View Full Version : Aircraft.cfg mods for carrier ops?

Navy Chief
May 26th, 2013, 04:10
Way back in 2009, SOH member James Chams created/posted a AI Aircraft Configuration list that provided aircraft.cfg entries to allow cats/traps on aircraft carriers. Just wondered if that list was ever updated, or if a new one had been created?

I have several carrier-based aircraft that are not configured for carrier ops, and such a list would be most helpful!

Thanks, NC

Installation:
------------

Add these statements to your "Aircraft.Cfg" file to each respective aircraft to enable
them to Launch/Recover correctly from FSX Acceleration Carriers / AICarriers R2R,
Mr. Javier Fernandez's USS Nimitz and Eisenhower nuclear carriers packages,
Mr. Sylvain Parouty's PA Clemenceau (R 98) v2 French Aircraft Carrier, and any/all of
Flying Stations'HMS Victorious R38 - Early WWII & HMS Ark Royal IV Carrier(s).

Begin by opening the Aircraft.cfg file using Notepad and Scroll Down to the section
that begins with [TailHook]. Or, if NO [Tailhook] Section exists, then scroll to the
End-Of-The-File. Then, Add these statements to your file(s), save them, and finally
Launch FSX.

Enjoy! :)

P-47D Thunderbolt (ACCU-Sim)
----------------------------

NOTE: This is a Land-based aircraft which does NOT support a visual Tailhook or Launch bar elements
(i.e. the Launch Bar/Tailhook is NOT animated) and, therefore, did NOT come with Carrier settings.
These settings will enable these models to use these features. Also, If you extend your tailhook
or launch bar you won't visually see them so it may NOT visually look good to install it in those
varients unless you really want to. These settings WILL work for ALL their respective varients.

FYI: The catapult launch speeds exceeds the structure tolerance of such aircraft (This is NOT a fighter);
you make experience a crash (if your FSX Crash settings are ON) upon a Launch or Trap; and an engine
excessively high RPM after a catapult (especially the Accu-sim version). So, set Power (throttle) to
just above Idle, Then launch and allow the catapult to put her into flight. The use of FLAPS on this
aircraft and trimmed for take off is OK, BUT NOT with FULL (Throttle) Power.

IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you set aircraft ... BEFORE a catapult launch:-
1. Elevator Trim to Take-Off.
2. Lower FLAPS as desire for Take-off.
3. Set power (THROTTLE) to slightly above idle BEFORE the Launch and, ONLY upon attaining flight,
ADD Power. FULL (Throttle) Power upon Take-Off will exceed Engine RPM and can cause damage.

Landings, however, a much more difficult, with the aircraft needing to be flown precisely. But, they
may be done normally with or without FLAPS and DO make sure you lower the tailhook (even if you can't
see the tailhook come down).
These setting are the same on both versions (Accu-Sim'ed or not).

There is NO Tailhook simulated in this model's (.mdl) file and and its keystroke implementations is
married to visuals of intake/exhaust covers, chocks, and others. It looks weird to deploy your
tailhook only to see these; but the trap via the tailhook function works.

FYI: The catapult launch speeds exceeds the structure tolerance of such aircraft (This is NOT a fighter);
you make experience a crash (if your FSX Crash settings are ON) upon a Launch or Trap; and an
excessively high angle-up pitch attitude inducing a STALL after a catapult launch if, your FLAPS are
down and your aircraft is trimmed for take off with FULL (Throttle) Power.

IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you set aircraft ... BEFORE a catapult launch:-
1. Elevator Trim to neutral.
2. Raise FLAPS to the FULL UP position.
3. Set power (THROTTLE) to idle BEFORE the Launch and, ONLY upon attaining flight, ADD Power.
4. AFTER Launch you may have to put the YOKE (Joystick) full forward to PREVENT STALL and establish
level flight.

Landings may be done normally with or without FLAPS and DO make sure you lower the tailhook (even if
you can't see the tailhook come down).

Quest Kodiak
------------

NOTE: The Quest Kodiak is a civil aircraft which are land based ONLY and do NOT support a visual Tailhook
or Launch bar (i.e. the Launch Bar/Tailhook is NOT animated). If you extend your tailhook or launch
bar you won't visually see them so it may NOT visually look good to install it in those varients
unless you really want to. These settings WILL work for ALL their respective varients.

FYI: The catapult launch speeds exceeds the structure tolerance of such aircraft (This is NOT a fighter);
you make experience a crash (if your FSX Crash settings are ON) upon a Launch or Trap; and an
excessively high angle-up pitch attitude inducing a STALL after a catapult launch if, your FLAPS are
down and your aircraft is trimmed for take off with FULL (Throttle) Power.

Those are for the flyable models. The AI models will need a "wet" configuration as they do not use the same settings, basically using "super spoilers" for traps, and more thrust to simulate the cat launch, these models will do the same on shore runways as well. NC, there might be something for this already on the MAIW forums, they did put out a French Navy Rafale package that has the AI models out at sea. You will also need a AFD/AFCAD "under" the boat for the AI to land on, something that someone has already probably done.

Actually, it is the flyable models that I'd like the aircraft.cfg mods for. Take for example the Razbam A-7E; it will not cat/trap without mods to the cfg file. Knowing the changes for that would be quite helpful. Pete

Chief, get with Warhawk 1130 for anything doing with the Razbam A-7 seeing as he's put in lot's of hours in it. It should trap and launch out of the box unless your install went wrong.

I have launched and trapped the RAZBAM A-7. It' not easy but certainly the plane has that capability.
