Vertigo Studios have released there latest master piece, The PT 17 Stearman. With Unpresidented feedback and rigorous in-house testing the Stearman finally takes to the skies.

The package comes with two variants, a civilian and the military variant.

On installation, the end user can choose between the HD version or the smaller texture size of 2048 for the less powered machines. Everything has been taken into consideration.

Product Description
Ever wanted to learn to fly a tail dragger or re-create your very own private airshow? now you can. Vertigos PT17 comes in 2 flavours, a Military variant and also a Airshow variant. The airshow variant has a slightly more powerful engine with the option to jettison smoke and re-create your own air display.

The PT17 was a conventional biplane of rugged construction with large, fixed tail-wheel undercarriage, and accommodation for the student and instructor in open cockpits in tandem. The radial engine was usually un-cowled, although some PT operators choose to cowl the engine which is beautifully displayed on our airshow model.

Introduction
The PT17 Stearman is a biplane used as a military trainer aircraft, of which at least 8,584 were built in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. It served as a primary trainer for the USAAF, the USN (as the NS & N2S), and with the RCAF as the Kaydet throughout World War II.

After the conflict was over, thousands of surplus aircraft were sold on the civil market. In the immediate post-war years they became popular as crop dusters, sports planes, and for aerobatic and wing walking use in airshows.

Tried out the N2S with one of Bruce's add-on paints downloadable from vstudio's website, (the ones that are "missing" from the package, but are in the cfg) and noticed that once in the air, the rudder activation becomes nearly non-existent. With the tailwheel on the ground, full movement is available. The movement dynamics in the air also reduce to near zero. Is this correct?? The rudder pedal movements are also reduced in the VC. I made sure the controls were unlocked. As soon as the tailwheel touches back down on landing, full movement is restored.:isadizzy: Using the rudder for anything in the air is useless, not even enough available for good coordinated turns. Other than this, I thought it is a very good aircraft.

Have not had a chance to fly the aerobatic model, yet, so don't know if this occurs with it.

I hesitated to buy this Stearman package because I have had a payware PT-17 for a few years. Stupid me, I don't remember where I got it (anybody got any ideas where I bought a Stearman about 3 or 4 years ago?) Anyway, I bought the VS model because I have all of their planes and they are all outstanding. This old girl is great!! It flys so nice and easy. The plane is incredibly beautiful. The VC is simple and perfect.
Is the actual PT this easy to fly? My father-in-law (Maj L.P.Dolan USAF Ret) learned how to fly during WWII in the PT-17. He says it was a "honey" of a plane...said if you can't fly the PT-17, you'll never be a pilot. I have crashed a few times, but never thought I was a pilot.
Anyway, get this plane, you will love it.

The other Sterman PT-17 is from Golden Age Simulation. Nice model but not equal to that of V.S.

This scheme was generally called "Recall". The recall scheme was used by the US Navy in the early forties when training aircraft had no radios, in the event of an emergency ie bad weather the recall plane went up so if the new pilots saw it they knew to return to base or any safe landing ground.

I'm really, REALLY enjoying the Stearman - two good looking models, a lot of fun to fly in either version, and some great paint schemes. Someone already mentioned there is a bit of looping in the supplied sounds. If it bugs you, you could try a freeware sound pack called strsnz.zip, which I originally got for Tim Conrad's WACO. If I was going to make one suggestion it would be to have the option of a turn coordinator on the rear (main) instrument panel, but taken all round this is great.

Is the actual PT this easy to fly?

I've been fortunate enough to have an opportunity to fly a real N2S-3. It was an experience I shall forever cherish! Indeed it is a delightfully easy aircraft to fly, at least once in the air. As with most taildraggers, the real drama manifests itself in takeoff & landing operations....but from my understanding, experienced tailwheel pilots (ie: NOT myself :icon_lol:) generally regard the Stearman as a very benign and forgiving aircraft in these regimes, at least in comparison to other taildraggers. My only prior experience has been on Cessna 150/152/172 and Piper Cherokee 180s while training for my PPL...and I personally think that once airborne, the Stearman is an easier and more stable aircraft to fly than the above. It's definitely 1000x more fun....that's for sure!

EDIT: Here's a much more detailed and entertaining pilot report of the Stearman, for those who are interested. A good read!

Thanks for the link. Nice to read one of Budd's PIREPs again. As he says, and as the president of the EAA says, who flies one all the time, they are supposed to be a handful to land; but I don't think FSX is capable of modelling the combination of tire grabbiness on pavement and high center of gravity behind the mains on taildraggers that makes them that way. I never hear of anyone ground looping their virtual planes. I know I haven't, and I've certainly done landings in the sim that would have me dragging wing tips in RL. So VS can be forgiven for inaccurate landing characteristics.

It's nice to have a good Stearman for FSX. The only thing that made me even look twice (but no more than twice) at Flight was that big beautiful yellow bird on the screenshots. This one is on my wish list. It would be nice to see some more videos of it, with sound this time.

Paintkit uses layer masks, which are not supported by older Elements versions, IIRC.

I wouldn't mind slapping a few layers of paint to this bird. The only problem is, that it's still out of my reach, as the web store does not accept direct CC payment.

A Scooby ? , one of those terms not in constant use over here in Quebec, but if it means dont have a clue i can help there , nobody told me about it , the models were in the same maxfile for long enough to have become intertwined , the mating produced a pontoon version and a duster , they will need to get their dna test done to be sure of the parts not being outside of the version in question.

yes I did...but I have a couple of issues.
1) the pilots goggles are not of clear material...more like Luke's blast shield
2) much more importantly - I cannot manually start the engine without the plane blasting off at full throttle...regardless of the throttle lever being in the 'closed' position...
it works fine with 'ctrl+E' auto start...but no matter what I do..manual start is a 5 second rodeo
3) the tail wheel 'strobe' effect - dunno what else to call it - the tail wheel hub texture is very reflective and it 'wobbles' or 'strobes'...needs a fixin'

the Stearman looks and flies beautifully and I can highly recommend the VS model to anyone who loves round engines and fabric wings

edit - I am using the 2048 texture set model as my rig is not 1A and I like to fly in moderate to poor weather and my FPS are not impacted at all (ie: great performance like Carenado and Alabeo)

edit - I am using the 2048 texture set model as my rig is not 1A and I like to fly in moderate to poor weather and my FPS are not impacted at all (ie: great performance like Carenado and Alabeo)

In response to 2)... Have you moved the mixture lever to rich? I tried a cold start and noticed that the mixture was at full lean. Having moved to rich, turned battery, fuel and mags on it started with no problems and at low rpm. The other possibility is that your default flight doesn't use a default plane?

Hope you sort it.

Hello Roger - yes mixture to full rich mags and batt on
per the manual and as soon as I hit the starter she jumps
like a spurred mule
I can use any other plane in my inventory and have no problem
but I have not tried deleting my saved flight to see if that works
-I'll have to try that this evening

On this aircraft the mags are on when the switch handle is at 'Both'. In other words, the long bit of the switch is sitting just below the 'Both' label. It caught me out to start with too until I realised that I'd been turning the mags off rather than on! Try that, if you haven't already, and see if that solves the start up issue.

Best,
Myles

well I've tried everything I can think of and I still cannot start the Stearman manually without it lurching and face planting

So I'll use the auto start method UFN

Judging by the paint requests I'm still getting for this, it's very popular plane.

Two latest requests, finished today;

U.S. Navy paint, which was seen in TV series JAG. Download here. (http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/3113-vertigo-studios-pt17-stearman-153/)

"Thunderbird Field" paint. Download here. (http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/3112-vertigo-studios-pt17-stearman-280/)

Thanks Barnes:salute:

Btw noticed that the Navy paint had strange yellow hue on the cowling, which shouldn't be there. That happens when you try to paint and spend quality time with your 4 year-old daughter at the same time. Impossible:icon_lol:

Anyway, I uploaded a corrected version.
