Think you already noticed our small project
Manfred Jahn, Hans-Joerg Naegele, Alexander Metzger and me (Daniel Furnkas) are working on a freeware Basler BT-67 for FSX.
We started in June 2011, so nearly one year passed since then.

Think we'll be finished soon, no release date yet!

Some preview pictures:

After after watching Frozen Planet, I was wondering how this was going. It looks great!

The funny thing about all the latest TV shows is how they use reciprocating engine sounds for turboprops in flight. It always makes me think of the movie "Airplane."

I'm definitely looking forward to flying this around Antarctica, among other places. Check Avon Brochure (https://www.ladysavings.com/publix-weekly-ad/?avon/) and Builders Warehouse Specials (https://www.ladysavings.com/publix-weekly-ad/?builders-warehouse/).

Thanks for the preview.

Hello guys,

this project really caught my attention right away! A BT-67 is exactly the kind of aircraft we could need at Alaskan Winds VA, where I am active. So, will there be a paintkit for this aircraft? Would be really nice to have layered *.psd textures to create your own repaints for this bird.

Well, as a yardstick, my framerates for Manfreds Dakota were identical for the default DC-3, so I scraped the default DC-3's and replaced them with Manfreds C-47's. had to leave the default titles and what not so the AI traffic didn't get frakked up, but thats what the thumbnails are for. Works like a charm, and I've some GOOD C-47s for AI.

PZL Belfegor
July 5th, 2012, 09:33
Thank you, it's very neat rendition of BT-67, the ambient shadows in VC certainly add to atmosphere! I noticed two small bugs, the propeller 2 RPM gauge shows propeller 1 RPM (easy to fix in .xml) and the landing lights beam changes direction depending on bank - maybe a glitch with attach points?

mjahn
July 5th, 2012, 10:58
Thank you, you are right and very well spotted. Bug #1 either escaped us or we introduced it late in the proceedings, bug #2 we did notice but don't have an explanation for yet. I actually voted for keeping it as it looks as if the pilot swivels the lights to see where he is going.

PZL Belfegor
July 5th, 2012, 11:20
Thanks for the answer! At first I thought the lights were pulsating (some planes employ that as it is said to increase their visibility and even scare birds away), but then I noticed connection with plane bank. Unfortunately, this sometimes results in impossible angle like on the screenshot:
http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/8492/wai5db2tmp.jpg
One way to fix is to use the effect as standard light (aircraft.cfg entry) - it stays aligned forward, but looks a bit different than the effect attached in model (rightmost on the picture):
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/2944/waideftmp.png
I'd like to take the opportunity to compliment you and your team on the manual and system simulation including those used in case of failure - hardly ever freeware plane features those, great job!

Any ideas about a free soundset?I already had Bill Shultz's CV-580 soundset installed, so that's what I'm using. Tweaking the volume(s) in Options/Settings/Sounds gives me what I want.
They aren't correct for the PT6 engines, but, I really like their lower "note" a lot better than the available defaults.

"FS2002/FS2004 Allison T-56 Engine Sounds", 580sound.zip @flightsim,
and the update; "T-56 Allison Turboprop Sound Update for L-188 Electra, CV-580 and P-3 Aircraft", t56_sound_update_cielo.zip @ Avsim.

There are other soundsets proffered in the BT-67 thread at Avsim: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/378810-basler-bt-67-turbo-conversion-dc-3-released/page__st__25 ...Don

For sounds I'm using the "dehavilland_dhc6_twin_otter_the_real_deal.zip" by Christoffer Petersen, found at Avsim.com. Nice sounds, slightly 'heavier' than the MS default sounds.

And while everybody seems to like the cold, I found one in a slightly warmer climate:

I did something similar.
I have the Aerosoft Twotter.
For a quick fix, I just used the sound.cfg file from the 'Aerosoft Twin Otter 300 modern' folder.
It's already aliased to the main sound folder for the Aerosoft Twin Otter.
Simple cut and paste.

If this has been reported elsewhere, my apologies, I don't go to many other forums.

This is a very minor issue that doesn't bother me in the least.
Just thought I would pass the bug on.

Noticed last night that when I turned on the panel lights, the graphics for the fuel transfer panel got a little 'wonky'.
All of the links lit up and covered over some of the buttons and switches, as in the pic below.

We had one day access to C-GAWI, and came back with 500+ pictures. CGAWI's panel is plastered over with gauges, ours is a rough approximation, as are other parts, too (overhead). We'll be happy to consider update options, have a sizeable list already, this'll be one of them...

A really good product here, but, I can't believe a real world airplane had an instrument panel in that configuration. First, having the bendix/king radios and the Garmins is a lot of redundancy. Using the panel for IFR operations in this configuration is a bit challenging. The HSI should be below the ADI, the VSI below the altimeter, the turn and bank below the ASI and replace the #2 glideslope indicator with the radio altimeter. I really have to question why the need for a suction gauge with those PT-6's providing all the power you need to run all the avionics you need. You don't see King Airs with suction gauges. If you have DME indicated above the ADI and on the Garmin, why the need for another DME in the radio stack? An addition of an altitude alerter would be nice. Again I would like to stress that this is a really good model, better than most payware and this criticism is meant to be constructive in nature. I have a lot of real world experience with this sort of stuff and would be glad to help with any changes. EDIT: Just had a quick look at C-GAWI's instrument panel on airliners.net and that is a really good looking panel more in line with what you would expect in an aircraft.

Hello guys,

first of all let me say that I was really looking forward to this plane! :) I think it's a great addition to our virtual hangars. However, I think that the rudder could be a little more effective. When flying turns, the turn coordinator shows that more and more rudder input is needed the longer the turn lasts. That is not realistic. Second, if you try a side-slip, the rudder becomes less effective the more time passes by. Not realistic either. Would be great to have this fixed in a future update or something :)

Best regards,
Markus

Let me congratulate the developers for a fine job for this freeware aircraft. Thank you very much.

I am having one discrepancy, though. I have installed both the BT-67 Base pack and the gauge/texture update files.

When flying in the VC view with the autopilot engaged, the Heading Select button on the right of the HSI only turns counterclockwise. Thus I can only turn the aircraft to the left when changing the heading. A right turn is a 180 degree PLUS turn -- a long way around. It did this with only the Base Pack installed so the update was not involved.

Is this situation occurring with anyone else ??

That panel layout looks good. Maybe the only change I'd suggest would be to swap the turn coordinator with the RMI to set up a better scan for instrument flying.

Having said that, I don't have any problem with the panel as it is now. I can't begin to count the number of planes I've flown over the years with non standard layouts. Makes it a little harder to hand fly on instruments, but it's just the way it is sometimes with airplanes that work for a living.

I am so impressed with this plane and the quality of the work.

Cheers,

I already had Bill Shultz's CV-580 soundset installed, so that's what I'm using.

I also use the CV-580 soundset. look for cv-580-sound.zip @ flightsim.com.
This particular soundset works convincing for me.

It looks good, the turn indicator is in a different spot than in usual basic six, but it's how it is in real plane (example of such configuration here (http://www.airliners.net/photo/Guatemala---Air/Douglas-%28Basler%29-BT-67/1707490/L/&sid=554abd3bc5d54d80a0357997c5bcd502)). I saw you post in Avsim thread, so I won't repeat the suggestion about fuel flow meters ;) May I add "flat" GPS stack option to the "would be nice" list? It doesn't require separate models (animation hiding knobs and buttons should suffice) and it would allow to place custom avionics like different GPS or weather radar by users. That's merely a suggestion, by no way request - you have already done enough for simulation enthusiasts ;)

this is a great aircraft , something I've been waiting for. thanks to the developers for this gift to the community, and as previous posters have said ...it is payware quality. though i do have one problem with it , when i go to full power ..say on takeoff ..the throttle sticks at full power even if i reduce the power after takeoff .it takes maybe a minute for the throttle to respond and the power to come off ....sometimes it doesn't happen at full power but at medium power settings. this can for me make take offs and landings difficult. anyone else having this problem ?

I've also saw many pictures on the previous pages of this forum off repaints for the aircraft ...do you get em with the pack ?? are they coming soon ??? ..one i saw was the US forestry service ....is this available ???

I don't mind the non standard panel, I think it gives it character and a nod to it's vintage DC-3 lineage. Like Steve says, a lot of planes flying today still have a non standard arrangment. I don't think it was really until the mid-late 60s that instrument panels...at least in GA birds, really started having the standardized '6 pack'

This Basler panel reminds me of the MAAM DDA DC-3 project they did long long ago for FS2000. It was modern looking in color but the instruments were in a non standard arrangment.

A good alternative sound is from the old Iris PC-9/AT-6 package which is now freeware. The blade config between the two engine sounds may be different in real life but these sounds are very close as the PT6 and blade config on the BT-67 are quite high pitched. Having seen a few BT-67's in flight yes it does sound very close to a Shorts 360 and also not unlike a Starship or Avanti. If you decide to use these sounds, you'll probably want to edit out the O2 mask sound or you can use this Silent Wave sound(posted below) in place of the original Mask.wav to kill that breathing sound.

i just hade a weird engine bug where the engines didnt power to idle on landing it stay full power did a Engine shutoff and restart then it started to work correctly again :kilroy:

I encountered that a few times myself but not every flight. It seems to get stuck at full throttle at times and even hitting F1 once or in rapid succession doesn't free it. Eventually after 20 to 30 seconds it will unfreeze and respond to throttle movements again. I also noticed that the latter 1/3 of throttling up(response) seems out of scale(uneven) in proportion to the first 2/3rds of throttle movement/response. It's a little difficult to articulate higher power settings due to this. Very little throttle movement on my X52 throttle causes major changes at high rpm/torque ranges. It seems to advance to high power(rpm/torque) very quickly but is slow to retard. Setting the power feels like try to balance the throttle on a fulcrum point at high ranges.

(Post Re-Test Edit) I found that if you advance the power to where the torque is no more than 90 to 95%, there is no issue with the throttle sticking. That only seems to occur at max torque/engine rpm. With a little tweaking to the gauge, that should clear the problem as well as smooth out the other minor issues mentioned above.

I'm going to take a stab at The South African ones (C-47TP we know, but meh) and a buffalo Airways one as a giggle.... That is if cheesestrike doesn't nab them first.

Biggest challenge is removing the paintscheme from the textures, as there's no kit, or blank, so its a pain in the bum, but managable. I've got clean engines, and wings, the fuselage is requiring some 'plastering' using the c47 as a skin donor....

Depends on what is "any circumstance". They should be on by default when you start with a new flight (not a loaded flight, often difficult to anticipate what is saved with a saved flight). Green indicates STBY pumps are on - are they in your case?

expat
July 12th, 2012, 02:54
I am having similar issues with fuel pumps and problems not starting generally. I am usually starting from a saved default flight: e.g. the C172 with all the switches set the right way. Sometimes props move but can't get them to light (condition levers and ignition switches in the right places); other times the props just won't budge at all. Sometimes re-loading the a/c fixes it, but not always. This is certainly not a criticism as I find turboprops - among my favorites - real pigs generally to start in FS!

b/t/w - been clocking miles recently in your wonderful Starliner - never get tired of any of your family of Connies .. :salute:

It may be my misinterpretation of the manual (it says check lights green). Yes, the standby pump lights do go green when they turn on. The main pump ones, however, do not. They do go red when I turn them off.

But the pumps work and I can start the aircraft from cold and dark with no issues whatsoever, so not a big deal. (not even sure they're supposed to turn green anymore :icon_lol:)

What tickled me even more was that not even 24 hours later it was added to the FSEconmey data base for use with that wonderful addon. I quickly picked on up and have been flying her ever since then. Great work guys, I look forward to when all the repaint are done by Cheesy and hope that there will be a paintkit coming as well :).

The work others and myself (not posted here) have done, has been by 'reverse engineering' paint schemes to create a basic template.

The panel layout is changed. It's more in terms of what one would expect, but the new indicated airspeed gauge only goes up to 200 knots and is capped at 170, which doesn't make much sense, considering the old one was much more suitable.

Edit: Apparently, it's the same gauge as on the actual Basler, so plus one for realism. Go figure...

I've been tempted to make some smart remarks about how turbo props on a DC-3 is a sin, or some such, but this is such a fantastic plane I shant go there! :) The VC is beautiful, and she's such a joy to fly. Love this ship! Now I guess I have to adjust the trailing arms, or sway bars, or whatever it is that keeps my skis from dragging the pavement when I land on a hard runway with the things screwed on. Nice effects though!

Don't kill yourself with that. Skis will normally drag the ground. I like the spark effect, but it's probably a little overdone. Buddy of mine that flew a ski equipped plane said they do drag and make a hell of a racket.

This is a wonderful model, and has gotten me to add a complete new profile to my CH yoke for twin turboprop.

There's a teflon bar at the bottom end of the ski which creates those sparks

Maybe you need to have HD textures enabled in fsx.cfg file?
