UKMIL has an AI Ark Royal IV (R07). I believe it's a club member only file (not sure - haven't gotten around to d/l it yet).

Looks good, though!

Hi Rich,

I'm no expert, having only "signed on" to UKMIL a few weeks ago myself. My understanding is that there is a "basic" membership - free, like you'd see at flightsim.com, avsim.com, britsim, etc.; AND a lifetime "club" membership of 10GBP. When I searched that addon this morning, I too couldn't download it, inasmuch as I only had a "basic" membership.

Some, what they deem more desireable or current files, are "club" only, some more generic or older files are free. For example, that really nice Sea Vixen repaint to which I referred last week was freely downloadable. I'm bummed since that Ark looks grand - but funds are tapped at the moment, and I'll happily make do with what I have.

For what my opinion's worth, I'm not in the least bit offended with that kind of system. I appreciate that running servers and developing addons cost both money and time. I've gotten hours of enjoyment from countless freeware that when I can, I am happy to donate to outfits like SOH and UKMIL. The latter, unfortunately, will have to wait until next month.

UKMIL or others can set me straight if I've misunderstood the club system.

Since the OP specifically inquired about the Harrier, I suggested the R07 because that would be the most accurate for the Harrier, especially the later models that UKMIL is currently modelling. The R09 Ark Royal from Flying Stations was being decommissioned as the FRS1 was coming into the fleet, so it's not all that accurate for flying Harriers. Like flying F-14 Tomcats off the USS Oriskany, if you will ...

In the case of the Flying Stations Victorious, that was basically a full generation earlier still than the R09 Ark ...

That said, the R09 Ark is a magnificent piece of work - itching for the arrival of a particular bird, also in development with Flying Stations, the name of which harkens to a certain nefarious sea-going tradesman ... but I digress ... :running:

But the Ark Royal before the ski jump addition, semi-angled flight deck and all.

The Flying Stations Ark Royal is Ark Royal IV and is in the form she was when paid off, there was no ski jump modification, the first Harrier carrier was I think HMS Hermes that did have a added ski jump but no model available for FSX.

The UKMIL Ark Royal is Ark Royal V a completely different ship.

At fs.com... been around for a while, in FSX scenery, with a pleasant surprise in....

FSX native, with a nice, late Ark Royal (R07) for AI Carriers, working ski jump. Looks a treat steaming with Fearless and some Leanders!

Matt, what are you seeing as a semi angled flight deck, it is a angled flight deck and as far as I know the worlds first unless that goes to another British carrier.

Rich,

It is the first angled deck, just a very mild angle is all. Wasn't nitpicking, just not very pronounced is all. I was a bit suprised after seeing how angled todays carriers are compared to the original.

When you compare the size of Ark with what you have in the US Navy Ark is close to half the size which is why it looks squeezed, it is I think 10 degrees on Ark.

In case of payware you can have the HMS Illustrious (together with the Charles de Gaulle and Bonhomme Richard) in Abacus' "Carrier Strike Force" package. The aircraft are ... Abacus quality ;) , but the ships are gorgeous!

and so is ours, we do not charge for it, we charge to join our club where you get many extra downloads. So legally, the Ark is free.

Club members will also get pre-release download permission for our upcomnig harriers:salute:

Joining UKMIL is well worth the tenna that it cost as there are loads of great downloads, plus nearly all the best RAF repaints for various free and payware aircraft are done by UKMIL so they get my support for that! However I completely forgot about abacus strike fighters but does the CDG work in acceleration? I'm just thinking of reinstalling it for HMS illustrous!

Unfortunately the CDG only works with 3wireX running because Abacus makes his carrier series for FS2004 and FSX (for FSXA there is Sylvain's freeware Clemenceau ;) ).

The Bonnie and Illu do not need 3wireX if used for VTOL operations. Of course the ships have to be set manually into the FSX world as they are only presented in missions. Thankfully there are freeware tools for doing this.

Finally, I have joined the UKMIL club and have downloaded the Ark Royal.
No luck so far, could not install it properly in order to use it with AI carriers...
I am pretty bad with those carriers configurations..
I have installed the Nimtiz and Clemenceau carriers properly but no chance with the Ark royal.
I know UKMIL will not provide any assistance nor support for users trying to use the Ark royal with AI carriers.
Anyways, I am now a proud member of UKMIL! :salute:

Not to detract from UKMIL's excellent Ark Royal, but Simon Swallow's Portsmouth highrise scenery for FSX also includes HMS Ark Royal V (Invincible class) with a carrier track sailing from Portsmouth to Southampton every 40 minutes or so.

If you also look at the Flying stations Forum under "Royal Navy Ships" you will find a topic on the three invincible class carriers that I am working on.

You say unfortunately. Is there any problem running 3wireX, does it effect others things?

I was wondering about that - but is that pack not a "scenery" (ie: static) rather than moving? I assumed so based on it being released for FS9. Not that with VTOL, it would be a big issue. Curious how this looks/works in FSX ....

Well, first there was the problem installing it (on W7 64), where it needs to make an entry into exe.xml but fails at it. I had to use Google to find the right entry to do it manually... it wasn't detailed in the manual nor on Abacus' site.
Also, you have to add manual entries to another xml file for each aircraft you want to use with 3wireX.
I do not know if the running program does in fact interfere with anything other, but since I had bad experiences with other programs and was keen on the two VTOL carriers anyway, I didn't care enough for the CDG to place it permanently into FSX as AI.
My understanding is that Ron Jeffers who designed the ships had to keep the backward compatibility for FS2004 for Abacus.

I wanted carrier groups with each one carrier for trapping and another for Helo/VTOL operations (and proper escort). So far I have three carrier groups steaming north of Australia:
Clemenceau (Sylvain) + Mistral (J P Baril)
Ark Royal (Flying Stations) + Illustrious (Ron)
Nimitz (Javier) + Bonnehome Richard (Ron)

So you see, no CDG and thus no 3WireX necessary.

PS: No bad feelings towards 3WireX, it's a wonderful tool. It's just that FSXA rendered it unnecessary.

PPS: Alberto, if you read this, I'd love to add a Spanish amphibious group to the Torres Strait :engel016:
