View Full Version : Willy's Calamitous Cargo Run

Went over to Marcos to make a deal with this AAF supply officer there. He some wrecked C-46s on hand that he needed to dispose of and I had some "supplies" that he could use. Ended up with enough C-46 pieces to put one together. O' course, since it was an under the table deal, we had to lose any data plates with serial numbers along with any identification markings on the outside. At least I did get a bill of sale for the scrap pieces.

Anyway, we've got it all together and somewhat flyable although Fred hasn't got enough C-46 time to talk about. I also figured Fred could do the flight engineer thing as well as co-pilot. We're hoping to finish tweaking on the engines soon so we can start back down south. (In other words, I've got few more tweaks on Gunter's Real Engine modules to finish up).

Hope to be able to take off for RPMD soonest....

Let's see how this fine aeroplane flies. RPMT to RPMD With Real Engine to keep things honest.

Nice short flight that I flew as light as I could (0 payload and 10% fuel). The big Curtiss flies very well and I managed to keep from blowing up the engines even though I did strain them a bit. All part of the learning curve I guess.

Now off to find a cargo that needs to go in my general direction....

It just dawned on me that there are a couple of Corsairs heading this way and Corsairs use R-2800 engines like the C-46 does. Parts delivery?

Willy
May 11th, 2011, 18:20
Heading out for WAMR on the SOH server. Hope I can keep the engines together.

Willy
May 11th, 2011, 19:12
The engines turned out to not be a problem. I got a blue screen of death about halfway through the flight. I'll try to refly later on.

Willy
May 14th, 2011, 18:06
Let's try this again... off to WAMR

Willy
May 14th, 2011, 20:16
Success! Well, at least my comp didn't croak on me this time.

Actually, it was a nice flight with really good weather and other than overheating the cylinder heads and oil taxiing around after I landed, it went pretty good.

Darned if this C-46 aint slower than a SBD. Even after I swiped... er... "borrowed" a R-2800 off of PRB's Corsair after he landed at RPMD....

Mine's available now, sitting behind the big red hangar at Davao. Not sure how great a condition it's in after I got through with it... :icon_lol:

Pressing on to WASS here shortly. Maybe even WABB if I seem to be making good time.

Willy
May 16th, 2011, 10:41
Made it to WASS just fine, but couldn't post the results due to SOH being down for maintenence last night. Nice flight with the radio/cd player running to drown out Fred's nonsense. I was a bit high on approach so I circled a bit until I was low enough for final.

Making preperations to get underway for WASS to WABB.

Willy
May 16th, 2011, 20:34
Made it on in to WABB although it was a bit foggy there. Strained the engines a bit on take off, but they held together.

Climbing out of WABB headine east to WAJJ. Looks like headwinds for now....

I save the flight at every stop and it was getting late in the afternoon FS SWPAC time when I saved yesterday. Somehow I forgot to reset the time to morning before this takeoff. So here I am, on a fast cruise at 9,000' with sun behind very low on the horizon. Guess I'll see how well the C-46 lands at night.....

Willy
May 17th, 2011, 19:49
Well, the radio compass got me to within sight of the airport lights and it was a good thing that it was pretty much straight in to land so I didn't have to circle around in the dark hills overly much. Did have a near miss with a tree in the landing lights on short final though.

All in all, I'm not in any hurry to repeat the experience as I'm figuring this fool got lucky.....

Cool, night landing in the big Curtiss Beastie.

Willy
May 18th, 2011, 11:10
West of WAJJ at night, there is nothing on the ground. Just blackness.

In keeping with the Real Engine theme, I've decided last night that should I have something unfortunate happen and I crash the C-46, that's where it's staying.

Heading out from WAJJ to AYWK.

Good luck all along the way Willy ... :wavey:

Nice flight, had some Zepplin going on the 8-track and just had a good time.

Until the Duenna flashed up invalid after landing. It's showing another aircraft change error. I'll keep going while awaiting a Race Committee decision.

Took off in beautiful weather that just got progressively worse. Spent the last part of the flight going low and slow down a valley in the fog trying to keep from missing the airport. Just glad I spotted it in time enough to land.

Time to get a bit serious about this... Off to Port Moresby!

Willy
May 22nd, 2011, 19:09
Arrived in Port Moresby. Will stay here for a short layover then proceed to AYGN.

Couldn't resist a FS1954 screenshot when I saw the pair of Stratoliners parked.

Stopping at AYGN for the night before I head back towards the north.

Interesting approach, skimming the hillsides down to meet the runway.

Got another of those not in aircraft errors. I'll keep going unless the committee says otherwise, but I've got an idea what might be causing them. Next leg, I'm going to see if I can cause another. The current theory is that the Duenna might also have a music critic function.

Then after a quick bite for lunch, it was on to AYNZ. Almost was a very short flight as "otto" was trying to kill me right after take off. A jabs with a sharp stick and he decided to behave and fly right.

I eliminated a couple of possibilities on creating those errors. Next step is to change the CD with the Duenna running.

Going to stay at AYNZ for another night. The guy in the brown truck stopped by and left me a box of computer goodies that I'm itching to install.

Willy

Having issues with the computer goodies, but decided to try and knock out a few more legs before this weekend.

Flew to the coast and followed it around to "Bird Nest" (Finschaven/FIN)

On to Cape Glochester across the water from here...

Willy

Shortish flight to Cape Glochester (CPG). Good thing that it's pretty easy to find.

Going to stop here and offload some coffee and donuts before heading out to AYKV after while.

Willy
May 26th, 2011, 18:10
I'm now 99.9% sure I know perzactly what's causing my occasional Duenna error. It's the Radio/CD gauge. Or better said, it's when I go to change CD's in it. My comp goes to read the CD and locks up FS for about 20 seconds or so. This time I had the Duenna pulled up and watched it as I put the new CD in. FS stopped then the Duenna flashed red for a couple of seconds.

Anyway, I should be showing an error now just after the 14 minute mark into my flight.

Willy
May 26th, 2011, 18:56
Landed safely at AYKV. And spot on at approx 14mins into the flight I got an aircraft state error. At least I now know what's causing them..

Heading on to Rabaul (AYTK) from here..

Made it in to Rabaul easy enough. Going to stop here for a few days. We've got a high priority mission coming up over the next few days.

Now that Taco's run has been finished time for me and Fred to get back to the C-46. Took it on down to Buka (AYBK) which has me set up for the final leg to Munda (AGGM). Hopefully, I'll knock it out tonight.

Not a bad flight for an old fat plane! Once I found the aircraft carrier I knew that Munda was getting close.
