View Full Version : Neoqb Fokker Dr.1 Paintkit

Hi all,

Would anyone happen to still have a copy of the paintkit for the Neoqb Fokker Dr.1, that you would be willing to send to me? I seem to recall that there was one when Neoqb hosted the aircraft, but since that site is no more, I can't seem to find the paintkit for it available anywhere else (though some good individual did upload the aircraft to a few different FS sites a while back, which was perfectly in allowance with the developer's rules/regulations regarding the distribution of the aircraft files, but I don't believe the paintkit was uploaded anywhere).

If anyone is in such a position, if you'd like, you can just pm me.

Thanks!

- John

Here are some results from the first-day's efforts. Thanks again OleBoy for sending along the paintkit to me!

I've got about 10 paint scheme ideas I'd like to do. Here's a work in progress on Lothar von Richthofen's aircraft.

Edit: Old images removed, see below. ; )

Thank you Matt and Pips. Its been a long-time favorite of mine too - I've always liked the combination of yellow/green/red on this aircraft.

I redid the fabric streaked paint, after having not been too pleased with my prior attempt. I found the last couple of small parts where I didn't know they were mapped, added the right color to them, and also added the stencils, so I think this one is finished. Once you know where everything is, it is a very enjoyable and very effective paint kit to work with.

The first seven repaints, all from the 'Flying Circus', will be released as a set sometime next week, which will allow you to recreate these scenes in FSX:

(http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/0/9/2/1355290.jpg)(With a lot of the streaked paint scheme showing on these aircraft, I'll be mindful to try and keep each one looking a bit different, so that no two have the exact same 'streaks'.)

I'm really looking forward to you work John. It is a real coincidence as I was actually looking for a paintkit for this model. And Google brought me to this thread! :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

The Dutch "Early bird foundation" has two Dr-1 replica's one built by the foundation (PH-DRI) powered with a Siemens radial engine and one replica built in the US powered by a 165 HP Warner radial engine (PH-EBF).

http://www.vroegevogels.org/en/fokker-dr1

The green/red one is currently on display in the Aviodrome museum. Chris "Eagleskinner" Brisland did a repaint depicting the blue one.

I was intending to do one of Manfred van Richthofen's aircraft, most likely one which isn't completely red. I assume it will be included in your release. If not, I would love to have a copy of your paint kit.

Cheers,
Huub

Thank you Dave, Mike, and Huub. As the case is with really good paintkits, about 85% or more of the actual texture work is purely provided by the artist that made the paintkit.

I'd be more than happy to send the paintkit to anyone who would like to have it, and I have just sent a copy to you Huub via PM. I know I'll be greatly looking forward to any and all repaints you may produce for this model!

Besides those seen in the couple of photos I posted (which are all examples owned by The Vintage Aviator, based in New Zealand), the only others I have had in mind are Mikael Carlson's, Pioneer Flight Museum's (Kingsbury, Texas), Grimes Field/Golden Age of Aviation Museum's (which is also painted as Lothar von Richthofen's aircraft, but has various differences than the example I've duplicated above), and my own recreation of the Waldo Pepper scheme. Though for any of these, I don't want to try and claim them.

Three more done, only three more to go to complete the "TVAL 7" (I should actually have them all completed and uploaded around Friday/Saturday).

Here is Eberhardt Mohnicke's aircraft:

Thank you Mike. Yes, I've been going through and doing each of the seven paint schemes that are applied to the replicas owned by filmmaker Peter Jackson/The Vintage Aviator, based in New Zealand (seen here: http://nzcivair.blogspot.com/2012/05/fokker-triplane-replicas-of-new-zealand_12.html). All of these schemes are historic (majority of them with documented pilots), of examples that were part of Jasta 11, "The Flying Circus". Once all seven are complete, they all will be uploaded as one combined set. I've been saving the easiest for last, and although I've got some other business to tend to tonight, I should have the final two completed within an hour or two and will start to get them put together for upload.

Here are some new screenshots of the latest example, with some changes again to the streaked-fabric. I've adjusted the colors and contrasts again, and I think I can be content enough to settle for them, and now I will just have to make the same changes to the previous repaints shown before (though I may lean them back to being a bit more brown).

Thank you Mike, Matt, and Huub, I appreciate it!

Here is a work in progress on Mikael Carlson's Fokker Dr.1 - which I believe is regarded as the most authentic reproduction flying (all original materials-construction (including the original types of metal and wood), original period instruments (the very few there are), and a 110 hp Le Rhone rotary engine). It also has a very authentic factory-type finish over-all.

I went back to square one on the fabric streaked paint, and tried to recreate the same general look/colors as seen on Mikael Carlson's example (for those wondering, the paint kit doesn't come with the fantastic streaked-fabric paint as seen in the textures that come with the Neoqb Dr.1). What you see is about five layers over the top of each other to try and get that look of the fabric paint. All that I believe I need to correct now is the color of the horizontal tail struts, a couple of small parts around the tail, and enlarge and re-position the stencils on the main wing struts.

This is not only my favorite of the replicas flying today, due to its fantastic originality, but also because of the pilot that flies it (one of my top 3 or so favorite pilots in the world). Not only is it probably the most authentic example flying today, but it is also flown more to its max capabilities than any other that I am aware of. Through Mikael Carlson's displays, you can really see what an aircraft of this type can do, through loops, rolls, and spins.

The aircraft is located in Sweden (along with the rest of Mikael Carlson's amazing collection of very authentic reproduction and original aircraft from the WWI and pre-WWI era), registered SE-XXZ, and has been displayed at several countries throughout Europe, including Germany and England, and has even displayed in Russia. (There is also a less-authentic example based in France that is finished in the same markings)

BTW, Huub, that is very interesting what you say about the painting you remember. For the formation I put together, I was inspired by the same brilliant formation that these aircraft fly in at the Classic Fighters air show held at Omaka, as seen in this video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iJpzsbsD2M

Here are some more shots, with the final updates added that I am aware of.

Any criticism would be great to hear. On my current display, the green looks dark and saturated enough, but on another it looks a bit washed out. The markings on this reproduction of Mikael Carlson's, is that of Johann Janzen's aircraft, 403/17, of Jasta 6, when based at Lien St. Amand, February 1918.

I've gone ahead and uploaded the Mikael Carlson Dr.I repaint. I found a few more things to correct and add since the last screenshots I posted. For instance, the center support struts for the upper wings are the dark green, rather than the light blue. I also added the stencils to the lower surfaces of the wings. A rather cool coincidence about this aircraft, is that the Wk. No., accurate to the specific example it is marked to represent, is 1987 (the year I was born).

...but as the title indicates it is a thread about the paintlkit, I thought you wouldn't mind that I used to thread to mention I made some use of the piantkit as well :running:

In August 1917 two prototypes of the Fokker tri-plane were delivered. The 102/17 went to Manfred von Richthofen and 103/17 was delivered to Werner Voss. Von Richthofen was not impressed, mainly because it was slower than the Albatross D.V it should replace and handed the aircraft over to Kurt Wolff. Although van Richthofen initially disliked the aircraft he made scored two victories with the 102/17. On 15 September Wolff was killed in this aircraft in a dogfight with Norman MacGregor.

Aircraft number 103/17 was flown by Werner Voss who was impressed by maneuverability of the aircraft and later convinced von Richthofen about the qualities of the aircraft. The "face" on the engine cover is based on the images on Japanese flighter kites, which Voss used to fly with his cousins in Krefeld. The aircraft was equipped with a French Le Rhône engine which was more reliable than the German Oberursel copy. Voss was killed in this aircraft on 23 September after a fight with six aces from RAF 56 squadron.

The aircraft were delivered in an overall turquoise finish with olive brush strokes over the upper surfaces. There is a lot of discussion about the colour of the engine and wheel covers. Some sources claim they were painted in the unit colour (yellow). However I haven't been able to find one single picture which supports this claim.

Cheers,
Huub

Huub, that repaint looks brilliant! I really do like your paintwork very much, the brush-stokes on the fabric turned out great. And what an interesting airframe - the history about it, and the colors and markings. Definitely looking forward to flying that one if you decide to upload it!

BTW, on the topic of Mikael Carlson and his Dr.I reproduction, and the experience he has with flying it, there is a rather interesting discussion (originated a few years ago) at the Rise of Flight forums, that starts with some interesting feedback from Mikael Carlson about flying and operating an authentic Le Rhone powered Dr.I: http://riseofflight.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=14008

And here are some interviews with Mikael Carlson, discussing the Dr.I:

Thanks for the links John. Very interesting read and the demonstration in the second video gives a fine impression of what this aircraft actually could do. It gives whole new definitions of STOL, steep turns and fast climb.

On of the nice things about repainting is that during your research you learn a lot about history. I never knew that all German aircraft manufactures used their own paint. Therefore the grayish light blue from Albatross is quite different than the turquoise Fokker used. Standards like RAL and RLM were not introduced yet.

With engines which develop less power than the ordinary family car, all the weight counts! Therefore on Fokker aircraft the olive paint was applied as thin as possible. The (later) production models had the upper surfaces not painted turquoise, but the olive brush strokes were applied on the bare fabric and afterwards coated with two layers of varnish. The later lozenge fabric was mainly invented to reduce weight as the ink of the printed pattern weighted less than paint.
This also explains a bit why Mikael Carlson's replica weights more than the original. Although I must admit not the full 80 Kilograms.... :isadizzy:

BTW, continuing off of what you mention, Huub, I was a bit surprised to find that there are as many original period photographs of Dr.I's as there are available.

For those that wonder about such things, only 320 Dr.I's were ever originally produced, and by the time of WWII only one of these of the original production was still surviving - which was serial no. 152/17, which had been one of the examples flown by Manfred von Richthofen, who had claimed three of his kills with that aircraft. Unfortunately, having been on display in a museum in Berlin, the aircraft was destroyed by the Allied bombing raids, and thus no originals remain today (save for a few parts and numerous pieces of fabric from originals (some have joked that there is so many surviving pieces that are claimed to have been from Richthofen's aircraft, that a complete example could be assembled from those pieces that are on display or in private collections around the world). Fokker did assemble one from existing parts they had in the 1930's, but that one too was destroyed during WWII while on display in Berlin. With only 320 having originally been built, it would be interesting to know in comparison the total number of the replicas which have been produced since WWI (probably quite a ways up there to matching that original production number).

Even in my small country there are already 2 flying replicas I know of, so you are most probably right when you think the number of replicas is close to the number of DR.Is originally built. For a period when photography was still something new an amazing amount of pictures were taken from the Fokker Dr.1.

Personally I think the aircraft would have been forgotten already a long time when the guy above hadn't died in one. Manfred von Richthofen was made a myth by propaganda already during his life time. After his death people only continued to add to the story until he had turned into something which was completely invented and had no nothing to do with the real person von Richthofen.

But ike Mikael Carson said in one of the interviews; when you build a replica it should be something people recognise. Well everybody has heard of the Red Baron, although most people think it is a guy with a big moustache and a pike on his helmet :icon_lol:.

The myth around the red Baron leads to weird things. Like all the bad guys in the movie Flyboys fly in a red Fokker, while in reality even most of the 7 (!) different DR.Is van Richthofen flew, were painted only partly red!

Fantasising about von Richthofen did also lead to the weird idea that some dogs can fly on top of their doghouse.......

You're welcome Matt!

Von Richthofen or the Red Baron is more or less synonym for a red Fokker Dr.1 "Driedecker". However van Richthofen scored only 19 from his 80 victories with a Fokker Dr.1. In most cases this Dr.1 was not even painted (overal) red. From the seven Fokker Dr.1s, from which it is know he has flown them, only two were painted completely red.

The best known one is of course the 425/17, the aircraft in which he scored his last two victories and in which was killed. The other one is the 152/17 which originally only had red struts, wheel covers, tail and upper wing, like most Dr.1s von Richthofen flew. Later the 152/17 was painted overall red like the 425/17.
When the 152/17 was on display in the Berlin Züghaus Museum is was completely red.

I have painted the 152/17 as it originally looked, which is very similar to most of the Fokker D.1s von Richthofen flew.

For those who want it: Its available in the file library.

Huub

Becker entered the Fliegertruppe in 1916. After serving as an observer on the Eastern Front, he was trained as a pilot and sent to the Western Front to fly two-seaters. In May 1917, he was assigned to Jasta 12 as a single-seat fighting pilot. Becker scored his first victory on 6 June 1917. In May 1918, Becker assumed command of Jasta 12, replacing Ewald Blumenbach. On the afternoon of 3 November 1918, he scored his final victory, shooting down a SPAD XIII east of Joncq. During this dogfight, he and his men were credited with the loss of five SPADs. Although Becker was recommended for the Blue Max, the Kaiser's abdication prevented him from receiving it.

With 30 years, Becker was an old pilot. Nearly all of his 23 victories were against "for those days" modern fighters. He survived the war, but there is not much more known about him. Strange, as we still know what his aircraft looked like in March 1918.....

the next are already finished

Vizefeldwebel Paul Bäumer was fascinated by flying. He survived the war with 43 victories. After the war he became a a dentist but went back to aviation. He even started his own aircraft company. In 1927 he was killed in a crash of one of his own aircraft.

The person Paul Bäumer in the book "All quiet at the Western front" is named after this pilot. Paul Bäumer was the dentist of the writer.

Using 7Zip, all I did was to double-click the .zip file so it shows the 2 Fokker.PSD files. Click on each .PSD and copy to desktop. Double-clicking each .PSD file makes them open in Photoshop.

I really like 7Zip compared to WinZip.
