Pretty poor visibility - thought I was probably coming down in the wrong valley then spotted the airflied off to my left. Standard left downwind join then and dropped it neatly over the ridge with a curved approach on final!

I've done that a number of times in past events. Glad you had a lighted runway.

Mick;
Wait till you jet to "Some Peanut Butter & Jelly" (SPBJ).. I flew a heading straight for the air strip.. I'm straining my eyes, looking for an airport... Just as I crossed over a "ridge", I noticed that the airport was four thousand feet straight down!! Made for a helluva fast approach speed ;-}

Thought that was going to be really easy to find with the runway direct on track and another VOR on an almost square heading. But I just couldn't see it - then a ridge - a runway down in a bowl! dropped over the edge, came in a bit fast and pulled up just on the end!
I'll have to do some performance checks to see if I can get outta here with a decent payload!

Aborting take off.
OK what happened was the aircraft didn't accelerate properly so I closed the throttles and came to a controlled stop on the runway. Subsequent testing suggests the runway may have a slope so will go again from the opposite end.
As there was no damage (I found an engineer in the bar and bribed him with a few beers to check it out for me) presumably there's no maintenance points conceded?

Needed all the runway (and a little more!) at SPJB to get airborne, gear up and pull it up over the ridge. After that nice flight, great visibility in this fantastic Andean region and straightforward navigation initially towards Chimbote to meet the 096 radial from Trujillo which set things up nicely to run right down the valley towards the NDB on the field.

Nice one Mick:salute:. I watched your progress on the tracker. Looks like you might have had a missed approach or did you not spot the field until you were over it?
mickj300
July 21st, 2011, 14:02
There's no navaids on the field so I set a waypoint on 2 VORs from which I hoped I could turn to track direct towards the field. But I was about 5 miles off and saw it to my right so I tried a base leg join but was too close/high/fast so I just did another circuit to get a controlled approach.
Then downstairs to watch Ice Pilots on TV and see how to fly the C46 properly!

So that's me done! brilliant event, great scenery and what better way to navigate than good old fashioned NDB/VOR.
Before I started this I had no idea what the Andes really looked like, high mountains, vast high level plains and some quite large towns up there. Thanks for introducing me to this.
So the trip totals - 316,000lbs of cargo carried - from strange smelling herbal things(!) to smaller heavier boxes (labelled Firearms Government Property) and some old paintings the loading of which were carefully supervised by some rather strange elderly gentlemen with German accents! Who cares, I carried them all.
Fuel used 20,494 lbs, 3,415US Gallons, 2846 Imperial Gallons, 12,922 litres, £25,000 at current British avgas prices
Airborne time 22 hrs 25 mins, 43 seconds
Maintenance points 4, took my attention away from flying and had a rather hard encounter with the scenery - my own stupid fault.
And my final thanks to Ice Pilots and Buffalo Airways for inspiring me to try the venerable old C-46 - what a fantastic machine! Seen here in the late winter afternoon at the final destination, Salta, Argentina.
