Blue Eagles

TV was broadcast from U.S. Navy NC-121J (Super Constellation) aircraft. These aircraft were known as Blue Eagles and operated as Project Jenny

When I was stationed at NAS Cubi Pt PI, (AKA NAS Olongapo :adoration:) I use to see these flying TV stations. I helped and AE change a battery on one. Battery was located just above
the nose gear and had to use a bomb hoist to remove/replace battery. Got a peek at the TV camera inside the cabin.

AFVN Television was broadcast from a navy airplane before the permanent land station was built in Saigon. This was the world's first airborne television station. It was called Project Jenny. The planes were called Blue Eagles. The mission also had other classified functions as well.

I was a "Blue Eagle" during '66 and '67. Made two 6-month TDY's to VietNam during those years. I crewed on
"444" mostly but also flew on "641" and "655". My second TDY was flying on "627", the 'radio bird' out of
DaNang.

The crew was a mix of brown shoes and us blackshoes. We had the responsibility of operating and maintaining
the commercial radio and TV gear on the OASU/VX-8 Project Jenny Connies.

Between my two deployments I was TDY to Lockheed Air Service at JFK airport where "627" was being
overhauled and refitted. That was almost like being a civilian, living in a motel in Jamaica, NY and driving
a rental car for the frequent trips up the Hudson to the equipment manufacturers sites. Good duty :)
