Hi,

Would just like to introduce our (airfieldconstructiongroup.org) work in progress airfield which is RAF Wattisham set in the 1990's.

Wow! Is it still WIP?.

Anyone who may be a regular visitor or have visited our forum in the past may recall we started RAF Wattisham a few years ago, but it was eventually scrapped. This is a completely new from scratch version started at the beginning of the year with custom AI phantoms and custom built ground polygons....

Awesome, is that AI Phantom native FSX? Takes be back to June 1992 at the aircraft spotters place on Ware Road near the 74 Sqn taxi track when they mass launched more than 16 jets to do formation flyby's. I never forget the sight and sound of them starting up on the ASP.

Dale

The last few ACG offerings have been for both FS9 and FSX and, given the choice of forum.....

The Phantoms might be the Mike Pearson models or, then again, they might be John Young's own.
The 74 Sqn markings seem to be on an FGR2 model, which suggests a fairly late timescale.

This is all after my time there (1978 - 1983), as the HASs were still under construction when I left.
56 Sqn were still using Hangar 1, with 29/23 Sqn using Hangar 2. Both squadrons still parked on the main pan.

Hi,

At the moment we have only worked on the FSX version, hence the post here, but a fs9 version is not out of the question, it's easier to convert FSX models backward to FS9 than it is the other way.

It is based in the early 1990's

The Phantoms are native FSX coded, loving built by John Young. John has also built the majority of the airfield buildings such as those on the HAS sites and 50% of the custom ground.

Cracking stuff. Looking forward to it. How are you finding making the ground poly with ADE, I am yet to give it a go?

Stevo76
July 8th, 2014, 10:57
Hi Dale,

ADE is great for ground polygons and does the job well, however we found the mapping part (applying the texture to the polygon) to be lacking at it current incarnation and found Gmax uvw unwrap to be much better especially around curves which ADE struggled with particularly textures with lines in both direction such as concrete. So all of this polygon was done in gmax.

but ADE and it's ground poly addition is superb and for many reasons the main ones being, having the default runways, taxiways, buildings and the custom ground polys all in one program and no need to use other programs and everything is perfectly aligned.

We compiled the exported Gmax .mdls with model converter x.

We have the crash net up on one end of the runway, while at the other end it's down, the pair switching according to wind direction. Rotation of the PAR and ATC van also works on the same principle.

The QRA sheds have animated doors. They can be opened/closed by a user key press. We thought that would be useful when the user takes the place of one of the AI QRA Phantoms with a flyable aircraft.

The QRA AI Phantoms are programmed as a pair, departing together, using separate overlay AFCADS (AFX):

Great AF base, thank you.

As the readme told, the base was also home for Lightnings before 1976. Could it be difficult to change the Phantoms to Lightnings? Maybe alter the traffic files?

Stevo76
January 3rd, 2015, 04:41
Hi

Glad everyone is enjoying the airfield...

Yes you could change the aircraft to the Lightning, John Young has made an AI Lightning and is available from the usual places. You'd need to create a new traffic file and the airfield was a bit different in the lighting era, there were no HAS hangars, the Lightning would have sat between blast walls on dispersed parking around the airfield some of which remain and are in the scenery some are visible in the screenshot in the above post.

The breathing sound has nothing to do with the ACG scenery or the AI Phantoms, it comes from the IRIS Phantom that is used as flyable aircraft in the video.

Hi

Uploading to Avsim as I write this is a seasonal version of Wattisham called RAF Wattisham 1991 - Seasonal Edition. It is compatible with Orbx FTX England only and requires the free 3rd part software SODE for it to work which is 100% needed. It is used to switch the seasonal textures on Trees and 3d grass mounds.

It has Summer, Fall, Winter, Hard Winter and Spring on the ground textures and the hangars have snow on the roof in hard winter. All ground textures by Pete Beeby

http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww195/ACGimages/RAF_Wattisham_Seasonal_Edition.jpg~original (http://s719.photobucket.com/user/ACGimages/media/RAF_Wattisham_Seasonal_Edition.jpg.html)

Its officially compatible with FSX only, but with a bit of work (in regard to SODE) it can also fully function in FSX Steam Edition and P3D. Instruction are on our forum....

Should be available in the next 24hr's

If you have the original RAF Wattisham 1991 package you need to grab the EGUW_ADEX_SL_OBJ.bgl (18.8mb) from the scenery
folder. The one that comes with the new package is smaller (12.5mb) and is missing the hangers and a few other objects.

Joe

Please note...you do not need any other file from the original wattisham as Butcherbird17 has sugested. All that is missing is not having a quick glance over the manual..LOL

You need to download and install SODE, full instructions are in the manual.....If you dont have SODE then the Hangars, trees and grassed mound, QRA animated Doors, plus objects that turn with wind direction such as arrester nets, Runway caravan and PAR radar will not show. I did mention in my original post yesterday that 3rd party software SODE is 100% required...LOL. Putting in the file suggested above will only put the scenery back to how it was originally....

SODE or Scenery Object Display Engine for those who dont know is a small piece of software that communicates with FSX and can show models depending on a variety of conditional display options. Models are placed into FSX as Simobjects so in essence are AI objects. SODE can then dispay these objects and change things such as wind direction or the texture which is being displayed on model depending on, for example, what season it is.

Please read the manual thats why we take the time to put it in there, we would not release a scenery with parts missing it is all there it just works differently in this version...:encouragement:

This is how it looks in FSX with the ORBX FTX Egnland Addon in Hard Winter which is January in the sim.

I would like to know how this was done- for FSX. Face-to-user has a trigger or condition usually made with Modeltweaker as I recall. This done with makemdl. If the object has a transparency to it as well you get to keep the face-to-user when imported into FSX, but the trans is not good (either a black box around the object or incorrect background-box- we've all seen this).

If you correct the trans for FSX this works, but you lose the 'condition'. In other words you can have one or the other but not both.

In this scenery for FSX I see that both ARE working! How is this done. I tried to export the person, using makemdl model then putting it into its own library. This seemed to work, but the face-to-user seems to rotate just a certain amount then stops until you move around to the opposite side.
