ok..so thats not a big news item as it snows every winter on the sierra nevada mountains...now right now..8:38am its 31.7F with 13.2 mph winds,60% humidity...when i got up at 6am it was 26F...im at 1350 ft elevation..."the Motherload" area..about 12 miles from the gold discovery site of sutters mill at coloma..a 50 minute drive ( in clear dry conditions) from Donner summit ,which is 7.056 ft,the peaks around where that is measured are higher...
here is a paragraph from wiki about the snowfall on donner..:

Winter weather (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather) at Donner Pass can be brutal. Precipitation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precipitation_(meteorology)) averages 51.6 inches (131 cm) per year, much of which falls as snow.[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Pass#cite_note-17) At an average of 411.5 inches (10.45 m) per year, Donner Pass is one of the snowiest places in the United States. Four times since 1880 total snowfall at Donner Summit has exceeded 775 inches (19.7 m) and topped 800 inches (20 m) in both 1938 and 1953.[18] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Pass#cite_note-18) To take advantage of the heavy snows, the Boreal Ski Resort was built to the north. Ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Tahoe) area report an average of 300 to 500 inches (7.6 to 13 m) of snowfall per season.[19] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Pass#cite_note-19) Winds in the pass can also become extreme and wind gusts in excess of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) are common during winter storms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_storm). Winter temperatures in the area drop below zero several times each year; the all-time record low for California of −45 °F (−43 °C) was recorded at the Boca Reservoir (east of Truckee) in January 1937.
In the winter of 2010-11 over 700 inches (1,800 cm) had fallen as of May 23, 2011. Snow depth peaked in early April 2011 with over 250 inches (21 ft) of snow on the ground.
The winter of 1846-47 was especially severe, and this is generally cited as the single most important factor in the disaster of the Donner Party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Party).

my point to this rant is that tomorrow night..thursday ,12/20/2012,they expect 8 feet or 96 inches of snow in less than 12 hours .if you are at all into railfaning ..get the dvd "snow fighting on donner" its a great dvd (was a VHS tape origanlly),the Southern Pacific Donner pass track maintenance head..its accually called the "roseville sub"...roseville to truckee... the man in charge was known as "The Bear" his name is Jim Mahon...his wife Nola also worked for SP,it was her job to make sure the railcars were ID'd as the crossed the "hump" in the humpyard, she did it by "eye" for many many years too.....pretty tough to look at the reporting marks and write them down as the cars roll over the hump one after the other....anyway...jim is in the dvd i refered to alot..i know him through my mom and her friendship with nola and quilting, funny story....i went to the local model train shop in roseville a few years ago....my dad, myself, jim, and dads buddy ed were all together...i went in the store and grabbed a copy of trains magazine, and a couple others...the geeks at the counter were talking about "the bear" ( BTW i only knew him by his real name at this point),,,when i laid the magazines down..i looked at the copy on the counter, saw jim in the photograph.....asked..is that who you are talking about?.....these geeks all got kind of surley with me...like they were all put out by me butting in...one finally said yes...thats the bear.....i said..well jims out in the car waiting for me...someone said "thats nice, why you telling this us" realsmart alicky....i said...well thats the jim in my car..and pointed at the photo......those dinks RAN out the door and swarmed all over jim...made him get out and go into the trainstore and sigh autographs....he was/is like a king to them...lol.....cracked me up...

Here in Arizona we have already had two server snow storms within a week, I thought Arizona was a warm place, average temp. 38% over the past 5 days. Heck I live about as far south as you can get but high in the Huachuca Mountains.

THIS SUCKS!
