Wife and I discussed this ... seems a bit too rich to me, she says too golden.

Google shows this orange color that looks more right on my monitor. Your target color may be different.

jankees, I have not seen the real McCoy so I do not know the target you shoot for.

I think in sun, with the specularity shining, it looks right. In the shade, just a bit rich, but that may be just like the real aircraft, I do not know.
Anyway, I would take Huub's perspective over mine as he seems familiar with the aircraft. Great work

Difficult job this....

Color being a wavelength of light being reflected off a surface, here you're trying to match a shade that will change depending upon the light it's being exposed to, and on a computer monitor which operates completely different.

Milton's point is well made, it will also vary from monitor to monitor, card to card.....

Hard stuff.

One of premier repainters is colourblind? Surely you're joking, right?

The colour looks a tad too fresh, as if it has never seen sunlight. Often a simple toning down of the saturation does wonders.
Just my humble opinion.

Jankees, better check the Federal Standard Color codes online, with their Hex codes. That will give you the correct color (copy paste in the color picker). If you know the original color that has been used on the Goose.

Here they mention 226H(FSD) orange was used for "Ambulances" , coming closer to Federal Standard 593 code : FS22243.
And that color can be found here : http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=22243

Unfortunately no "Hex code" to get the correct color within PhotoShop.

I don't think those are HEX color codes? Hex color codes are six characters and start with a #. For instance, #0000ff is blue. These can be translated into standard RGB colors. First two characters in the Hex code are Red, next two Green, and final two Blue.

It might be possible to find or write a color picker app that will allow you to choose the color and give you the HEX or RGB value. However, as other have said, unless you have a calibrated monitor, who knows?

According to the Swedish website mentioned, the orange used is close to FS22243 (Federal Standard 593C color standards).

I hardcopied the colorserver page and pasted it into Gimp. The hex code is d45302 according to Gimp. RGB is 212-83-2.
Is this method valid or did I overlook something?

Depending on how your monitor is calibrated.........
Though on your rig the color is seen as you think it should be, but might be way off on someone else his/her monitor. Hence my use of colors (like FS593) with the appropriate HEX coding as listed.

If you have a browser open with a jpg and you press "print screen" doesn't it use the raw jpg in your browser cache? It seems so to me.
I have looked at the web source code and saw that they were using http://www.colorserver.net/samples/32243.jpg to fill the clear.gif on that page. If you download this jpg with its raw colour information you still get RGB 212-83-2 (Hex d4-53-02).
