Just wondering if any one can get this airplane into the air. I always overheat the engine and it automatically shuts itself down. Any tips would be appreciated.

Ah, the YS-11. When this model first came out it caught a lot of people out like that; not flown it for a while, but it was always the port engine, as I recall. Best advice I can give is ****, you really need to follow their procedures closely; at the time I cam across these comments (from one of the AFG team) which was useful guidance:

"I was part of the AFG YS-11 design team (aside from flying real YS-11's). The AFG YS-11 is designed like the real plane. You CANNOT advance the throttles abruptly during takeoff or else you'll blow the engine. This is a characteristic of the real Rolls Royce Dart 543 engine.

You CANNOT turn off the autofeather in the YS-11, because that is an automatic feature. The "feathering" indication that you see when you veer to the left (or right) during the takeoff means that you've already "blown" the engine and it has feathered (that's exactly how it's supposed to work).

The way to do it is to advance the throttles s-l-o-w-l-y to slightly less than 35 psi torque. Let the engine parameters stabilize (meaning the needles stop fluctuating), then again s-l-o-w-l-y advance the throttles to the takeoff setting. Take note, you DO NOT advance the throttles to the absolute full forward position (another "blown" engine). This is how you do it in the real YS-11. There's a better description of the takeoff technique in the readme file."

Persevere, it is worth it. Happy flying.

I had YS-11 installed a few years ago and had a heck of a problem with it.

A few weeks ago I tried this again with a fresh download ( from Flightsim.com ) ......

New features: improved model with feathering prop blade animation and parking mode with streamers, wheel chocks, etc. Better VC with new night lighting, smooth gauge update rate, more clickable controls and VC window rain effects. This is a complete aircraft containing panel, sounds and effects. No previous version needed. Manual included. By Esa Kaihlanen et al / AFG.

This time the aircraft flies really well .

By the looks the panel has been upgraded ( or the gauges ) which seems to have improved things.

You still have to be careful with the engine handling though.

I really like stuff like blowing engines as it adds a bit of a challenge to flying.

If you want a more forgiving turboprop, try Calclassic's Cv-580. IIRC, you can still blow the engine in that one, but it takes some really, really reckless throttle handling.

The Dart engine used "fuel trim" gauges to check and lean or enrich the fuel mix to obtain optimal jet-pipe temp. The AFG one is rudimentary, but the Peter McKay-panelled HS748, Viscounts, AW650 Argosy and (for the Tyne side) CL-44 have not only the fuel trim gauge but an accessible trim chart or wheel to show the proper fuel trim for a chosen altitude/external temperature. It's a lot like juggling MAP and mixture in a piston engine. Starting on a Dart is usually done with the mix at 50%, and that is a good mix if you're unsure about the conditions.

I don't think I ever flew the newer version, but I always loved the original. A good Dart soundset is essential. I remember watching Piedmont's birds from the roof deck of the original GSO terminal when I was a kid. I can still hear those Darts in my mind!

Same here, but for me it was Austin Airways 748s out of CYTS.
