Annie Penrose, who has died aged 100, gave her childhood nickname – "Little Spitfire" – to the world's most celebrated fighter aircraft.

But was she herself named after the earlier Vickers aircraft called Spitfire?

The term 'spitfire' for a feisty woman was in use long before aircraft were invented.

If I'm not mistaken,.............Scarlett O'Hara was referred to as a spitfire from the Margaret Mitchell novel "Gone with the Wind."
