View Full Version : FsX native freeware aircraft list

October 2nd, 2011, 03:20
About a month ago a thread started by Casey Jones asked the question "Why are there so few Native Freeware Airplanes For FSX?"
So as the stickied section is not so busy just now I thought it would be good to resurrect the bones of the thread; mainly the hour or so spent by Ferry_vO researching his FsX aircraft data base and also additions made in other posts by authors. Thanks to all of them and all these aircraft have been added to the following list. If the thread is of sufficient interest we will sticky it. If you know of others please feel free to add them. Check Meijer Ad (https://www.ladysavings.com/publix-weekly-ad/?meijer/) and Walgreens Ad (https://www.ladysavings.com/publix-weekly-ad/?walgreens/). If you don't know where to download a given aircraft just ask and I'm sure the answer will come.
Please restrict additions to the list to native only. Port-overs have their place but this thread is about native:

Google spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajp_sOJLki7mdEJiNWhQbmU2czVZUzU4YWgzYm1oV Xc

TIP
If you click on 'View' on the top menu and then select 'List' each column will then have a search box above Row 1. This enables you to search by column to refine your results.

For example, if you wanted to find all available de Havilland aircraft then click in the search box in the 'Manufacturer' column and select 'de Havilland' as your choice and it will display only de Havilland aircraft. Select 'All' in the 'Manufacturer' column to reset the lists or alternatively hit the 'Back' button on your browser.

Likewise selecting 'Dave Garwood' in the 'Author/Creator' column will return all Dave's fine pieces of work.

May I suggest to add Michal Puto's SZD Pirat, please ? I know, it is a sailplane, but since we have only 2-3 done in the fsx standards ...

Edit: Oh, and Mike and me also converted the RWD-14 to be a fully native FSX model :)

Didn't someone create an Excel spreadsheet with FSX native aircraft? Something like that would be ideal as the info can be modified easily and kept as an attachment in the original post.

Btw... the Socata Rallye 100 ST from http://www.d-riv.fr/fs/avions/Rallye100ST/ is FSX native (and a pilot figure is planned for the future according to the dev)

Some designers publish their model without a VC or with a generic looking VC. Good idea! Less pressure for the developper! Less delays! So with a little tweaking you can add the VC of your choice. Some examples:

ISDT Beechcraft King Air B200 (add Default FSX King Air 350 VC):

49366

Dornier 328 by FSX by Björn Kesten [edit: 100% original, not related to the PAD version]
(my advice: swap VC with default FSX Bombardier CRJ-700):

49371 49372

Open Sky has converted to native FSX some of their Boeing 737, 777 and 747 models. With default FSX 737 and 747 VC you have wonderful aircrafts (the 777 is still lacking a nice realistic freeware Boeing VC... the 737 VC works but a 777 has a huge cockpit):
- Many complete packages available at FlightSim, Simviation, Avsim...

49370 49373

Project Airbus A318 A319 A320 A321 A380. Works very well with default A321 VC (2 engines) or Tom Ruth A340 VC (4 engines).
- Many complete packages available at FlightSim, Simviation, Avsim...

49369

Already mentionned but worth repeating: Kawasaki T-4 by Team FS KBT (change VC with Tim Conrad's Mitsubishi T-2, and add SimKid RCAF repaint for outstanding results):
- Kawasaki T-4: kawasaki_t-4_fsx_exterior.zip at Simviation
- Mitsubishi T-2: t-2pack.zip at Simviation
- RCAF repaint by Matt Wynn: http://dropzone-designs.clanteam.com/Downloads/NFTC_T-4.zip

Premier Aircraft Designs doesn't make native FSX aircraft, only compatible models that will work. Their DO328 was not converted by Bjoern, he took the time and made his own model:ernae:

And one thing that bothers me is that some folks (not here) insist of labeling my work as Hovercontrol's work. Although the Bell 210 and Bell 212 I released years was based on Jordan Moore's Bell 412, they had no part in the development of the final models....same goes for the Enstrom, Bell 206, Bell 222 and any future helicopters Eagle Rotorcraft Simulations have planned.

I've checked and there is indeed an interior model (VC.MDL) and an exterior model (Il-86.MDL) in the "model.cfg" file from the Kirill Konovalov's Ilyushin 86, a sure sign of a native FSX aircraft. But you're right, the Il-96 is a port over.

Minor update to the list: Open Sky "Posky" Bombardier CRJ 700. They have a native FSX conversion of their CRJ 700 line, and you can attach the default FSX CRJ 700 virtual cockipt (eyepoint=-1,-1.25,4.15). Why bother? The Posky external model by Hiroshi Igami is way better! Same with textures and repaints... Too bad the 200 and 900 didn't get the FSX treatment...

October 4th, 2011, 23:23
Beware: The FDE for the POSKY CRJ is awful. I've tinkered with it in the last few days and the handling and performance is peculiar at best. JATO-like takeoffs, but if you tone down on the engines, you'll hit a wall at Mach 0.7.

The one from FSX's default model is much better, so use that as a base for a merge.

Euuhhh.. Sorry for asking the obvious ...
But why a thread on "native FSX freeware aircraft" instead of just "FSX freeware aircraft" ???

I'm sure you know there are many "FS9-converted freeware aircraft" as well.
Even stronger (I know I'm stepping on thin ice here): many simmers aren't able to distinguish a "native" from a FS9-converted" aircraft. Simply because of their settings in FSX.
And I'm not even talking about a lot of FS9-converted addon's that are better then comparable native-FSX addon's....

Just trying to put things into perspective ....

Cheers, Rob

I think having a FSX native freeware aircraft list is a great idea. Even if I wasn't able to distinguish a "native" from a FS9-converted aircraft, my computer sure can and to show it's absolute disdain for FS9 aircraft it gives me totally abysmal frame rates.

This I believe is why most of us that differentiate the types of freeware do it.

Rob, starting a new thread titled "Freeware FS9 aircraft converted for FSX" shouldn't be too difficult if you want to start one up. It's not one or the other, plenty of room in the forum for both. Post up a list of ones you know and others can add to it and maybe comment on the performance. Such a list may convince me to try a few more.

I think such a list could prove quite usefull but I personally would rather a seperate thread than combining the two topics. There is my $.02.

There is much confusion regarding optimised Fs9 models and models converted so they are FsX native. A port-over, where textures etc have been altered to allow them to function in FsX is not the same as a converted model where in the model file there are 2 files called ".mdl" one for the exterior and one actually called "interior.mdl". In the latter case there should be little difficulty in running it along side models that were only ever created for FsX. The above list does contain some models that have been converted to FsX native and so run much more smoothly than a simple port-over.

2Low
October 10th, 2011, 00:08
If it has the 2 .mdl files it is native is my understanding, if not it is a FS9 craft converted (should have said ported) to use in FSX. One list for FS9 made FSX native, one for FS9 port overs?

I personally mostly stick to native but do have a few gems ported from FS9. I think a ported list could be usefull, especially if people comment on the ports (performance/anomollies/issues). This could help people like myself that never owned FS9 find some more "gems".

With the amount of freeware and payware native craft I believe such a list's usefullness will decrease with time but for now the more unusual and less common craft (no native version) could still be popular.

This list would be huge and quite an undertaking to keep up I think.

Not necessarily..many FSX native aircraft, both freeware and payware, have been released without a VC model and yet are "Native". For those that run DX10 mode generally only FSX native aircraft can be used without graphics issues (yes I know that some portovers might display okay ,but they are few and far between).

I am sure this has been explained before but for those who don't know yet: There is a simple test anyone can do to verify if an MDL file is native FSX:

Open the MDL file with a text editor like Windows Notepad, then look at the 1st line and you will see one of these words between a bunch of unreadable characters:

MDL8MDLH This means the MDL is FS2004 (portover)

MDLXMDLH This means native FSX

That's not necessarily true. To know for sure you need to look at the model.cfg file. For a true FSX model you should see something like this...

[models]
normal=thorp_exterior
interior=thorp_interior

It is also possible that the author used one model for both the exterior and interior, in which you could see this...

[models]
normal=thorp_exterior
interior=thorp_exterior

It is possible to have a true FSX plane that uses one model for both. I do that a lot as a project evolves. ;)

Thank you for continuing my FSX education guys. I at one time new about the MDL8MDLH vs MDLXMDLH fact but my memory is not quite as good as I'd like it to be.

Let's see if I have this bit right. If you run a FS9 model through the FSX SDK's compiler you get the MDLXMDLH mdl?

One thing I used to check as well was for bmp vs dds files in the texture folders. Bitmaps did not perform as well on my system. Do any native planes use bmp for textures?

That is correct, but in this case the "model" has to be the source file from the 3d design program, NOT the one from FS. That's where the fun starts as if you do manage to get the source file there is a fair amount of work that needs to be done on it prior to sending it through the compiler in order to make it work.

With a FSX native aircraft, you get correct 100% propeller texture, animation, transparency, and shadow. This is quite problematic with FS9 portovers... always something wrong... With this MH-53, the main rotor is very very well designed.

EDIT - This appears to indeed be a pirated version of a payware product. Sim-V has been notified of the issue. N2056

I agree.
And I should have known better to get OT this way :)

But the point I was trying to make, is that for a lot of simmers these days, the criterium for downloading/installing a freeware aircraft in FSX appears to be that it should be FSX-native; and that's what I don't understand, since there are still excellent non-native-FSX aircraft released.
But I'm getting OT again ...:) Sorry.

No big deal because it's definitely a freeware project, but it's nonetheless a surprise... Looks like this Virtavia MH-53 was hacked too? According to Google/Firefox, Virtavia website is corrupted, and Simviation website was down for 3 days...

It is possible to have a true FSX plane that uses one model for both. I do that a lot as a project evolves.

This is the case for this aircraft...

SimV is usually pretty good at catching bad things like this, but of course nothings perfect and this one slipped through the cracks. And on top of that the main site went down, so the priority was to get the site back up. Once that was done and people started posting screenshots of the MH-53, a discussion came about on one of the posts that something seemed fishy. Several members started doing some investigating and came to the same conclusion that this was pirated, as I myself found it on several of the trusted sites for sale. The file has been removed from the site.

Yes, it is difficult. I've done it 3 times and said "Never Again". I use FSDSv3.51 as my design tool so my comments only apply to that situation. You have to redo all the animations, get rid of key frames etc. Redoing all the .dds textures is not so bad but can lead to jaggies etc. Frankly, I find it easier to convert from FS9 source code to FSX rather than the other way around. Others may have had different experiences.

Best, Paul

One plane was converted by me to basic FSX standards in six hours.

BUT: It had a low part count and it didn't include any improvements which I included afterwards.
Still, FS9 -> basic FSX = six hours.

I obviously got the question backwards; I thought he was asking if it was difficult to convert from FSX back to FS9. I do find that difficult; it took me over a week to back convert my Howard DGA. As Bjoern suggests, from FS9 to FSX is not all that bad.

The vast majority of the list came from Ferry's post a few weeks ago and this was the format he chose. If someone were to offer to convert the list to a spreadsheet then additional details could be added. I think all the staff and admin have enough on their plate without expecting any of them to do the work.

A spreadsheet version would be great but would take some time. Also there would be problems for those without MS Office or Open Office. The forum search button could be used to find Authors or Aircraft.
I've just started to compile an online 'Google Spreadsheet' here...

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajp_sOJLki7mdEJiNWhQbmU2czVZUzU4YWgzYm1oV Xc

.. based on the info in this thread. It's going to take a while to complete but at least it will be available for all to view (just need a browser), will have 'sort-able' columns (by creator/author, aircraft make/model/type etc.) and can be downloaded if required.

It is currently restricted to just my access as far as data input is concerned but once the 'meat' is in there it could be made 'open access' so that anyone could update it much like a 'Wiki' page.

If anyone would like to lend a hand I could do with some assistance to be honest especially hunting down all the links to the downloads. Drop me a PM if you can assist.

EDIT:

I've just completed the initial list in the first post and will now check all the other posts to see if any have been missed.

So far I've made 241 entries and if anybody now says "FSX sucks 'cus there's no freeware available for it" I'll hit them upside the head with a 'clue by four'! :isadizzy::violent:

NOTE:

After going to the above link if you click on 'View' at the top and then select 'List' from the drop-down menu you can sort the spreadsheet like a database based on the column headings so you can easily find aircraft you are interested in.

Unfortunately a number of Jen's aircraft added to the list are port-overs; very good port-overs to be sure. I don't think he made any true FsX models until 2010/11.

Only the Viscount has an interior mdl and it's been made with the FSX SDK, the mdl is an MDLXMDLH. Britannia is an FS9 port, as is the Solent, Viking, DC-6 and I presume the Hermes too (as I don't have it installed)

When there's an FSX version I believe it's an FS9 version tweaked to work in FSX.

Your list is missing the released beta of the FS-KBT Mitsubishi F-2A.

Also, under the aircraft by Piglet, the manufacturer for the A-12A should be General Dynamics/McDonnell Douglas (GD/MD). GD was the prime for that program.

New addition (payware released as freeware): AlphaSim EFA Typhoon package from 2006. For the first time, an FSX portover version is now an option. The FS9 HUD and radar were not compatible with FSX, but an all-new FSX flight model has been added. The original HUD is still mapped in, so users can add a suitable display of their choosing by amending the panel.cfg. The original FS9 sounds are included in both versions. The Typhoon is available now, just head over to the Freeware pages : Virtavia Freeware Site (http://www.easyfly.co.nz/Freeware/index.php)

IMHO still the best Tiffy model done to date!

Sky Spirit (ex Posky) 767-300 and 767-400 were recently converted to FSX native by Hiroshi Igami:
http://ssp.cyber-ninja.jp/SSP2010Update.html

These are only model updates (v5). You'll need the old FS9 version (v4) to build the upgrade:
http://www.projectopensky.com/index.php?app=downloads&showcat=18

The old FS9 repaints are not compatible. Here are some that works:
http://www.flightinfo.jp/kaitou/posky/ssp767v5/

You will need to merge this exterior FSX model with the VC of your choice. Default 737 is the most obvious choice. A better alternative is the Justflight 757 Freemium (free).

It's worth the hassle!

After the 767-300 series, Hiroshi Igami is converting to native FSX the SkySprit/OpenSky 767-200 V5. It's here:
http://ssp.cyber-ninja.jp/

I'm trying to check if old V4 repaints are compatible... Hiroshi made two new repaints so far: All Nippon Airways and Japan Self Defence Force E-767.
http://www.flightinfo.jp/kaitou/posky/

Works fine with the JustFlight Freemium 757 VC (eyepoint = 63.5, -1.8, 7.6).

But it's not easy to assemble a complete aircraft with correct model, texture, panel, etc... I bet complete packages will appear soon at Avsim or Simviation.

Thanks for the heads-up on the availability of the FSX 767 model, it's a beaut. However I'm having problems with the JustFlight 757 VC merge. The VC is fine, but I'm getting black squares around the exterior lights and around the lower nose area. I've installed the effects files and copied the appropriate sections to the panel.cfg when doing a 3rd party panel merge. Also have the 'Pky_util' and 'Posky763' folders in the panel folder. I'm baffled.

Update: I found some additional textures in another paint and all seems well now. Mods, you can delete this post if you like.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'filters' but if you want an easy way to search for a specific aircraft or aircraft by a specific developer then a method is outlined in the very first post of this thread. I will post it again here:
