Hello everyone,
While Alex and I are waiting for the F-4B to get painted up, I've returned to a project I've been working on for quite awhile.
It's the Legacy Hornet.
While serving in the Marine Corps, I had the awesome opportunity to serve with a reserve Marine squadron aboard Andrews AFB, VMFA-321. Being an aviation fan since I was a kid, it was awesome being around what came to be my favorite jet (which had previously been the A-6 Intruder, which had been retired a few years before). Previously, as a field radio operator, I had only been able to see these aircraft from afar dropping training ordinance. Having the opportunity to actually sit in one and fly our simulator was more than a guy could ask for!

So, I'm finally getting around to making my dream of offering a Legacy Hornet with hopefully VRS level realism a reality! I'm also planning on doing every version I can, since they're all fairly similar (this includes CF-188). It's still fairly early WIP, I've only gotten to shadow mapping the exterior and I'm still working on the VCs, but here are some exterior shots. Please let me know what you all think!

Thanks,
Jamal

Welp, I was seriously considering doing the YF-18A/B, since there's just a bit of minor differences externally. I suppose I could just throw the camera platter onto a single seat A. The platter mesh on the nose is swappable on the model, so it's really easy for me to mix and match parts.

Heya Wingnut,
I've started back up with the F-4 after we received access to the VRS Tacpack to finish out the weapons so I can get those submitted.
I'll post up some VC shots in a few hours to show where I left off.

Dang that looks nice. I especially like the correct shape of the canopy, in that it bulges outward from the canopy rail. It's a cool view, when sitting in the seat, something that stuck in my brain for some reason. Other Hornets out there in FS land have the canopy going straight up from the rail, nice as they are in all other respects. That EF-18M I had to Google. Looked like some odd mix between a C/D and an E/F. Very interesting.

spins_vmfa321

It's a lower poly version of the main project developed for Combat Pilot Series by MadCatz. I was approached about a year or so ago to contribute a Hornet model for the sim. I actually made two, a single and two seater. Previously, I had been the number 5 member in the FSXBA, had recently left as a flying member of the group. As a way to support and contribute to the team, I made an agreement with MadCatz to make a version of the CP Hornet specifically for, and to be exclusively used by, the FSXBA.

Jimi, formerly the Boss of the FSXBA, recently made an agreement with MadCatz to release the CP Hornets for free to the community which are the screenshots posted. I cannot, since I don't own those models, support them in anyway, and there are quite a bit of modeling issues with them. But, the general shapes are similar to what I'm developing! Just much lower polys, alot of minute details omitted. Pilot models between the CP tactial versions and the FSXBA version are completely different. I think only the FSXBA version has wing flexing, although you should still see flexing from the VC if it's shared amongst the different models.

Seems to be some confusion on this thread, which was originally for spins_vmfa321 new legacy Hornet.

The Madcatz version is carried over from the CombatPilot Series "game" and released as freeware WIP, becoming the FSXBA 2014 model.

The Sludge and early FSXBA versions are mods to the default FSX-Accel Hornet and Capt Sim Delta.

NC, the Sludge v2 is still out and also WIP, but based off the stock Bug.

Heya Alberto,
Nothing to significant. I've reworked weapons and have been working on texturing the VC (I'm not the best painter in the world). I've been working on Tacpack integration. I don't think I'll have any significant update for about a month or so, but I can post up some little bits here and there from time to time to show progress. Here are the last couple of updates I put on my flickr. I wanted to test the mapping I made on the plane to see how easy or hard it would be to apply special paint schemes. If I can do it... anyone can.

Beautiful looking aircraft, and the functionality, for a freebie, seems quite good.
Once problem i am having, wonder if others are as well. Once i launch (in my testing i was launching out of KNTD (Pt Mugu, CA), the aircraft "wants" to steady up on about 140 heading. Doesnt matter what i do, - tried selecting autorudder off (not working), enabling then disabling auto pilot- pull hard and yaw left over to 070 or so, and it starts a yaw rate of 10-13 per second until it gets itself over to around 140. I have never seen this behavior in any aircraft before.
Any thoughts on what i may have going on would be much appreciated.

Thanks and cheers!
Deke

Wondering if there is anything new regarding the legacy Hornet?

Doing trap practice with v15.2 of the prototype at the moment. My approaches get better, but I never actually trap. Bug or lack of skill, don't know.

Link:
http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php/topic,6944.msg91279.html#msg91279

Last release of the fleet variants (that I could find):
http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php/topic,6944.msg87630.html#msg87630

There's been a few mods in between, so it might be worthwile to dig through the thread if you need the fleet models.

Beware of bugs though.

Cockpit hints:
- If you don't get a HUD despite trying the panel switches: Avionics master switch.
- The switches for the exterior lights are behind the throttles.

- Edit:

Whoopeee! Did it!

Also: "Auto Flaps" only covers a narrow range of flaps. And flaps are useful for landings. Especially on carriers.

Sorry in advance for proliferating the hijacking of this thread -

I had no idea this high quality freeware existed! I just download and installed v15.2 and am very impressed with what I see for free. However, I get error messages when I select either variant that references the "Clean" model (prototype and VFC-12). Also, I see no afterburner effects. Do you have these issues as well, or is it just me? I'm in P3D v2.5, if that matters.

Fleet package? I don't use that (filesize too large).

Check that the [Fltsim] entries (awkwardly located somewhere near the bottom of the aircraft.cfg) point to the correct model folders and .air file.

Just installed this beauty. Can't figure out how to get the ILS needles on the HUD, though. KIAS vs. AOA on approach seems to be spot on, which is nice. Haven't tried landing on a carrier yet. That's next. I don't have after burner effects in FSX either. Not too worried about it - if I can't see that from the cockpit, I don't worry about it...

I had the same issue with the afterburner: http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php/topic,6944.msg92430.html#msg92430 (response is on next page)

You need to install the effects from the "effects" folder in the F-18 folder into your main effects folder.

Hey guys, still working out some of these bugs. As for the flaps, they are per NATOPS with an normal auto flap max range of about 20-25 degrees. 30 degrees for HALF and 45 degrees for FULL.

We are still working primarily on FCS control logic and making some good progress. Updates to be release soon.

Thanks for the continued feedback and support.

Any chance for at least minimal documentation on the intricacies of the model?

Something like you guys did for the MCP regarding setting radio channels.

The cockpit is pretty self-explanatory if you can fly a F-16, but the flap operation stuff wasn't noted anywhere.
Also, I still don't know what exactly the auto-trim stuff (that you've tied to the pitot switches) is supposed to do.

Manual is currently in the works. Not sure which version you currently have, but auto-trim automatically kicks on once the jet is in Up and Away (UA) mode. The mode is usually set when flaps are set to AUTO (Up position) and Speed is above 240 KCAS. I think its also the gear that triggers it in that version as well. There is nothing you have to do manually to activate it. It's automatic. Basically the system automatically trims the jet to 1 G once the stick is released, thereby cancelling the need to manually trim the jet to hold a certain pitch attitude. It will do this all the way up to 22 degs AOA. It also disengages once the gear is lowered

Auto trim is not tied to the pitot switch in this version.

Hope this helps.

The development thread is here: http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php/topic,6944.0.html

New releases are published on the go and this one is the latest (prototype model only):
http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php/topic,6944.msg110392.html#msg110392

A new, general release is in the works and will, apparently, finally reduce the awful number of model veriations cluttering up the hard drive.

Release 16.1 did work well.

The latest "official" release of Jimi's (and his amazing team!) Hornet is the v16.1, and it works wonderfully!
Look in Jimi's sig for the link to it. If you can't find it, I'll post the link for you all.
Comes with an autoinstaller that permits you to choose the "loadout(s)" you desire to fly. Clean, with no pylons or external tanks, Training, with pylons and a centerline tank, A-A, with AIM-9 and AIM-120 missiles, A-G, with several different types of bomb loads, etc etc. The autoinstaller will install several folders for you, like a Base folder, required for all loadouts, and a folder for each individual load. Saves a lot of HD space doing it that way. The autoinstaller will also install the correct ,NET Framework version required by the Hornet_FCS.dll file to function.
Please note: during the .NET Framework installation, the computer may seem to freeze up, or lock up. It's not. The install is functioning correctly, it just takes while. Just let it run until it's finished. This file is vital to correct functioning of the FCS systems, so make sure you install it.
As to use of the flaps: Please note that the switch in the cockpit is eye-candy ONLY. It doesn't affect the flaps in the least. Use the default keys, F5-F8, to control the flaps, or assign joystick button(s) to the function. Use Flaps 1/2 (first step down, or F6) for take-off, and Flaps Full (2nd step down, or F8) for landing. After you get the plane into the air and climbing, retract the gear and flaps (F5) and fly away! And a real joy to fly away it is, too!
Make sure the aircraft gross weight is below 33k lbs for landing aboard the boat. If using an overhead recovery, approach the boat/runway close aboard to starboard, on the BRC, 800'AGL, 350 KIAS. As you pass the bow, make a level break turn, reduce the throttle to idle, and extend the speed-brake. As the plane slows below 250 KIAS (about 1/2 way through the turn to downwind), extend the gear and select Flaps Full. The plane will trim to 8.1° nose up, which is the correct pitch trim for landing. Control your sink rate with the throttle. Speed in the groove should be about 135 or so, with a sink rate of 700-800 fpm. The different boats have different ILS frequencies, with 47X for the default, 57X for the Nimitz v2, and so on. You can turn the ILS needles on with the HUD Control panel.
I just love this plane! I use the Training loadout, as with the centerline tank, I can fly a while, do aerobatics, ACM, etc, and then come down, place a boat with AICarriers (the .NET version!), set it in motion, and set the wind at about 10 Kts down the angle, for a WOD of 35 Kts, which is the correct amount of wind for the plane to trap. Then I can do carrier practice as long as I want. Which I do :D
If I'm feeling masochistic that day, I load up the vLSO program, too. I personally believe they have it in for me.

Great plane, and the AICarriers and such just make it a better experience.

Enjoy it all!
Pat☺
