I'm using Alphasim's Ju87 D3 for missions in the ETO but am having trouble with thier dive bombing. I have them listed as catagory 3 in the DP file but they approach selected target in a shallow dive, pass it then turn around to hit it with some crashing in the turn. Anyone know how to make them dive from thier original course, drop bombs pull up and continue on that course to the next waypoint?

Category 3 may be for vehicles. It's a number i'm not sure what it was meant for. Set the category to 10 and I'll bet the issue is fixed. Report back after you try it?

Here's what t I know about aircraft type assignments in the dp file.

Notice numbers 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 don't have type assignments that I know about. If anyone has additional info, could you post it please?

PS - If the Stuka in question is an AI plane, you will most likely need to modify the AIR file information at line 1001 with AIREdit. Reducing the first 3 number sets by HALF typically gets planes to respond better.....

That is very helpful. I notice that 3 is listed as dive bombers, but I have not had any luck with it, and always use 10. But your list is a lot more complete in any case. Much appreciated !!

SC is right. Cat 3 is for dive bombers. Found the problem though. Move last waypoint before attack waypoint back to about 6-7 miles then make attack waypoint altitude 2000 ft. They hit the target mercilessly! Thanks for the quick replies to all!

Altitude (and maybe distance from WP to the attack point?) might be the issue in getting the AI to bomb the target. Talon and I talked about this last night. Beginning the attack from close in below 5000 to 6000 feet when coded as category 3 has not worked well for me, but category 10 always has. However above that altitude Talon says the category 3 AI does their job.

Since I've been doing fighter bomber missions, I had been setting attacks up from close in and from lower altitudes. I'll try some category 3 experiments when I start work on the missions for the 354th FG campaign when they enter their ground support role and see if it still give me problems.

My suggestion for fighter-bomber missions is to set category to 4. This way you can set your planes at a lower alt (2000 to 4000 ) and they will attack at a shallow angle and drop all bombs and if you use all weapons they will strafe the target until it is destroyed. The best way for this to work is 2 or 4 plane groups and stagger the groups so they attack at different times. Less chance of them crashing into each other this way.
