View Full Version : Q. for those who fly my planes...

Piglet
August 10th, 2011, 19:56
Keep forgetting to ask,
Do my latest planes have visible reflections off the gauges in the VC? I ask cuz I noticed none of my planes in FSX have those reflections. And I was wondering if other users can still see the reflections. I think (maybe) the newest Nividia drivers?
Some unknown FSX setting? Or BAD PIG?
If others can see the reflections, then I can rule out not making the tex's correctly, and look elsewhere for a fix.
Thanks all,
Tim

Tim, I'm running an NVidia 9600GT w/ver 275.33 driver. . . .Win7/64bit. . . .4gigRAM. I see the reflections:

I just tried it at my end and I have the same Nvidia drivers as Falcon but a GTX460 GPU and I am not seeing reflections on the gauge glass.

I tested with 'light bloom' on/off and 'aircraft casts shadows on itself' on/off and saw no difference.

If Falcon is seeing it and I am not then I assume we have some settings different somewhere.

Larry,
Just for reference, here are the settings for my FSX. . . .also, I don't use any additional internal or external programs that would affect FSX:

Ummm,
I'm running a GTX 460 also, with the 270.61 drivers. All my FSX settings are similar to 409's. Maybe somethin' in that Nividia control panel thingy?
P.S. I am running REX2.0.

This is odd! I just matched Falcon's settings and still have no gauge reflections.

Like Tim I am also running Rex 2.0 with Overdrive but that should have no effect on the gauge glass.

I am running Nvidia Inspector with FSX settings and I am now wondering if it's a setting in there that's robbing me of reflections.

I'm also running a GTX 460 and seeing no reflections on the gauge glass. The driver I am running is from 7-9-2010....the one that came on the disc with the vid card.....8.17.12.5896. Really should update the driver at some point....everything runs great so I haven't seen a need to update it.

I am running SP2, pretty much bone stock except for a handful of add-on planes and Pablo Diaz's HDE Clouds and Sky.

OBIO

Out of curiosity, I took a look at other planes in my install (GAS Lockheed L-12, Lionheart Creations Skylark) that I am sure have reflective gauge glass....no reflections on my system...at least not on the gauges. Interior canopy/windscreen glass has reflections, exterior has reflections...but none on the gauge glass.

I'm running a GTX460 280.26 driver, FSX Acceleration, REX 2.0 Overdrive and have no gauge reflections.

Oddball of the thread with an ATI HD 4650. I get some reflection not as noticeable as Falcon's, not so much as to be able to see behind you or comb your hair but enough to look like glass. Most apparent on the radio faces as seen in the screen shot.45682

good news, the reflection texture shows up and moves around .. bad news ... i cant see through it!

is the texture set to transparent in the material settings? might be worth a check, allthough why others can see through it and i cant i have no idea. Win XP, 9800GT 275.33 drivers, FSX settings pretty much the same as falcons.

I don't see any reflections. The GPU is ATI HD 5850. FSX: Acceleration SP2.

I've been trying to think of anything that might cause reflections to show on my setup that others might not have, but looking at what you mention Larry. . . .
I also run REX 2.0 (no overdrive)
I also use NVidia Inspector (using Nick's setup)
I have both GEX and UTX as well as Orbyx FTX Central
I don't run any FPS Limiter software or the addon "Bloom" program that allowed Nightvis capabilities.

I just can't think of anything else that would be affecting my FSX setup any differently than any others.

I do have the reflections !! (just checked with the A-1J)
And that with 9800GT card, latest vid driver, and Nvidia Inspector installed, as well as the nighttime "bloom" effect.
All running on a I7 860 W7.

Hope this will help you guys to sort the issue out.

Cheers,
Hank

I also have a gtx460, but haven't notice if there are reflections on the gauges. I'm running 275.33 drivers with nvidia Inspector. Just a HU, there are a new set of WHQL drivers out 280.26. I've downloaded but haven't installed yet. Off to see if i'm having same problem as some here, will report back with findings.

edit: Just checked and not seeing any reflections on gauges on any a/c i checked. (piglets A-1H, J2M3, SU P-38 and stock Cessna)

I just spent well over an hour doing some serious testing to see if I could narrow down my issues. I started by updating my drivers to the latest Nvidia release (280.26) and then I tested every single FSX aircraft and helicopter in my hangar.

I am seeing gauge glass on a large number of my true FSX aircraft (I didn't test port-overs obviously as they don't have 3D gauges) and several even have moving reflections on the gauge glass. The PT-19 however is still glass free.

I can only conclude that my system is OK after all as I am seeing both gauge glass and moving reflections on certain aircraft which means there must be an issue with the PT-19.

Tim do you know which of your FSX aircraft should have 3D gauge glass so that I can check those again? I only saw static glass on the 200D and moving reflections on the Zlin fuel gauge. I would hate to think that you had put a lot of effort into several aircraft and I am not seeing the benefits. If we can narrow down which work and which don't it may help you to find a solution.

i'm wondering if Mr.Piglet did what the rest of us devs have done so many times before and just forgotten a setting in the textures material slot?
But why then would some people see reflections/glass on the PT-19 and others not, especially when using the same GPU cards. This is an odd issue for sure.

Or a miszpelllt nmae.

Or a wrong texture format?

I actually wanted to poke Bill O. with a reference to that little icon with the blue and white box, but it sadly has nothing to do with the result in FSX. :d

Tim,
Have 'moving' instrument reflections for sure on Grumman AA-5B and Meyers, not others (of yours).
See them in CR-1 Aeronca, Dino's T45C.
So I'm guessing not everyone (including MS default) has tried to do them.
Somtimes it's hard to tell for sure, whether you're lined up the right way with the sun, or if it's just cockpit shows passing over them.
I have a (first generation?) Pentium quad4 @ 2.40 ghz, 3 gig ram, Windows XP service pack 3, lowly NVidia GT430 with 1 gig ram. using NVinspector.
Hope this can help track things down.
The fact that some of yours show them for me and others not may be a change in some texture or modeling difference. Way over my head.
If they are supposed to be in all yours but not, does in no way detract from the enjoyment, am used to not having the moving reflections. Too much iciing on the cake is supposed to be bad for one.

No reflection here and I also checked the J-21, nothing there either.
Could it have something to do with the Shader Model 3 MOD for FSX by Jesus Altuve ? I run that.

This is just a thought, but after reading through the posts, there are quite a few who have reflections in the "rear view" mirror, but none on the gauges. I noticed that when flying straight and level or even in a bank, many times I don't see anything in the gauge faces either. If you look at the images I posted at the beginning of the thread, several of them were at extreme bank angles or inverted. . . .one, while I was sitting on the tarmac, I had to slew in a circle until I got what appears to be the edge of a building or roof overhang, otherwise I wouldn't have seen anything either.

Just wondering if maybe some of you might actually have reflections, but just haven't been in a position where they will show themselves.

Trust me, I flew the PT-19 of extreme angles, even inverted...but then again, that's how I fly....at extreme angles and/or inverted.....which explains why 95% of my flights end in crashes.

Reflection problem seems to be outside of FSX for me.

I downloaded BMW M3 Challenge car game because YouTube video someone made had reflections in mirrors. No mirror reflections when I run it, not with default NVidia settings or playing with NVinspector custom profile settings.

I chose the game to test with because it loads faster than FSX so I could test different settings faster.

(Nvidia GT430 card, 280.26 driver version)
