UncleTgt,

Well, I laid out the initial flight plan for the first Kondor mission, where you'll reconnoitre the convoy off Portugal. Given the fact that the convoy passed 'round the Cape of St. Vincent on 15 December, and my knowledge about Allied GIB - U.K. supply routes, I place the convoy about here on the map by the evening of the 16th as it swings around toward the Western Approaches.

I'll do two more Kondor missions for this, one where the Kondors are intercepted by Audacity's Martlets but escape because both fighters have their guns jam, and another mission to simulate the U-boat sinking of the Audacity, where you attack her directly in a Kondor.

As far as the ships, I may cut down the size to sixteen-ish to save my sanity on timing all of them precisely. Then for the Allies, I may "flip" one of the Kondor missions and pick from two of the Martlet intercepts.

However, I won't use any special ships, though. This will be a "quick and dirty" affair, using the tools from the other Kondor missions...

Rami,

You're way too cool ...:salute:

For those that are puzzled, HMS Audacity was the world's first Escort Carrier. In it's short career, it proved the concept of the "jeep" carrier & paved the way for air cover for the vital atlantic convoys.

Her last voyage was in a Gibraltar - UK convoy, HG-76, & her fighters scored several "Kondor" kills before her sinking (by U-boat).

The escort Commander was Captain FJ Walker (see my avatar), a quiet unassuming hero of WW2...

Baldy did Audacity, I did a Wildcat skin... Rami's doing the rest as part of the Kondor's campaign...

The horrible reality is that DEC 41 there were no cruiser in the escort, just merchies, corvettes & destroyers (old ones at that...). All the way up from the med to the UK...

UncleTgt,

Here is the convoy layout...the count is seventeen merchants, two fuel tankers, seven Corvettes, three destroyers, (two of which, HMS Exmoor and HMS Blankney, turned back for Gibraltar following the Kondor reconnoitre on 16 December) two frigates, and one CAMship. Authentic ship names have been used as well!

To create the other two German missions, I can move the convoy without having to do it over, and re-time it, it will be much easier that way, then re-shape the premise. I think I'll swap the two destroyers for merchants, and use two additional names from the ship list.

UncleTgt,

Here are the mission descriptions for the two that are completed...

"title_string"=Kondor - Reconnotire HG 76
"summary_string"=Achtung! Our spotters in Spain and U-boats have spotted a large Allied convoy departing Gibraltar, heading back toward England. U-boats are moving in for the kill, but are in need of reconnaissance. Your task is to overfly the convoy and radio these U-boats on the types of ships in the convoy, along with whether or not there are any surprises, such as heavy escort, CAMships, or aircraft carriers.
"objective_string"=The convoy HG 76 departed Gibraltar for England on December 14, 1941. While the German U-boats eagerly awaited her passage, Captain F.J. Walker utilized aggressive tactics that would result in the destruction of four U-boats & two of the Fw-200 Kondors, although the losses suffered by convoy HG 76 were also high, including the escort carrier HMS Audacity.
"intelligence_string"=You'll need to fly within two miles of these ships at a height of 3,000 metres in order to properly reconnoitre them. Your co-pilot will notify you of his count once this is done. (Use unlimited fuel if you warp on flights this long.)

"title_string"=Kondor - A lucky escape
"summary_string"=Alarm! Thus far, our U-boats have had substantial difficulty raiding this convoy, the enemy kaptain has employed aggressive movements to counter the tactics of our U-boats! Your task is to reconnoitre HG 76 once again. Use caution around the convoy, your last sweep identified a small aircraft carrier within the convoy itself!

Rami, you mission building speed is simply breathtaking:ernae::applause::isadizzy:

A bit more background - the German's ended up losing 4 x Fw200C against this convoy - recon losses they could ill-afford & a nasty surprise for the Luftwaffe crews.

The Martlets were also useful in driving U-boats underwater & regularly flew A/sub patrols around the convoy environs.

Good morning,

To comply with UncleTgt's wish for a Kondor attack on the HMS Audacity, I tried running the mission several times at low level, and it just doesn't work. I can't stay in the air, I get ripped to shreds.

Instead, I'm going to have you bomb from an altitude of 3,500 to 4,000 meters. This will place you safely above much of the flak, but the Fw-200 Kondor lacks a bomb sight. To rectify this, I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to modify the Kondor panel to utilize the bomb sight found in K. Malinowski's Junkers Ju-88 series, which would fit the bill quite nicely.

That way, I can release the campaign this weekend!

Rami

UncleTgt,

Unfortunately, there is no way to simulate them attacking the U-boats and forcing them to dive, it would be a "destroy only" mission, and I need to move back to finishing the Fleet Air Arm before school starts and my free time drops off a cliff.

Here is the final Kondor mission description...

"title_string"=Kondor - Sink the HMS Audacity!
"summary_string"=Achtung! Your Kondor crew has been asked to get revenge on the HMS Audacity for downing several of our Kondors in the last few days! You're under direct orders not to go "trophy hunting" over the convoy and attack other ships, you'll not be given credit if you do. Further, you must not drop below an altitude of 3,500 meters, because this will put you at risk for intercept and flak bursts, we can't afford to lose more Kondors!
"objective_string"=In reality, the loss of escort carrier Audacity was due to a mistake made by some of the escort ships in the convoy, which illuminated the silhouette of HMS Audacity to U-boats which had been trailing HG 76, looking for a moment to attack after being thwarted time and again by the aggressive tactics of F.J. Walker. U-753 used the opportunity given to him by this error, and the HMS Audacity sank very quickly after taking four torpedoes.
"intelligence_string"=Previous reconnoitres indicate the HMS Audacity is on the seaward side of the convoy, so you will be attacking HMS Audacity from the west, placing her in the first column which you see. Use caution over the convoy, the Audacity has Martlet fighters that are expertly flown! (Use unlimited fuel if you warp on flights this long.)

I can have this mission done in about 10 minutes, I already have most of the dynamic elements in place from previous missions, though I will always put in a "twist."

Then, I'll do one Martlet intercept mission and prep the twenty-mission campaign, with three Allied missions (P-38 intercept, Martlet intercept, CAMship intercept) for release.

The original Groundcrew campaign was thirteen missions. I used three of the Kondor and Dornier solo missions, and created four of my own.

The Condor was extremely vulnerable to both anti-aircraft fire and aerial attack. By 1943 low level attack in conditions of clear visibility was expressly forbidden, a minimum attacking altitude of 9000 feet being prescribed.

Just copy the Ju88_bombsight.bmp into the Panel folder.

I know you want to release this campaign as soon as possible, but have you looked at converting the CFS 1 missions "Liberty Convoy" by Terry Baldwin. They are from the RAF perspective and feature Condors, Beaufighters and Walruses.

Kdriver,

First off, thank you very much!

Second, I still have that CFS1 mission conversion guide attached here at SOH. Why don't you have a look at it and see if you can't begin to convert some of the missions to CFS2, then go from there?

Kdriver or others,

I modified the panel, moving the bomb sight bitmap as directed, but mine will not show up. Is there any reason why?

Hi Rami,

Are you in "window mode"? The bombsight by P. Brenage only works in full screen.

Regards,

B24Guy,

Yes, I tried it in windowed and regular mode, same result. Also, I won't look down, it displays in forward view.

Sorry Rami, I shouldn't attempt these things when I come home from the pub on a Friday night.

The switch which activates the bombsight is on the throttle panel on the Ju88. I think this switch - the concorde!GPS-Display-Toggle has to be added to instrument panel of the Fw200.

Also the Ju88 panel has this section:

VIEW_DOWN_WINDOWS=GPS_PANEL
VIEW_DOWN_ZOOM=1.0
VIEW_DOWN_EYE=0.3, -0.2, 1.0
VIEW_DOWN_DIR=55.0, 0.0, 0.0

This probably has to be added as well. I'll try to fix it and get back to you.

I had a go at converting Terry Baldwin's first mission. I made a very basic airfield at St Eval. A lot more could be done to improve the mission. Terry's address at the time: terry@b953.freeserve.co.uk

I got the Ju88 bombsight to work in the Condor. Only one problem - the Condor has a solid nose so you are looking at the floor of the aircraft. :confused:

You can drop the view point for the bomb sight to below the fuselage in the cfg file that controls the sight.

If memory serves me, you can drop your view point down in the indicated line below:

view_forward_WINDOWS=%window_title_00%
VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=3.3,0.0, 0.0
VIEW_FORWARD_ZOOM=0.3
VIEW_RIGHT_ZOOM=0.2
VIEW_LEFT_ZOOM=0.2
VIEW_REAR_ZOOM=0.2
VIEW_FORWARD_UP_ZOOM=0.24

VIEW_UP_WINDOWS=GPS_PANEL
VIEW_UP_ZOOM=0.75
VIEW_UP_EYE=1.3, 0.0, 0.0
VIEW_UP_DIR=40.5, 0.0, 0.0

Thanks Jagdflieger - I'll give it a try.

Nearly there - some of the console on the starboard side is showing.

Kdriver,

Do you have an update on that panel?

kdriver
August 31st, 2011, 00:56
No unfortunately Rami - see PM.

Perhaps a wiser person can fix it - Oberst Jagdflieger? :salute:

Kdriver,

What you have should be fine, thanks! :salute:

Good afternoon,

Okay folks, the Kondors! campaign is now uploaded. I hope you enjoy it, but I understand that Kondors are not the most exciting birds in the world to fly. Fortunately, there are missions that involve a Hurricat, a P-38 Lightning, and Grumman Martlets.

So many missions and modified missions to sort through - you guys are just too clever by half.....
Thank you all.
