This is a fighter of the Netherlands developed just before World War II. The layout that has two engines arranged front and back in the body. Though the test was begun in May 1939, the low output of the engine and cooling the back engine became problems. The Netherlands surrendered after the invasion of the German army in May 1940, and development was discontinued. Only one prototype was destroyed afterwards or is said to have been confiscated by Germany to use as research material. By Kazunori Ito (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/main/review/ito/ito2.htm).

Haven't downloaded it yet but I thought I'd better let you know first.

Cheers,
Maarten

You beat me to the punch by two minutes. Downloading now but won't be able to take a good look at it until I get home from work tonight. Looks promising! :applause:

Nice surprise! :applause:

The model seems quite accurate, but the FDE and paint could use a bit of work.

I agree, the model seems very accurate. Evidently Kazunori tried to work up the piston engines
but ran into problems. He expressed considerable frustration in the "Readme".

Many thanks to Ito-san for a great model.

Yessir- another nice aircraft from Ito-san!

I was debating whether to work over his FDE files or splice in those from Payakan's D.23 that he made some years ago... it looks like I'll be better off working over Ito's files... we'll see what I come up with...

I thought it was interesting that I found 3 different paint schemes for this- yet only one aircraft was produced... hmmmmmm...

Well, it's out: Ito hates dynamics (hehe). What else is new? But the guy does great models, that's for sure. I worked on the dynamics (well....had some already 'configured' for push-pull engine (Junkers EF-112) so used those. Notice air file is 'pembroke'. Rob Peter to pay Paul. I like these FDEs. The sound can be piston or turbo prop. It has reverse thrust (ha!). I'm too good (hehe) .:sheep:

While it's true that Ito doesn't care for piston engined FDE's you gotta hand it to him that he actually tries, and you have to respect that (after all, FDE's are kind of a black art to most). His aircraft have been steadily improving over the years especially in the VC. Other from the FDE all this plane really needs is a BananaBob prop and a rockin' sound file. Preliminary research show that those engines are inverted air-cooled V-12's, like those engines in the DeHavilland Albatross or that Ranger V-something-or-other that was in the Bell XP-77. So, any ideas about the sound file?

At this point I 'Frankensteined' Payakan's D.XXIII FDE with Ito's contact points and lights. Not bad. Slow on acceleration, top end 256 KIAS at 1200' and absolutely vicious near stall speed. It's definitely a challenge to get airborne and to land. Otherwise it seems pretty benign.
Since I changed the FDE to a piston engined version I made some changes to the panel.cfg. Most of it was already in place; all I had to do was to comment out the turbine gauges and 'un-comment' out the piston gauges.
I also changed the pixel size to 1024,1024 to make the gauges clearer in the VC. Contact points may need some work or those are some flat tires.
BTW, how does one say 'Mixmaster' or 'Push-Me-Pull-You' in Dutch? I'm thinking those would be cool nicknames for this plane (Yeah I know the Cessna 337 goes by those names too)
Here's the modded panel.cfg:

Here's the panel config I set up for the 2D and VC panels using Mopar Mike's 4 Engine Luft gauge pack (available in the library...may be harder to find than it used to be...CFS2 gauges best place to look). This set up give the front and rear engines their own tach, manifold pressure and cylinder head temp gauges. No radio, ap or GPS stuff at this point....will set it up to reflect my personal taste...but left it out for you folks to set up to your personal tastes.

I've got several things going on right now including the moving of some archive files, but Ito's airplanes are always fun for me. I'll work my usual changes to get it into FSX (larger textures, different prop blur and redone VC). I do wish Ito would see his way clear to at least do what needs to be done to the prop disc so it doesn't knock out autogen in FSX. That's the only real drawback.

To make sharp turns (SLOW speeds REQUIRED) turn nose wheel all the way and 'Goose'
(Full On then IMEDIATELY Cut) the throttle while using 'Differential Braking'. Repeat as required
to complete turn. Using ANY amount of throttle will over-ride any braking so that won't work.

Climb to 8,000 meter: 14.3 Minutes

Practical Ceiling: 9,300 meter
Max altitude: 9,500 meter
Max altitude on one engine: 5,500 meter

Take off distance with a 2.5 meter/sec headwind: 200 meter
Take off distance with a 2.5 meter/sec headwind to a 15 meter altitude: 440 meter

All this official Fokker data, but I noticed that even in official documents there are slight differences. Only eleven flights were made with the prototype before the invasion.
Test pilot Gerben Sonderman described that the engine torque from the two engines wasn't a problem in flight, but on take off the left brake was used as the aicraft had a tendency to move to the right. Full left rudder was required once the speed built up. Aerobatics were never tried due to the high temps of the aft engine. Reliability was also an issue with the Sagitta's.

Besides his admission to hating FDEs, has anyone else taken him up on the offer further down in the readme file for the D.XXIII regarding his Bf-109G-6? He says he doesn't plan to release it to the public- just to those who e-mail him about it. Overall (model, FDE, VC) I think it's one of the best jobs he's ever done... Three models (clean, centerline tank, and tank plus gunpods), painted in Finnish colors...

I worked on the dynamics...

Hello Chuck,
Your flight dynamics are certainly better than my attempts. The D.XXIII is VERY fast
with all those horses so I toned down the power a bit. Ito-san has made an excellent
model of an airplane I very much admire. Your work gave me a very flyable model, thank
you.

Here is another cfg and air file that work very well. You must use both files together. The sound from the He-111-H6 also works well, I dont remember if it came with the model or made by Lawdog.

Did anyone find a better prop file?

I gave it a go with Terry's modded FDE. Still a little hot (333 KIAS at 2000') so I toned down the power and thrust scalars and set them to 1.00. Still takes off in a reasonable amount of space but the top end is only 283 KIAS at 1500'--pretty close to the speeds that Ferry found out.
I also found a BananaBob prop from a Bf109--not sure if completely accurate but it looks good.
As for the sound file, I settled with the default DeHavilland Comet. Engine-wise they are pretty similar--both are inverted and air cooled; the Walter Sagitta just has twice as many cylinders, like the Ranger V-770 but a bit bigger (According to German Wikipedia displacement is somewhere around 1120 cid, just slightly smaller than the Jumo 210 that powered early Bf109's)

John,
Appreciate your comments. It IS overpowered (3850 hp, and thrust=2.0) so it absolutely needed to be toned down. Actually in haste to upload did not set them back. Oh well. What I did not like was that it required +8.0 pitch trim just to fly level. Bogus! Among other things. Next time I'll use a bigger hammer (ha).

Terry's mods give the D.XXIII some nice handling both on the ground and in the air, but I agree that it's still a bit
hot.
Just floundering around, I have tried some changes to Terry's .cfg that seems closer in the speed department
at a maximum of about 280kts indicated between 2000' to 10,000'. At idle, the throttle must be advanced slightly.
So far I have been unable to find correct starter torque value.

Using ACM, I was able to get the flight model lined up with the visual model...meaning the wings are now programmed to be where the wings on the plane actually are...and not 6 feet back. The tail is now where the tail of the plane is, not 10 feet behind the plane. This change really made the Fokker D.XXIII much more flyable.

Hey OBIO,
Thank you for the geometry changes, handling is much improved.

The following changes from my previous mods of Terry's mods give
the airplane an maximum indicated airspeed of 286 kts (329mph)
at 6000'. Fairly close to the published top speed of 326mph.

[piston_engine]
power_scalar=1.18

[propeller]
thrust_scalar=1.18

You cant upload a zip file therefore the use of the TXT extender. Just delete the .TXT then unzip.

One small tip / request would be to use .bbb or something like that instead of .txt to avoid the issues some W7 / Firefox users have with the added extension.
Depending on the system settings it is nearly impossible to tell Windows that the file is really not a text document. You can change the name....but the extension you really want to get rid off is not
accessible.

Cheers

Tried the modded FDE file with Terry's as a base, OBIO's geometry and Hurricane 91's detail changes. Not bad. Not bad at all. My only gripe (if you can call it that) is that the acceleration seems a bit...spirited. 0-60 kts in about 4 seconds? I mean, that's supercar territory. Acceleration tapers off dramatically after 200 kts but I'm not sure that a plane that was considered underpowered could get up and at 'em that quick. Maybe we should tweak the weight?
Anyway, a couple of screenies (using that BananaBob 109 prop and default Comet sounds)...

:icon_lol:
Yes, I noticed that. I will try Terry's .cfg without my changes and see if I can figure out what may be the cause. Please keep
in mind that I do not have a good understanding of FS flight dynamics, just tinker and cross my fingers. But I have fun and
sometimes even learn something (if only I could remember what it was).

I thought it a little hot also but the top end seemed about right. I dont really know how to change the bottom end without affecting the top.
For my own use I simply keep the throttle out of the firewall at roll out.

If you have Nicks propwash effects, I added them to the cfg file. Just add this to the last VCOCKPIT header in panel cfg. gauge00=nn-gauges!MultiPropDustFXcontrol.xml, 0,0

It looks like I'm not the only one with throttle questions...

I made my FDE files by splicing in the piston engine parameters into the air and config files, then plugging in geometry values that I found that were the same as Ferry's info. I also calculated values for areas and locations based on a 3-view, and determining where Ito's datum is located. Between that and tweaking contact points, I was happy with the result for the most part. BUT....

I also noticed that she bolts out of the gate pretty quickly. I could have sworn that there was a parameter somewhere in the air file that controlled throttle response, which should tame that characteristic down- but I can't find it or remember it.

Also, my best airspeed seems to be down on the deck (yes, I'm watching true airspeed, not indicated). I set the power to deliver an airspeed of about 290 mph at low altitude. At that power setting, my airspeed only falls off as my altitude increases, where I was expecting the airspeed to peak somewhere around its 'service altitude' of approx. 4km. before falling off as I approach the 9.3km ceiling, which somehow I've managed to maintain fairly closely.

I currently don't have supercharging enabled, but at this point I may try it as a workaround to more closely matching the power output at altitude.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks- Mike

...I currently don't have supercharging enabled, but at this point I may try it as a workaround to more closely matching the power output at altitude...

From what limited research I did into the Walter Sagitta engine (German Wikipedia) the stats there implied there was at least a single stage supercharger; there was a line that roughly translated to blower ratio (it was around 8:1), so I would say it's a safe bet there was a supercharger on this engine. As for critical altitude I'd put that around 4500 meters (about 14,750 feet) since that was where it was making the most power at the highest altitude which logically would give one the fastest speed.
Hope this helps. :kilroy:

Ferry_vO
June 14th, 2012, 07:49
According to the German Wiki (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Sagitta) the Sagitta did have a compressor with a critical altitude of 2,000 meters. Note that the Wiki discusses the 1RC, while the D.XXIII had two 1SR's.
Strangely no mention in the book about superchargers or turbo's..

mikezola
June 14th, 2012, 17:48
Now that makes more sense! I started with a critical altitude of about 14,000 ft, and although I began to get the increased speed at altitude I was looking for, the ceiling was still way too high- even after lowering the critical alt. to 9000 ft. I could still attain a 39,000 ft. ceiling. I'll get it yet...

Thanks for the info! -Mike Z.

I think I have it pretty close to the specs- here they are for anyone inclined to try them out...

Besides the performance specs and geometry, contact points and scrape points have been tweaked and augmented- she'll belly-land if need be. I also found out the answer to something I found while looking at paint schemes online- the insignia and number Ito painted on this plane was applied to the prototype in June 1940- previously it had the number 'X-4' instead of the triangles, stripes, and number.

Enjoy! -Mike

yeah i think it only ever wore those 2 schemes 'X-4' and '998'...

The first paint was the mock up model, in camo colours only. During the Paris show the rudders had the rudders painted like the Dutch flag; red, white and blue. No further markings.
Next was the 'X-4' which had the camo scheme with the white X-4 markings on booms and wings.
The '998' had a camo base with '998' on the booms and the white stripes with black edges on the orange rudders (Outside only) and wingtips. I have found no photos that suggest the aircraft had the orange triangles like Ito painted.

Double checked my book: by the time the mock up arrived in Paris Both sides of the rudders had the Dutch flag painted on it, on the outsides it had the Fokker logo on the fin in front of the white part, with presumably "D.XXIII" below it, but I can't quite see that clearly. The propellors had what appeared to be a natural metal colour on the outside and black on the insides. X-4 had two dark (Brown?) spinners, but 889 appears to have a much lighter colour spinner in the rear.

67537
I'll grant you that it's not the best view, but look on the upper surface of the port wing and I think you'll see the lower half of the triangle...
Another picture they had answers the discussion about supercharging:

Sure looks like a little blower to me, with an intake in the leading edge...

What do you all think?

Ferry_vO
June 15th, 2012, 14:24
It is hard to tell, and photos of the 889 are very rare, but I have the same photo as mike but bigger (And for some reason in reverse) and I don't see it as a triangle. The orange triangles had the straight edge on the leading edge of the wing and the point towards the trailing edge. And if you compare one side of the wing to the other it appears they each point in a different direction.
Maybe it only had a triangle on the left wing, there's a shadow in the photo or the camo had a darker outline aorund the brown and green? Hard to tell from those few photos, almost all taken from that angle.

As for Mike's second photo: It's not a supercharger or turbo, but a bullet transportation device! To save space Fokker designed this system where the rounds are fed through the wing standing upright before being tilted and fed into the guns in the boom. Quite complex and I don't know if it was ever tested.

Sweet Matt! :applause:

The gunsight was never fitted to the prototype, only to the mock up it seems. One thing that's missing though is a steel bar that ran across the engine outlet just below the windscreen on the right side of the prototype. (Left side too maybe, but very photos survive of that side of the aircraft..). To prevent the pilot from getting chopped up by the rear prop he would have to climb out of the cockpit (In case of emergency) and use this bar to climb down so he could get out of reach of that prop!

I got MikeZola's air and cfg files working; turns out I had to set up the folder where the files went so it would show extensions. At that point it was cake.
All in all the files are pretty good but still a bit hot in the initial acceleration--I feel like I could take on a Bugatti Veryon on the runway. Acceleration still falls off dramatically after 150-175 kts and that's not bad. Top end is pretty close to what the real thing could do--somewhere around 280 kts--and that is faster than the aforementioned Veryon ;)
I did put on differential braking to help with maneuvering on the tarmac

First, thank you Ferry- I never would have guessed that photo was actually showing a feeding mechanism for the machine gun... if they tested it, that would have had to be interesting...

Falcon- enter a pressure into the hydraulics section of aircraft.cfg and the flaps will work (Ito's left that out before)...

Matt- those paint jobs look superb! Speaking of what-if schemes, did you notice the decal kits for models of this thing that offer KNIL and captured Japanese markings?

Drzook- If you like the Gustav out of the box, go into aircraft.cfg, edit the piston engine section to bring it more in line to DB 605 specs ( for some reason, it's a little de-tuned compared to other 109's I looked at), and add a flight tuning section so you can increase aileron and elevator effectiveness-
the result flies as nice as any 109 available!

Thanks Mike. . .I didn't post this, but I did get it working and I believe it was after I installed one of the tweaks posted here. I did a "what-if" scheme of my own using a "splinter camo" pattern. Probably not correct, but no one else will see it "in-sim" except me, soooooo, lol. It is for FSX so it utilizes the high-res capabilities of FSX (4096x4096) and "dds-dxt5". A shame Ito doesn't allow anything except 256 color for his textures. Keeps a lot of really nice resolution liveries from going public.

Thanks Mike, on the prop problem in FSX. . . .I just ignore it, lol. Nothing can be done about it as it's in the model and Ito isn't inclined to change the way he does that so I just try not to let it bother me too much, lol. I don't spend a lot of time outside the VC so I rarely see the problem all that much anyway.

Also spruced up the VC a bit as well:

This progress got me inspired to do some "scratch" bezels... that can be used for either mlx textures... or 2D panels...
I can make them available in dds, bmp, extended bmp or whatever format to spruce up either 2d or Vc panels...
just let me know...
by the way... I downloaded the aircraft from flighsim.com but like I stated before... either I am blind or there is no
VC files in it... just the old Ito style rudimentary 2D panel...

That VC would be nice to have for Fs9 as well! I bumped up the gauge resolution from 512 to 1024 but of course the original turboprop instruments are still there.

For sounds I'm using Lawdog2360's Westland Whirlwind sounds. The RR Peregrines in that aircraft are watercooled and more powerful than the Sagitta, but so far I haven't found anything for an inverted, aircooled V12.

About two weeks after the German invasion a group of Germans from the RLM visited the Fokker factory with a special interest in the D.XXIII mainly because of the nose wheel landing gear and the push/pull prop setup (Maybe it's the father of the Do-335..?). Fokker was ordered to repair the D.XXIII, because it had suffered some shrapnel damage during the bombing of Schiphol, as the Germans intended to bring it to Rechlin for testing. Fokker did sent a bill to Germany but never got a response, so the D.XXIII was stored, and later scrapped (Somewhere in '42 or early '43.). Rumours that the Germans flew the D.XXIII aren't true.

Another interesting story: Bob Williams, Cessna's test pilot, commented in a Dutch newspaper in 1967 that the 337 Super Skymaster reminded him of the D.XXIII!
Typically the 337 initially had the same rear engine cooling problems as the D.XXIII had...

I would think a National Air Races scheme from 1939 or so would be cool. The winner of the Bendix that year was flying a civilianized P-35; I think the Fokker D.XXIII would give it a run for its money. Fighter planes from other countries was nothing new either; after all Poland had a P.6 at the 1931 NAR.

Milton,

As a serious response to your question about compressing gear, I don't think Mr. Ito modeled the gear struts to compress. When I tried it on the nose gear the wheel simply sunk into the runway instead of compressing the strut. What's your opinion?

OBIO
June 17th, 2012, 09:05

I agree with Terry....Ito simply did not animate the gear for compression. I tried adjusting the values and all I ended up with were tires that sank into the runway.

I have packaged the VC in several options that I hope will allow everyone to use it. As I mentioned before. . .I don't know what this will look like in FS9 as it was reduced 50% for one version and 25% of the original size for the other version. If you find it usable great, if not. . .dump it, it won't bother me at all.

If you set your view up close (30 to 35 feet) then if you take off on a very low angle incline you can see the wheel struts dropping down (the front much more than the back). When you land (gently) the struts compress all the way and not recovering. (They were acting like the shock on 18 year my old Ranger, old and wore out.) I don't know if it matters but for reference I'm using Terry's FDE with Obios updates.

Remember that the value/position of the ref datum in aircraft cfg must be taken into account when you tweak the cnt pts. If you take the cnt pts from my FDEs and add it to Ito's (or anyone's else) FDEs you must make allowances for the DIFFERENCE in 'ref datum position' in (Weight & Balance) section. If you don't, then yes, the wheels might be 'sunk' into the ground. Change the compression ratio and again, the wheels might be sunk. It's all 'inter-related' and an adjustment to ref datum, or compression ratio, or wheel postion MIGHT require you to make adjustments to the cnt pts values for longitudial position, and/or vertical position. The 'trial & error' that follows has always been part of the game. The 'trick' is knowing what to move, and which way.

Yea, there have been a few things loaded but I don't know how long they were in the pipeline before making it. Maybe Rami's got a backlog due to the archive move and getting all that taken care of. Otherwise we could see them on flightsim.com before they show up here.

Rami said that he was limiting his moderating of new files to 200 per day (after doing several 300+ file days). We got through the 4700 file moves (plus several hundred FS8 files) in roughly 10 days thanks to the volunteers who helped. Today marks day 18 for him so roughly 3600 files he has moderated and 1100 left to go. For those of us who were doing the library moves investing 1.5 and up to 8 hours per day, we understand the commitment it takes to get through this effort. The files will come in due time. Thanks for understanding. :wavey:

It is really a pity that the Great Ito is so set in his ways about some things... as well as others... there is a really nice model of the Dragon Rapide... that adolesces of the same
peculiarity... there is spar in the middle of the fuselage (black jagged line) that really renders any "realistic" painting approach impossible...
and while on the subject... it would really be a nice thing if all designers decided to label maps so repainters can do an apt job...
I am repainting a Marting Mercator that DOES NOT have the center area or the wings or the fuselage mapped... see below
