 TrafficFile somewhere in the mix.

I now find keeping clear about all the prerequisite files/packages - with corresponding patches - difficult to follow. Could you list out the complete or "ultimate" install sequence please? Are any of your previous packages optional? I expect you can for example install all the AI models and then use traffic files in the areas you like to fly for example and leave out others.

thanks!

You are right - the project consists of many download files - sorry for that but it is a result of the long development project - for installation you need to follow a particular order as some files updates older files that goes for ships and traffic files. When I started the project I only had 63 ships, so the diversity on the routes was limited. The newer routes takes benefit of all the ships so with the new traffic.bgl installed you can see more than 40 different ships on one route - and a place like Rio de Janeiro will have a different traffic coming in every single day during a 14 day period with more than 250 models activated in that area
The following packages exists - the ones marked by *** are obligatory if you want all ships - and you should install in the order of appearance here:

63 AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic for South America and Europe V1 (Download #175622) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=175622) ***
Patch for 63 AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic for South America and Europe V1 (Download #175703) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=175703)
AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic US West Coast (Download #176133) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=176133)
Caribbean AI Ship Traffic for 63 AI Ships (Download #175702) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=175702)
75 AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic - Mediterranean Sea and Asia (Download #178959) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=178959) ***
Patch for 75 AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic (Download #179076) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=179076)***
AI Ship Traffic for North West Europe (Download #178960) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=178960)
AI Ship Traffic for US East Coast V1 (Download #179258) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=179258)
P3D replacement effects for AI ships and AI Ship Traffic (Download #179348) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=179348)
130 AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic (Download #182953) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=182953) ***
AI Ship Traffic Mexican Gulf and Caribbean Sea (Download #183304) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=183304)
130 AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic - Patch/Fix (Download #184092) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=184092) ***
179 AI Ships and AI Ship Traffic (Download #188085) (http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=188085) ***

You can choose to install just part of the traffic bgl - order them alphabetically and it should be relatively clear which ones you need for a particular area - they will follow a naming pattern: traffic_ships_region_number.bgl - note that the North West Europe is denominated EU while the Mediterranean is Med so Italy is not part of EU in this system

Hi kl791 and Thank You for Your hard work (and all Team).

Just a question about alternative installations. Most of the time I fly over the ground, so I dont need to have this traffic always "active".
I created in AddonScenery new forlder dedicated for AI ships on/off for me. Here I put Whole Your Scenery from every ZIP file (like from the manual) but here is a problem. Which folder must be active? In This forlder I have 2 folders named Scenery now:

examples

1/ Prepar3D v2\Addon Scenery\AI Ship Traffic P3D\Scenery
2/ Prepar3D v2\Addon Scenery\AI Ship Traffic P3D\Scenery\World\Scenery

In the first and second I see bgl files with traffic.
For example
In the First:
traffic_Ships_BR_Angra_Ilha_Bella_20014... ect
In the second:
traffic_Ships_Africa_Abidjan_49173... ect

If you do not want the traffic always to be present you should go for the first and activate it when flying near or above the ocean.

1/ Prepar3D v2\Addon Scenery\AI Ship Traffic P3D\Scenery

The second does not make sense to use - The correct standard installation would be Prepared3Dv2\scenery\world\scenery - using that one ships will always be present.

But you could also to make regional folders e.g.:

1/ Prepar3D v2\Addon Scenery\AI Ship Traffic P3D Brazil\Scenery

and then just included the Brazilian traffic files in that one - that is the files starting with traffic_ships_BR_ In this case you can activate region by region. This makes sense to do for people who just fly in one area or two areas.

Ok, Thank You. I found it. In one zip (the first) You have Effect, Simobjects and Scenery folders > but it isnt folder for the main FSX path, just only for Scenery/World/Scenery (this).
The rest is ok with right path. Thank You, installed.

Hi,
It is not a question of installation which looks correct; this problem can occur in different situations e.g. when changing planes during flight where it seems like the simulator reloads the traffic - however it doesn't always happen.

Have now done the full install - thanks again Henrik for the listing above. The good news is that it didn't kill my aircraft AI this time. As a quick check to see ships I slewed to NYC harbour and saw lots of ships. They are not moving however, all parked. Is this normal? My own work - mostly manual - with AI carrier/ship tracks indicates that they should move at some point depending on their BoatTraffic schedule. Alternatively, if there are static ship (scenery bgls) in the package, maybe my install hasn't worked 100%.

Is there a good location to recommend seeing moving shipping at most times during the day?

YoYo, if you didn't already fix this, I have it happen to me with AI aircraft after switching planes or other testing. My trick is to set traffic to "0", go back in the sim, then reset the traffic to whatever % setting you had previously.

Is anyone else having trouble unzipping the file? WinZip Pro keeps hanging on me with a series of prompts that say "Skipping file: unable to create a sensible filename out of [file path details] Effects for USS Halyburton FSX Only/Effects/fsx_AI_Hamaship_STERN_SPRAY_m.fx" When I click "OK" and try to continue, I get several more of these. Never had a problem like this with any of Henrik's previous files. Should I be trying a different unzip utility? FYI that I've tried downloading from both Simviation and Avsim and hit the same snag, so it doesn't seem like a corrupt download. Am open to counsel as to next steps. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: It turns out that the WinZip problem is something that happens when the destination path is longer than the program can handle - a system-specific result of the location of my P3D downloads folder, which explains why it wasn't happening to anyone else. Solution was to unzip to a temp file on the desktop. Have now unzipped with no problems and installed everything. Now off to load up my A2A B-17 in Coastal Command paint and go keep an eye on local shipping...

Hi
Thanks for returning with the explanation - I always get a bit worried if I hear about a potential problem with the packages - but so far this one looks good :D

Sadly the people behind FS2000.org has once again stolen one of my packages and uploaded it on their website against the guidelines in the copyright. I do not put the full link to their website as it is not a community website but a purely commercial website, which lives from clicks and advertising income without contributing anything to the community. They drive the clicks with freeware uploaded without the accept of the authors and I warn everybody about downloading from their website or even purchasing from their so-called "shop". Ultimately sites like fs2000.org kills the possibility of creating and sharing freeware, but by not visiting them you help to destroy their business model.</article>

Henrik;

Looking forward to the Great Lakes package. Is there a chance you could include the six 140 foot Bay Class Cutter icebreaking tugs of the US Coast Guard?
These 'black hull' Cutters keep the Great Lakes' shipping lanes open in the winter.
Only one model would be required as with the exception of the bow numbers all look the same.
Half way down this link are links to the Bay Class Cutters. http://www.uscg.mil/datasheet/140wtgb.asp

KATMAI BAY (http://www.uscg.mil/d9/cgcKatmaiBay) (WTGB 101) Sault Ste. Marie, MI

BISCAYNE BAY (WTGB 104) St. Ignace, MI

I am familiar with AITB and could provide the 'flight (float) plans'. I am a bit biased toward these ships as I served on the Morro Bay in a prior life.

Hi Joe,
As mentioned on Avsim - if someone can provide a drawing then they could go on the list, but I need at least a decent side view and a top view.

For the moment a small Danish addition - the patrol ships Ejnar Mikkelsen and Knud Rasmussen here in P3D and below in FSX

I'm hoping your classic / retro ships pack (or even some partial part thereof) one day materialises. My dream is to replace all stock AI boats/ships with your retro ships. Even if there is not a 1:1 ratio of OEM ships to classic ships, just having a few of these vessels creating a "FSX1960" AI experience would be sublime.

In any event - thanks for your great work.

Best regards,

dl

Regards to the classic ships - if you are into doing you own routes with AIBTC or replacing your default ships you might actually already find something in the packages - in the last package there were the Nordstjernen ferry from 1956, the Skogøy ferry from 1953, the Funchal from 1960 and three liberty ships in war paints - the liberty ships are not activated on the routes yet. They will be in the next update, but the models and effects are there so you can do your own routes with them. Jean-Pierre has also released several of his ships on http://www.jpfil.com/quebecfsx/index.php including the passenger ship Empress of Ireland, the tug Eureka, the steamer Storstad, and the passenger ship Tadoussac - and if you are really desperate an MP to me might provide you with another 7-8 post WWII civil freigthers...

You can insert your own routes using the AIBTC freeware program plus Google Earth - but the packages do come complete with routes for most of the important shipping lanes in the world, so it is only if you have a specific local area that you want to cover that you need to add something.

I would most prefer to specifically place a ship at will, that's why I was wondering. Do you have any idea if it's possible? I should be able to figure out my own answer, but it's been a long time since I had done it last.

No, Jean-Pierre Fillion did one icebreaker though it is not nuclear, it could most likely be used in the next update or you can find it directly at Jean-Pierre's website http://www.jpfil.com/quebecfsx/index.php - and you can also find and Argentinian icebreaker here: http://www.flightsimulatorarg.com.ar/vehiculosespeciales_X.htm

Then I think you should use AICarriers - though I am not a specialist on that one you can certainly use it with the ships from the package. Or you can transform the ships into a static objects with librarymaker programs.

They now wear 'Red Dusters' rather than the Stars'n'Stripes (all the ones in that convoy anyway) and I've lowered them in the water by 10ft to represent them being fully laden. Fantastic shot and utilization of the Liberty model... Exactly the use I imagined when I started doing the model. You should soon have more for the variation as the modern pack has gone in Beta and I can return to the classic collection. First up a small 1937 steamer.
Regards to your comments on FPS - all models are done with minimal draw call - one texture for the whole model. I think that is the major part of the trick. Of course the liberty ships are much simpler than an aircraft carrier, but compared to similar size models that I have seen and analyzed and which have been done in Sketchup they are much lighter. When analyzing one of the new ships for the upcoming package done by another author in Sketchup, we realized that vertices for that freighter was 6 times higher than my ships and drawcall 40 compared to 2... I model in good old GMAX and start from a texture - I think Sketchup modeling often tricks you to eg write letters directly in the model which is extremely costly on vertices instead of having the ship name on the texture sheet with no impact on frames.

Good that I have a solid tradition for making patches....:apathy: And it might not be Milton who put the three ensigns there... It can be from the compilation I did of the model to make the wake sit better in the water when the Bounty is used as AI ship in P3D - it might have messed up an animation, and I did not go close enough to see it when I did the test. Actually I think you can notice it also on the screen below, which is from the test, but you have to look for it - I just looked at the waterline...

Very nice to see the Skjold class coastal corvette! (formerly called Missile torpedo boat) We don't really have the funding to have these boats in the Norwegian military, but the ships themselves are rather lethal machines. Very high speed, stealth capabilities and a heavy armament of one 76 gun and 8 Norwegian made NSM long range anti ship stealth missiles. Really made for a cold war type scenario. Their high cost made them unwelcome in the Norwegian military and the program was only saved by the politicians which wanted to save the ship yard which made them... But in todays situation with Russia, they are maybe not a bad capability to have after all.. if the Norwegian navy only could find money to fund their use..

Incidentally.. seeing the name Haakonsvern reminded me I visited there on HMS Norfolk(D21) when we were Comstanavforlant.. late '80 or early '81. The official reason was for fuel but the more widely accepted 'unofficial' reason was that the Commodore saw an opportunity for the ship to qualify for LOA (local overseas allowance)!! I think we were only there for some 18hrs (we did actually take-on fuel too) but shore leave was granted.. all of port watch for 6hrs then all of stbd watch. There's precious little to do in any naval base so some of us caught a bus to Bergen which in itself.. took a long time leaving us to run around and see as much as we could before finding transport back! Not the best way to see anywhere really but there you go. Got back to the ship exhausted then straight on watch:biggrin-new:

That leaves one question - I have seen a lot of the 1960 stuff is in FS2004 - is there anybody interested in the classic ships compiled for FS2004? They will not include routes as this requires doing particular AFCADs but the models could be compiled as static ships with bmp textures.

As always.. stunning work Henrik:encouragement:

Incidentally.. I knocked this up a few days ago using your Liberty's..
http://daveb.cbfsim.org/public/convoy7.jpg

Believe it or not.. the only thing that pulled my FR's down was the carrier in the middle of the convoy and the 4 warships around the outside. Sadly.. the FS maritime world needs more 'period' merchant ships but for now.. the Liberty Ships will do fine:encouragement:

You can see here how I built it up. For once, I had a plan!!! First.. the carrier then a ship ahead and behind it. A quick look in FS then another ship ahead and behind the previous two. Then.. ships to the left.. and ships to the right. Had another look in FS. More ships to the left of those and more ships to the right. Finally.. the support ships ahead, to the side and behind (in actual fact.. Belfast ahead, the corvette to the rear then the destroyers on either side):)

I could have gone on. Henrik's Liberty ships are so low on poly count and draw call, I'm sure I could have pegged another 10 without issue. Any apparent hit only began when I swapped the central Liberty for the carrier and then added the support ships. I think a few more would have been nice (Corvettes) but this was a good time to stop!!

EDIT: Incidentally.. I made a slightly different version of Henrik's default Liberty's by changing the flag from the StarsNBars to the Red Duster and named it ai_victory (based on the John model). This in case you're looking for ai_victory which you won't find.

Hello Mate:wavey:

You're welcome;)

Well.. it depends on what you're looking for really. Most of my larger formations have some symmetry but my smaller formations can be hit and miss. I did one for Ark Royal IV this afternoon making her the centre ship (, 0, 0).. I then put Glamorgan 1000 ahead (on the centreline), Leander 800 to the right (but in line with Ark) and a tanker -400 from Ark's centreline (to the left) and -600 back

[formation.43]
title=HMS Ark Royal IV Group
unit.0=HMS Ark Royal, 0, 0
unit.1=HMS Glamorgan, 0, 1000
unit.2=Leander, 600, 0
unit.3=Old Tanker, -400, -600

It's loose but what might have happened at a given moment in time. Sadly.. we don't really have a proliferation of UK RFA's so whatever I do there has more than a tad of artistic license!!

With larger formations (like that convoy).. it's best to have a plan. I'd decided the formation was going to be 5 ships deep (line ahead) but hadn't decided how many lines of ships there were going to be or what the spacing would be. As you can see from the convoy formation.. from top to bottom.. Victorious is the centre of the world.. surrounded by everything else (protect the carrier at all costs e t c). I then added 2 ahead doubling the distance with the last one and again.. 2 more to the rear.. distances doubled each time. Ships were then added to the right (no minus on the first set.. positive = right.. negative =left) centred on the carrier then again.. to the left (minus in the first set of numbers). To the very best of my knowledge.. there's no magic tool to do this. You build each formation either from scratch or if you see one you like.. copy that and change the model references. It's easier if you start small and work your way up and use 'different' ships at each position. That way.. you can see exactly where each ship is in relation to the numbers you put in. You'll get used to knowing what each numeric line is (centre or left/right.. ahead or behind) but even so.. it may help to put the 'picture' in your head down on paper and work from that. Small formations are easy but bigger ones can get you lost!

It's a lot of fun and very easy to end up with a very large conf.d file:biggrin-new:

Hi Joe,
As mentioned on Avsim - if someone can provide a drawing then they could go on the list, but I need at least a decent side view and a top view.

For the moment a small Danish addition - the patrol ships Ejnar Mikkelsen and Knud Rasmussen here in P3D and below in FSX

Hi Bookman,

Yes, the project is alive. Work and other reallife issues have reduced the communication a bit, but a new package is almost ready. Very few models missing. The new models are adapted to work also with P3Dv3.1 - however I also need to make a new effect package for all ships and correct some models for them to work correctly in P3Dv3.1 due to the wave effects.

Hi,
Yes, I am aware of the problem which appeared in P3Dv3.1. For the moment the solution is to turn down your water setting from ultra to high. That solves the issue. There is also another fix possible, but it requires revisiting mdl files and sim.cfg's and I will only do that at a later point.

Hi Dimus,

Plans are highly appreciated :applause: :applause: :applause:Even if it has become easier to find plans; many shipping companies publish their GA plans on the web, but often in reduced formats or with a limited number of decks shown or maybe just a side profile. Having a good plan cuts the modeling time by 30 - 50 %. Recently I got access to the older versions of Significant Ships, which is a treasure chest for a ship modeller, but to purchase the new ones is quite an investment. The plans which are highest on my wishing list for the time being are good plans of some of the mega container vessels - I did the Maersk McKinney Møller purely based on pictures and stills from the Discovery channel documentary about this ship. Later I visited one of the sisterships, and I got access to some basic plans and what I did is not far off, but still with a plan it is better... So if you (or anybody else) should happen to have plans of one the new 20.000 TEU container ships it would be great... Other plans are also welcome; my normal criteria when I search for targets is that there is a potential for repaints. So standard types purchased by many shipping companies are better than unique ships unless it is a ship with a very special story... Maersk Alabama I did because of the movie and the dramatic pirate attack... Others have been done because fellow simmers have sailed on them e.g. Andrew Thomsen - the author of Airports of Norway freeware - sailed on Vigdis Knutzen, so modelling that one was an obvious way to say thanks for his giant work for the community...

I don't see any ships in the Persian Gulf, does anyone else see these ships?

I have run the conversion thing for the FS9. The only other AI in the area that I know of is the one that comes with the Aerosoft F-14 Kitty Hawk.
I see AI ships out in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any ideas?

I dunno mate. I have the AS F-14 too so whatever it installed is also active here. Have a look in your scenery/world/scenery folder. I have 59 traffic files for Arabia starting with traffic_Ships_Arabia_Bahrain ending with traffic_Ships_Arabia_suez. I think my ship traffic is around 80-85% on the slider.. perhaps higher. I used to have it at 100% but this produced unsightly gatherings of ships (default ship traffic) at places like Portsmouth (England) and pulling the slider back reduced their numbers.

Would there be (by chance) the Corsica Ferries (http://corsica.forhikers.com/ferries) in the package?

There are 4 different companies that ply the Med between France, Corsica and Sardinia. Any or all of them would be greatly appreciated if they are there. If not then no worries.

I have ferries included from Genova and other Italian harbours to Sardinia, but none from France - the reason is an existing freeware - I can't remember the name right now - with Toulon including AI ferries to Corsica. I do however have plans of some of the ferries so maybe in the future.

I have ferries included from Genova and other Italian harbours to Sardinia, but none from France - the reason is an existing freeware - I can't remember the name right now - with Toulon including AI ferries to Corsica. I do however have plans of some of the ferries so maybe in the future.

Thanks,
I will see if I can find it.
