For those of you like me who longed for some realistic trains to set on the tracks, Dan French has finally given us our wish. He has created a library of over 50 classic American late steam era and early diesel era trains including the liveries famous Daylight of Southern Pacific and the famed Super Chief Streamliner and the universally used and loved Pullman passenger cars as well as freight cars and a caboose. Thank you Dan, much appreciated, and there is even a LA late era streetcar, these are designed to work on both FS9 and FSX and with some work can be made to run in AI mode, tho we are still doing research and hope to release some add on packages to install them in major cities and ideal locations. With some re skinning they can work for just about any train of any era.

File Description:
This library contains over 50 models of locomotives (steam and diesel), freight cars, and heavyweight and streamline passenger cars to help you fill your tracks with rail equipment. Built in FS9 modelling, they should work in both FS2004 and FSX sceneries. Night lighting included on some engines and passenger cars. By Dan French.

A great help and contribution to the sim world. thank you Dan.

Believe Hama had made a pilotable train (or maybe two) for FS9, kept me out of mischief awhile looking for pics to make into 2d panel views (long since deleted along with FS9).
Also recall there was an AI one in a Bill Lyons' package.

Wasn't that long ago I saw some Quebec scenery for FSX (with a recommended Quebec mesh) that had some rail traffic.
This would be an interesting scenery development.
Wish I could remember more about the FSX scenery, didn't download it at the time, perhaps it's time for another look.
Someone already knows how to do it for FSX AI.

Yes Hama made some nice classic Japanese trains, and there have been trains on the tracks before, just not much in FSX for sure, and we hope this will help. We have experimented with pilotable versions and yes AI is possible, just have not had the time to set it up ourselves ..so hopefully those who can and do will share now that we have the library to work with. These are the first high quality models of these types that I know of, and it was very nice of Dan to make them for us. Adding the night lighting was a very nice touch as well. thanks for your sharing. Sorry we didnt get to see your panel views :)

what we need now, is a way to lay physical track in FSX. Is anyone working on that at the moment??

I made a yard engine and some military rolling stock for my FSX Hobbs USAAF base a few years back.

Tako San would you be willing to share them as small add on library? we could use some more stock. There are good RR track textures out there, but no infrastructure ie bridges etc other than the default ones. Not sure if they are coded to support moving AI along them. I know we can run in a straight line but i think there are problems with curves but all that needs skilled and loving hands to try at it. We included a streetcar for I hope to add streetcars to a set of WWII era sceneries we are planning for Japan and the West Coast of the US.

Well, I could make them into a library if I could remember how I made the other stuff into libraries in the first place! :isadizzy::pop4:

It's been a couple of years since I did that project and I was just looking at all the source files and can't work out how I made the libraries (or what tools I used to do it). I made a library for the military vehicles and a library for the static aircraft but didn't do the rolling stock for some reason.

If you like you can zip them up and send them to me and i will make a library for you...that is very kind. I peeked at your scenery, first class that one, i know the area but was not there then ..sure looks nice.

or just use the library Creator XML it works well.

I just downloaded LCXML and packaged up the rolling stock models and textures. Could you give the attached file a test for me to make sure it works. See the 'Read Me' for important info.

OK we will check it now, we are excited about this development project it is fun and a nice way to enhance the sim esp the historic sceneries that are starting to happen. I found Hama's old Japanese set of Steam trains and if i can get in touch with him in Japan we may be able to update and include them. He is a bit hard to find since his old site vanished. Anyone know how to reach him?

I think we have some RR infrastructure that someone made, will have to look thru the files.

testing that file set now.

UPDATE: nice engine good detail indeed, well they render but the textures are not showing up yet...will keep poking at it.

OK they load up fine, you just have to re name the texture folder, the draw call looks for TEXTURE and the folder was named TEXTURES

the stock looks fantastic, very detailed and very nice. Thanks so much for being wiling to share the assets for increasing the train stock for FSX, much appreciated.

Just thought I'd let you know that I would be very interested to see AI trains in fsx!

I often thought it was a pity the original developers left trains out altogether.
