View Full Version : AIRBOSS lives on

My previous reports of AIRBOSS's imminent demise at the hands of Windows 7 have proved to be premature.

The AIRBOSS executables I've uploaded to SOH do not work in Windows 7 because they are 16-bit programs, which Win 7 is bigoted against. However - wonder of wonders - I have found a new 64-bit version of the Qbasic engine which does convert my old AIRBOSS files into shiny new 64-bit executables which appear to run without a hitch on my new Win 7 laptop. So, I suppose I'll be converting, testing, and putting together another upload this week. I'm not currently planning any changes other than the upgrade to the 64-bit version.

I don't know how many people use AIRBOSS to boost DCG performance, but those who do may be happy to know that the new, faster machines will still run the 64-bit version of it. As for myself, I like DCG, but I can't stand the air collisions the untweaked DCG causes with it's unfortunate air formations, and I need AI escorts for strike missions, which DCG does not provide without AIRBOSS tweaking.

If nothing else, I am happy that Qbasic itself hasn't bitten the dust, since Qbasic is the only programming tool I'm proficient with, and I wasn't really motivated enough to learn something else.

So. Every once in a while a day isn't a total bust. If only Microsoft hadn't messed up my internet security software with some infernal update which my IS software thinks is a trojan (an issue which still hasn't been resolved), today would have been a pretty good day.

Hurrah! I'm so glad - DCG lives on.

Much kudos for persevering with this

Forgot to mention, the upgraded executables will include a fix of a minor bug which worked it's evil when I fixed the air start bug. The bug's only effect was to cause bad coordinates to be displayed in the part of AIRBOSS that reports it's tweaks in the fighter missions. The bad coordinates didn't affect missions, but could be confusing.

Nothing else will change except the "bitness" of the executables, and the addition of some "dll" files the upgraded version of Qbasic needs to operate in a 64-bit environment.
