View Full Version : Tandragee airfield, Northern Ireland

This was a request from a good friend in Northern Ireland who flies from there.

This strip is home of Kernan Aviation, a microlight school and club. This is my biggest photoreal scenery so far with full seasonal variations. It was build to match ORBX's FTX EU Northern Ireland. However, I though I'd cater for people not having it and included two more bgls for the photoreal with adjusted colour corrections, one for ORBX Global and one for GEX textures. I don't have default textures any more so the GEX version is probably the best bet for those with default.

It will hopefully soon be up at the library (big file!) and may be tomorrow at Avsim too.

Thanks guys!

It seems to be up in the library now: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links_search.php?action=show&keys=1&keyword=tandragee_vd_v1.zip

Hope you enjoy it. The runway is just 12 feet wide. Good for microlights but also great practice to try and put down a Cub on it. For Cessnas or larger, it's not easy but very nice for strict alignment practice.

For the real thing check out Kernan's site: http://www.kernanaviation.co.uk/
There are galleries with lots of pictures that I used for the scenery too.

Just a HU concerning this terrific scenery. . .there is an Ikarus C42 available for download on the Rikoooo website here:
http://www.rikoooo.com/en/downloads/viewdownload/104/677

It is a Red Cross livery and that is explained in full during the installation. . .too lengthy to go into here. Repaints will be simple to do however. The C42 is the aircraft flown for training at Kernan Aviation, so it's ideal for Dimus's scenery. One note for P3D users. . .it states that it's compatible with P3D_V1&2+. . .however it is not. It may be compatible with Ver 1 and possibly even the original V2 (prior to all the updates). . .but I run Ver2.4 and what I found is that the prop blur needs to be replaced, the glass needs the alpha darkened and nothing in the VC is clickable. The first two were simple to correct, and not being anything close to a "purist", while having the cockpit fully functional would be great, there's so little that requires any work once the engine is started that I find it inconsequential. It's a nice little airplane to enjoy the Irish countryside.

Many thanks for this airfield Dimus, it looks great in the screen shots. I've downloaded and installed it into P3D v2.4 as per the instructions ,but when I've gone to airport selection panel Tandragee is not showing up, any suggestions?

Ian, I used the ICAO code Dimus assigned and found it that way.

Oh thanks Falcon, I hadn't seen that.

The airport name l set is Kernan and the town/city is Tandragee. EGTA is of course fictional, there is no real ICAO code for the strip.

Ed, that is a good lead for the Icarus. My friend who actually requested the scenery will sure appreciate it. I"ll check it out. I used a freeware Aeropakt Foxbat in my shots.

I haven't tested the scenery too much in P3D and I haven't yet installed the 2.4 patch so for any bugs or issues you find please let me know.

The scenery is now also also available at Avsim.

Hi Dimus,
I still have not been able to find the airfield either by it's names or by the ICOA code. EGTA is used by Thaime airfield in Buckinghamshire.

The only things I noticed were the rwy. . . .in your pics looks relatively flat, but in V2.4 there is an incline from the start position up to the first turnoff to the left. . .the remaining rwy is flat. It seems to be that way in the video I watched also. . .a slight incline at the beginning. Also, I have FTX Global and FTX Vector. . .the Fall autogen in your shots shows a good mixture between the surrounding trees and those beyond the airports. . .in mine all the trees placed around the airport are a different color than those beyond the airport so the airport proper is obvious from any distance as it's all one color and different from the outlying areas.

You're quite right Ed. My main problem was that I could not identify the correct autogen grouping that would match what was used in the ORBX Global textures. After many trials and error, I used tb Maple as it is what best worked in spring and summer when the trees are green. It is the same all around the scenery, with only tree height differing, except for a few poplars here and there. The issue shows more in winter when they lose their leaves and their branches are lighter colour.

I wish I could find what grouping the ORBX textures are using and use the same. If anyone knows and can point me to it I can rework the annotation.

As for the incline, it is there but it is less pronounced when using FTX EU Northern Ireland which is how the screenshots were taken. I guess the mesh used by the specific ORBX region is slightly different.

Ian, using "Kernan airfield" in the airport name field will bring it up for me both in FSX and P3D and there does not seem to be another EGTA in FSX or P3D. I looked it up though and indeed there is an EGTA, a grass field in Aylesbury. Perhaps you have some addon scenery for this field that uses that code? Please check and if so I will create an alternate AFCAD file with another airport name and send to you. PM me your email if you wish.

Hi Dimus,
Yes, I have the UK2000 airfields installed, and yes I would appreciate that if it's not to much trouble.

If it is in UK2000 than more people will have an issue.

Here is a temporary patch. Tell me if it works:

Took a flight from Kernan Airfield to Belfast City in the Ikarus C42. Nice countryside even with just FTX Global and FTX Vector.

A bit more on the Ikarus C42 from Rikoooo. After finding some faults with the airplane in P3D_V2.4 I wrote to the website this morning advising them of the issues and suggested that they add somewhere that the airplane had not been tested in P3D_V2x which they have done. There have been many revisions since V2.0 was released and each one seems to move FSX aircraft farther and farther away from compatibility. So, while I think the aircraft is still worthy of download, especially for FSX of course but also at least for those Flying P3D_V1.4 and possibly even V2.0. . .beyond that however, you need to do some testing to see for yourself. I have kept it because I found the lack of clickabilty a small problem. . .the gauges function correctly so I can see at a glance how the aircraft is performing and adjustments for trim and flight controls and control surfaces are all mapped to either my CH Throttle or the Joystick buttons. I did add an AP for longer flights (the aircraft config file needs to be tweaked for this to be available).

For repainters the model is a bit frustrating because in many instances one texture has been used on multiple parts thru out the aircraft making it impossible to add color to areas that need it because that same color pops up in areas where your don't want it, lol. Case in point is the spinner. . .that texture is also one half of the left wheel pant and I believe the antenna mounted above the cockpit. There are other examples, so repaints may not be completed as per the original because of this shortcoming. Still. . .it's a cool little airplane, fun to fly and great for experiencing some of the latest detailed sceneries available.

Very nice work. I like the winter image -- you need to know what you're looking for.

I've uploaded the patch to the SOH library and Avsim for all UK2000 users.

fsfranek, indeed you need to know what you're looking for. We flew on line with a few guys last evening from Aldergrove and had fun trying to spot it and land on the tiny "driveway-runway". It was good to see the field full of planes. Like a fly-in!
