I'm sure a lot of you have seen this on the news last night . Some pretty hefty fines , suspensions and sanctions . Last night on CBS Evening news , CBS Sports's Jim Brown was talking about how they interviewed several players , owners throughout the NFL and they were all for it and it was long over due . I'm sure a lot of you are thinking , this is the only team(Saints) they have caught so far and there is probably more teams that were involved in this "Bounty" fiasco and you are probably right . The months ahead , I'm sure , will be interesting to see how this unfolds . If anybody finds a more detailed or better article or video segment , post it for us . It's probably happened in years past in the NFL's history and we just didn't know about it .

To be honest the NFL hit them a lot harder than I was expecting.
More for PR and PC than anything else.
Players are still going to get their legs broken knees boinked and get knocked out.
Now why it's OK for the NFL tp pay them for it but not their fellow players is anyones guess.

If Sean Peyton were not an NFL coach, and he paid his employees to "take out" a competitor's employees, he would be in jail and headed for prison. If you ask me he and the Saints have gotten off easy.

It's NOT just a game. It's humans committing assault and battery. For cash money.

ABSOLUTELY!

I don't care what game it is; when you try to maliciously injure someone in the guise of 'competition and the emotions of the game', you're nothing more than a thug.

Getting paid for it; you're an enforcer, employed to commit assault with intent to injure and maim.

Great example of 'sportsmanship' to show to all the kids out there, huh?

The penalty should have been worse.

Vin,

You're right about the game changing from the 'old days', but it's the ATTITUDE nowadays!

It's instilled in kids by coaches from inter mural on up. "Stick him hard; make sure he doesn't get up!" and stuff like that.

Then you have like I said, the 'enforcers'... guys who aim for vulnerable spots like knees, leading with the helmet first, etc.

Don't get me wrong... I played soccer from 6 yrs. old up to high school, then I switched to football. Soccer was rough, just like rugby
or the neighborhood tackle game on the weekends. I knew guys who played borderline dirty in both sports; I didn't respect them one
bit, and made sure they knew it.

I played hard, hit hard, and got a lot of cuts and bruises for my efforts. But I body tackled, always aiming for the waist up, never below
the belt and/ or the knees. Never from behind, and never pile tackled. You can get hurt that way!

http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/disgust/t9406.gif (http://yoursmiles.org/t-disgust.php)

Then they are ALL thugs. I have to differ with your opinion. If it were your boys in orange, you might have a different POV. Saints' players have been fined maybe four times in the past three years for unnecessary hits. Where were all the so called malicious hits?

The New York Giants defense said they knew the 49er's punt returner had suffer concussions in the past. So they figured if they rang his bell a time or two, he would get nervous. It worked. He fumbled twice and lost the game for the 49ers. Where was Goodell then?

These guys average a $100,000 a game in pay. What is another $1500? Beer money for them. Yes, it was an added incentive and a motivator to play hard. But they didn't do anything different than defensive players through out the league do. They hit hard and made a rep as a tough defense. That was their fricking job.

I am not saying it was right. I am saying that Roger "Full of Himself" Goodell was willing to destroy a football team and hurt every Saint fan, just to show how tough he is. Let him put on the pads and get on the field. Then we will see just how tough he is. He didn't care what this will do to the city of New Orleans and the fans. How much will this cost the team and local vendors in lost revenue when the team starts losing because of being hamstrung? How many more "Tracy Porter" free agents will leave, for a better chance a the RING, knowing the Saints are crippled.

He didn't punish only Sean and Greg. He punished me and every other Saints, fan in the country.

I highly recommend Al Stump's biography of Cobb. Not giving away much here, because it was right in the intro section; Stump makes two assertions at the outset upon which he goes on to detail through the course of the book: 1) Cobb was demonstrably the greatest baseball player who ever lived. 2) He was psychotic.

I generally don't like goonism in any sport, but I agree that in a a full-contact sport like football it can be difficult (or even arbitrary) as to where to draw the line. I know a lot of defensive players already feel the rules have been altered to favor the offense, mollycoddle the QB, and ensure the high-scoring games the marketing people believe the fans like. Jim Brown writes about dirty play in his autobiography, and says in the days before the elaborate faceguards, opposing players regularly went for eye gouges during the course of games. One player he says was never dirty is Rosie Grier.

Thanx..I would not dispute that....the BOX,or ENVELOPE, of so called normalcy is big...many operate in its boundaries....Differences between Genius and Madness,,great Leadership and Egotistical Manic are not really understandable...one Mans Hero is an others Criminal! This is true in Aviation also1...in retrospect would we consider some pioneer pilots Normal??...many thought they were NUTS....Both may have been correct
Great artists who depict Goodness, religion may be Scoundrels . We are many things at different times I think...timing and Actions are the Criteria we accept or Reject!...some call our Currant athletic THUGS...and yet these so called THUGS have huge admiring followings...I think in the end what ever you find comfortable with,in that box may be OK!..for You!..and not for others!...

Reminds me of ancient Rome..Gladiators,and Racing Chariot Drivers, and Actors! were considered scum,Thugs,undesirables...at the same time they enjoyed huge fan followings,fame,wealth,...some things never change!
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!....cheers my friend!!..Vin!!
